    H1N1 vaccine

Are you going to get it or not ???

Here is Canada, ( don't know about the US), 48% say YES... the rest of the population are either on the fence or a definite NO.

Seems to be a whole lot of controversay on the safety, necessity, of this vaccine.  I've just read that Obama has declared a *national emergency*.

I am one that is *on the fence*.  I HATE vaccines, either for my dogs, my kids or myself.

Having said this, I am a Type 2 diabetic, my daugter is a Vet, my DIL is a nurse, so... they are in constant contact with the public... THEN come home to tell me that they LOVE me !  lol

Your thoughts, decisions and reasons ??

    Re: H1N1 vaccine

I'm not sure yet, I think it will depend on cost and availability for me.  I'm not against vaccines at all, I get all the ones my Dr. recommends.  I'm at the top age for the recommended age group (without immune problems), I don't work in a very public sector, and I don't have kids or a baby/pregnancy.  I think I'd rather have DH get it since he is an elementary teacher.  I did not get the seasonal flu shot but mainly b/c I was sick (really bad cold or something) for three weeks, during the time my employer offered it and it seems it is not recommended to get it while you are already sick.  I'm due for an annual Dr. exam soon so I'll just ask her then.

If I were in the high-risk group, I wouldn't hesitate, but I'm not. I doubt I'll get it. DH will be required to get it since he's a first responder. He already catches every bug that goes around, so I'm anxious for him to get it and so is he.

No way. I am very anti vaccines. I wont get the regular flu shot. And if I had kids they wouldn't be getting all the standard protocol shots either (some but not all). All these vaccines still have mercury (thimerosal is mercury) and they put antibiotics and other horrible chemicals in them. I feel its a way for the government in cahoots with the drug companies to mass medicate the public (which is illegal) and make lots of money. I don't give a crap if Chairman Maobama says its a national emergency or not.

Nope, definitely not getting it here. If I were under 12 or over 65, I'd consider it. But I'm young, healthy, and not pregnant, so at this stage I'd rather have the risk of the influenza rather than the risks of the vaccine and its additives. I'm not anti-vaccine, but I do think the world has gotten far too vaccine-happy. The only year I ever had influenza was the year I got the flu shot. Once in 23 years, hard to call it coincidence.

There's more mercury in a fish from Lake Michigan that people eat.

As far as I'm concerned, as long as vaccines work, then there's no such thing as being too vaccine happy!!

That's the problem though, people are making medical decisions and putting themselves and their children at risk (I'm talking in general about vaccines) based on Google?!?!  To me that is just insane.  On every forum I belong to there is a thread with people "deciding" whether or not to get the vaccine.  CALL YOUR DOCTOR or your kids' pediatrician!  If I got a gash in my hand, would I Google how to stitch it up? No, I'd go to a doctor!

Sorry, I'm not trying to single you out.  I'm seeing and hearing this everywhere and it's astounding to me.

    Re: H1N1 vaccine

I am very comfortable with the science behind vaccines and vaccinations.

That said, I am not planning to get the swine flu vaccine. I am not in the highest risk age group, I am not in contact with kids, I am not even in contact with a lot of people (currently unemployed, when not, work-from-home). I wouldn't want it because, with the shortages, I'd feel like I was "taking" it from someone else who would need it more.

    Re: H1N1 vaccine

For me, it's not that vaccines don't work, it's all the other diseases and illnesses that vaccines cause and are linked to that bother me. If they were risk-free, of course I'd jump right in. But no vaccine is risk-free, some are downright dangerous, and personally I don't necessarily want monkey fetuses injected into my system so that I won't get some particular influenza (Note: No, not all vaccines are made from monkey fetuses....but, animal fetuses ARE used in the production of some vaccines used as the vehicle to carry it. Aborted human fetuses have been used as well).

But as I said, I'm not anti-vaccine. I just don't take every vaccine just because someone tells me I should. If I think the benefit outweighs the risk, then I will do it.

Fair enough.  But nothing is risk free.  I'd bed that statistically speaking, just getting in a car carries far greater risk than getting a vaccine (assuming you are not allergic to the ingredients or known to have reactions).  And pretty much everything these days is full of chemicals and weird stuff.

I value personal freedom but I also encourage everyone to think about this from a community health standpoint.  I've seen people say they refuse to get this vaccine just because they don't like being told they have to get it, people that work in hospitals in direct contact with patients or people with little babies at home....

At this point I am not aware that H1N1 vaccine causes anything, so if my Dr. says get it, I'll get it.

H1N1 Vaccine?  Not no, but he!! NO!  Prevention in other ways....naturally.  I am a vaccine minimalist to be sure.  But, thats just me.

    Re: H1N1 vaccine

Not likely, AT ALL. I've never even had a regular flu shot. I'm a little nervous of vaccines, in general, and especially vaccines for a virus that's only newly widely vaccinated against. I like to see things out for a while, before I try them on myself or my pets. My dogs (Emma, especially) are at HIGH risk for the new dog flu, but I'm too nervous to vaccinate them against it.

Nope, and I don't get the 'regular' flu shot either.  I haven't had a flu that I can remember..if I've had it it was when I was young enough to be unable to remember. I rarely even catch a cold. That tells me that my immune system is working fine, so I've no desire to bugger with it
