Hello, trying to pick a dog - Updated, Found my dog!

Hello all,

I've been giving serious thought to getting a dog again, and feel it's a very important decision, on par with having a child. So, I've joined a few forums and would like some advice.

I apologize if this is in the wrong section, if a mod would like me to move it, I'll be happy to repost.

About myself and the living arrangement for my potential new partner.

I'm 30 a year old guy, live alone on 10 fairly secluded acres in Western Washington. It's a mile drive down a private road just to get to a public road, so there shouldn't be too much of a chance of him getting hit by a car.

I own my own business and work at home, so except for maybe one trip a week into town for the day, I'm pretty much around all day long.

I grew up in a semi-farming area, and dogs weren't allowed inside. He'll be played with throughout the day though, with 1 to 3 hours of dedicated training, excercising and playing per day, plus spending probably 2/3s of the day with me, out in my shop with me, etc.

At night he'll have a 40'x80' shop to sleep in, warm bed, and a kennel linked to it with a dog door for his outdoor needs.

Most of the day he'll be able to run around at his leisure, most of the time with me, but he will be loose.

I had a Black Lab for years that I trained, loved dearly, but who had two big problems that I couldn't break him of:

He'd sneak away and roam to the neighbors, and he'd howl when I was away in town. The neighbors were close to shooting him if he ran off again.

I realize that just about any dog will run off if left completely unattended, but I don't want to have to keep a dog in a kennel all day when I'm not constantly 100% focused on keeping him home. I'd like him to be able to play in the yard, but still know to stay at home. I'd like a breed that for the most part will stay at home and doesn't have a natural inclination to jailbreak.

I also realize that every dog is different, even in the same breed, but certain breeds do have more of a reputation for straying and howling than others.

Any recommendations on breeds I should look at? I'd love to get another Lab, but am worried about more problems with running and howling when I'm not home. I'm thinking perhaps a Rottweiler or an English Mastiff? Any other recommendations? I'd appreciate any advice! Thanks!

dogs that are fostered and dogs that are in shelters?

In the near future I will be ready to adopt a new dog. We find that it is important to adopt a dog that is being fostered in a house setting so that it can easily adjust to our apartment setting. I find that this will be easiest to ask quesitons about its temperment and behavior directly from the foster family to get the best idea of what we will be getting into and not get into any trouble once we've adopted.

Is there any way to find if the dogs are being fostered in a house setting? Or if they are more in a shelter type of setting? I know of petfinder and searching by area but is there a way to tell on the site or is there other sites to check? Or would it just be best to go case by case and email the contact of the dog on petfinder and find out that way?

Mom looking for small female housedog in central PA

I am helping my Mom search for a dog because she does not have a computer. SHe had a shitzu who died a long while ago and has always wanted another dog. She is at home all the time and spoils a dog plumb rotten. She needs a small female, already at least partly housebroken. there are no small children, but it would be nice if it was of a nature to get along with other dogs and/or cats. My family has dogs and cats. She does not want a puppy, and I would say nothing with serious expensive health issues. Anyone who knows of one in a rescue or shelter or just someone who may have to give one up like so many are having to in these economic times, please let us know. thanks so much, Julie

Searching for Maremma or Tatra lgd

Ive been doing alot of reading on these 2 breeds and would like to get one (eventually 2) for my sheep. There is plenty of information to read about (found several yahoo groups and such) but not much as finding folks with working pups for sale.

Does anyone know of someone that I may be able to contact to purchase a pup? Id like to find one by spring... sorta cold right now. ;) Im leaning more towards the Maremma than the Tatra, but Ive read good things about the Tatra as well. It seems that the Tatra is more rare than the Maremma.

Hi everyone,

Hubby and I are looking to adopt another dog. Right now we have a 2 year old miniature schnauzer. We're looking for a young or adult small, calm, low-dander dog to add to our home! It needs to be good on the leash & in the car, house trained, and GOOD WITH KIDS. We don't have kids yet, but we don't want it to be an issue in the future when we do start a family. We had been thinking of getting a Bichon Frise, but we can't afford a purebred, and frankly, I'd rather rescue a dog that really needs help.

We are living in a house in Arizona that has a good fenced yard and lots of love! If anyone knows of a dog that would work for us, and is within 100 miles or so of Phoenix, please let me know as soon as possible!

Missing family member - Elderly Male Shih-tzu

My dad's dog Pooh Bear went missing on Monday 11/17/08 after 7:30 p.m. on Worley Mill Circle near Ramhurst, Georgia. I know a lot of animals go missing but this one was special to my dad. He is disabled and this dog was his constant companion. Pooh Bear is old but he is my dad's best friend. My dad has had to stay on his oxygen a lot since he has been gone. Pooh Bear is an elderly male Shih tzu. His undercoat is silver and his overcoat is black. I had recently given him a bit of a hand trim so it would be easier to keep him clean for my dad so he now looks more silver than black. He had on a brown leather collar with his rabies tags. I have tried everything I know of to get the word out that he is missing. I am sure that someone took him from my dad's yard but I have been praying that they will realize that he is old and has health problems and will either give him back or take him to the vet so they will let us know that he is ok. The announcement has been on the tv as well as every radio station with in a 40 mile radius of where we live. I have also listed him as missing with every website I can think of that has to do with missing pets. All of the local shelters and humane societies are on the look out for him as well. It has also been listed in the local papers. I have also recently started a chain letter among my friends asking them to send it on to everyone they know of that lives or works in the area. Does anyone out there have any more ideas of what can be done to get the word out or find a way to get him back? I am worried about both Pooh's health and my dad's health if we don't get him back. Chinese Shar Pei Rescues in New York Area?

A coworker of mine and I were talking about Tyson and Gracie. She mentioned that she was interested in getting another Chinese Shar Pei (she has a 1 year old male now) and I suggested she look into rescue, and she was definitely interested.

My family's 13 year old Scottish Terrier, Cody, recently passed away. My dad has already dropped hints that he would like another (Cody was our second, following Alex). Our breeder does not have any litters available at this time and is unsure when the next will be.

My dad's birthday is March 11. We thought it would be nice to get him a new Scottie puppy for his birthday, or at least have a lead on a litter that is coming.

We live in Wisconsin -- my dad seems to prefer solid black coloring and we've always had males. If you know of anything, please let me know. Thanks!

Its been about a month since Daisy passed away, and I think I'll be ready for a new furbaby to share my life with soon. Just thought I'd get the word out.
I want a dog (male or female, I have no preference) that gets along well with other larger dog (because we have Oscar and Levi), and is friendly towards people. Under 5 years prefered, but I don't mind taking in an older special needs baby. Its okay if they have a bit of an "attitude problem", Daisy came with that and I curbed her of it real quick.

We are seriously thinking about adding to our family. Our cat Tommy went to the rainbow bridge and we want to add another dog. We also want it to be a Lhasa Apso (no mixes this time) and not older then 2 years old. I want to do it right this time so I went on petfinder and found this.

Now before I call the people has anyone heard of a Lhasa with blue eyes before? It was my understanding they were to be brown. I also talked to someone that said that dogs with blue eyes have lots of health problems and may be sterile. The sterile part doen`t bother me as she would be spayed anyway.

Those two are the closest places where I could drive to and one of those is a 10 hour drive one way. Also they are puppies. I would - could do the puppy thing again but a year old really sounds nice to me as Molly is a year and 1/2 now. Hubby want a puppy though. Guess you know who does all the work with having a puppy.

We sadly had to put are 11 year old Black lab to sleep this past spring. We had her since she was 12 wks old. Its not the same without her. So we decided we are ready to open are hearts to another. We would give a good loving home on are small farm. We have a big fenced in yard and large pond for swimming and playing fetch. We would prefer a full blooded pup but papers not important. We would like to find a female pup around 6 wks to 12 wks approx. She will not be used for any breeding will be spayed once old enough to do so. We are in southern Ohio area.

I know my chances are probably slim, but I am going to attempt this part of the forum! Currently, as many of you know, I have a pure Sibe. and I have another sibe coming to me the end of the month XD... As if two sibes, and a pomeranian is not enough to handle... I am currently looking for a Weimaraner breeder around the Pennsylvania area or surrounding states. We are looking for a female. -NONE- of my dogs, The Siberians, The pomeranian, or the future weimaraner are for breeding purposes, I just prefer females with larger dogs. (Our small pom is male though).

Anyways, my luck has just been slim thus far in finding them, they seem to be difficult to come by in this area. We are looking to get it sometime in September. Anyways, thanks!

We got our current rescue dog 3 yrs ago (now 5yrs old, and a medium xbreed), we're looking for a companion for her and ourselves.
Age, breed, size etc aren't important, and although we'd prefer no bigger than collie size we'd consider somethung bigger.
We have no kids or visiting kids, my partner works fulltime, and although i'm currently at home all the time i do plan to eventually work fulltime (this is when dog walkers, and possiblydog creche will come in).
we've trained many dogs before and can promise any future companion lots of nice walks, love and hugs (from our own dog too!!)
