Could we maybe have a sticky thread in the General forum where people can put links if their dog is in a photo contest? Rather than many threads in various subforums... Then people who like to participate in these know exactly where to look and the dogs get the exposure they need.

again...not sure how this will go, but I am here. I am fine, a bit raw still, but not as often as before. But, for that reason I won't be modd'ing, I get prickly, then I get squishy and the most inopportune times it seems, emotional healing still to be done. Kids are moving along nicely with that, this was traumatic for all in my household and even a bit beyond.

First off...well duh not first...that up there was first...but now, let me say how incredibly humbled and touched I am at the outpouring of support in N & S's thread in Rainbow Bridge. I was not alone in this loss, tho it felt like that at times when it was fresher. But I know now, that I am not alone.

I feel, better. The lots behind my home were mowed today, matter of fact, and how cleansing and at peace I feel about that. It truly was...the very least I felt I could do for my girls and my neighborhood really. Susie's remains are home and I choose to think of them BOTH when I see that wee cedar box on my mantle

Losses do not get easier just because there are more of them...but I am healing up...I laugh and joke..and in many ways I am, myself. I am glad to be back here, I think. I am looking forward to seeing the things I have missed...and participating in things from time to time.

Ellie, yes Ellie...many of you FB crowd know, but she is due to whelp, in mere days. While I anticipate it, it also is another possible time for sadness, me being morose, yes. Things happen...I hope I am ready. I hope things go well. I visualize things, going well. But again...here I am, and well...*smile* *wave*

Online Communities = Support vs. Enabling

I feel there is a fine line between online communities offering support to their members vs. enabling bad decisions/choices/behavior.

You see it everywhere -- certain posters rally around the person having the "problem" and viciously attack anyone who might step in to point out anything negative (even though said negative thing may be true or based on things that a poster has written in the past). True "mama bear" syndrome.

Enabling someone to continue their bad behaviors or choices doesn't help them. I find it ridiculous that the "realists" of the community can come under attack or be reported to moderators for pointing out certain truths of a situation. This is especially so when said "realist" isn't even attacking the board member, but perhaps another person in their life causing them stress or pain. From the "realist's" point of view, they are trying to HELP the community member by encouraging them to seek alternatives -- and not just patting the person on the back and saying, "it will be okay," etc.

Life is not all fairies and rainbows.

The defense most commonly made is, "S/He's not always like that, I only write when I'm angry." If that's the case, you need to know that our picture of this person in your life has been painted by you. All we know is what you write. If you don't want people thinking badly about people in your life, perhaps you should not slander their name all over a public bulletin board. Write your negative feelings in a private journal instead.

I am not writing only of events on this board -- I see it in EVERY online community I belong to. It just boggles my mind.

A chat function! I'm on a doberman forum and for the members who are logged in, there is a little box on the main page like a chat room! I think if it's possible, it would be nice to get on here and shoot the breeze with the others.

Hi everyone. It's that time again...SUMMER! Good and bad abound this time of year both in life and on forum. Extreme heat, but perfect beach days...cholorine overdose from the pool, but exciting travels or vacations...etc.

Here at our forum...things can slow down...as people vacation or just find themselves with more to do outdoors. It's also not an uncommon occurence for folks with newfound spare time, to poke a bit at folks in the form of nonsense posts, or pot stirring. Some join JUST for that reason.

Even if the heat gets to you, lol...remember to always keep your cool and use the report feature instead of engaging once you are rather certain someone is up to no good. It's a public forum, it happens.

You can also always PM a Mod/Admin if you have a funny feeling or just need to get something off your chest.

So here it is...the conclusion of the annual "Welcome Summer" post. I hope everyone has a WONDERFUL Summer season full of sun, fun, bbq, new travels, or whatever puts you in that Summer frame of mind! Thanks for reading!

A moderator promptly moved the post to Dog Events and I am not happy with that - or with the fact that the notification didn't tell me to whom to respond.

A Healing Touch Workshop does not belong in the same category as dog shows and agility events. One doesn't even need to bring a dog!

Could we put the thread under Health? That would be OK with me even though the Equine folks won't see that there is a workshop for them, too.

A suggestion to the mods

It might be a good idea to research a term and see if it is used in the appropriate context before making an assumtion, red inking a word out of a post, and possibly giving someone a strike against their account.

The red ink and the use of the word "inflammatory" leaves a lot to the imagination about which word was actually removed.

Regarding the word "evangelical", which was used in a marketing context and not a religious one (even though one member made a point of drawing that inaccurate conclusion) could have been handled better.

When Moving a Thread....

....is there any way that the mods can put some sort of indiction that the thread has been moved so as to redirect users to its current location? this would be a lot less annoying and make things more user friendly, IMHO, then just having threads disappear.

Uploading Photos:
You can upload photos into your dog.com gallery OR link to them in your posts.

To upload to your gallery:

Edit Profile
Upload a Photo
Add/Update

Upload file from your computer by using the Browse Button then SAVE
Then fill in the Subject (required) and the other fields (optional)

Then Save and Continue Writing or Publish

When you hit your Photo button, the new photo should be in your gallery.

To upload into posts:

From a host site:

Copy the "IMG Code" below your picture in photobucket and paste it into your reply window - it's a preformatted link so you don't need to do anything else.

Above the reply window, in the same line as the Bold and Italics symbols, there is a small picture of a tree. Click on that and a window will open. Copy the "Direct Link" below your picture in photobucket and paste it in the space after "Image URL"

Click Insert

To upload from your gallery into posts:

The Content Selector will eventually be working and that's the tool to use.

Click on the Content Selector
After it loads, find your gallery name on the left and click on it.
Click on the picture you want in your post or upload a photo into your gallery from your computer.
Choose the size you wish your photo to appear and click OK

Note: You can resize your photo in one of 2 ways:

1. Before clicking Insert, type the desired dimensions in the "dimensions" section. 450 - 550 pixels generally makes a nice sized photo. But be aware that if you don't keep the same ratio of pixels as the original, the picture may look "stretched".

2. When your image appears in the reply window, it can be resized by clicking on the image and then placing the cursor on one of the corners of the image and dragging it to the desired size. This preserves the original ratio.

SUMMER!

Summer on dog.community/idog is a fun time...but things do sometimes slow down a bit as people do their travelling and just kinda enjoy the outside things.

BUT we also at times get "summer visitors" that can be irksome. I think the longer tenured members here know of what I speak. In situations where it seems this is occuring the forum benefits a lot from members taking a deep breath and understanding what they may be helping along when they post in reponse to seemingly "outrageous" things. Always remember that handy "report" feature and use it if you are unsure. Keep the Mods and Admin's in the loop if something seems off...we can't be everywhere

Some folks do spend their summer's getting rises out of as many forums and people as possible...so bear that in mind .

That being said, sometimes people need help with things that many of us here might find odd, unbelieveable, or that make you shake your head. Use your judgement and remember the saying about honey and vinegar. Put your best face forward and keep it positive...the golden rule goes a long way.

ENJOY THE SUMMER...and the summer on this forum is often entertaining even if it is a bit slower.

I guess I should add Abbie to my sig now :)

I can't tell you how many times this has happened: I open a new thread and spend quite a while resizing pics, inserting them, and writing captions. Then I post and get that (#*%($#^)$@#$# "OOPS" message and POOF, everything is gone. Seriously, I think two thirds of the time I don't even bother, never even submit the thread or the post. I know this is not going to change, since it's like a fundamental difference between the previous forum, but I can't stand forums that don't let the browser cache posts. On any other forum I belong to, I could have hit my Back button after the "OOPS" screen and been back to my post composition, maybe copy it into a new post or try submitting it later. GAH!!!!!!!!! I've given up on sharing pictures.

I'm really surprised how fast people jump to conclusions on forums - maybe I'm not cut out for this kind of stuff. I actually left another forum becuase some member were getting quite hostile with others. It just wasn't fun anymore, so I came to this one.

I dunno, I guess when you post on the internet you REALLY do get everyone's 2 cents! I'm probably looking into it too much, its just funny though that I check the responses - thinking it's pertaining to my question - but instead i get responses regarding how I'm not meeting my dogs needs and my dogs are fat!?!

I would like it to be known I am very far from being a arrogant person. Facts I live by facts true facts.

By me saying that Dh, the dogs, and myself would never have to live on the street or in our vehicle if we lost our house and businesses was not arrogance it was a fact a true fact.

That really hurt to have someone you don`t know and doesn`t know you to assume you are a arrogant person for saying a true fact. No I`m not arrogant - blessed and lucky YES to have a town and a loving family and friends that would help you out if things got tight.

This so called arrogant person has worked at McDonald's when I was in college. Dropped out of college because of a car accident. Worked at a bar for 7 years (there you meet a lot of true arrogant people) Worked at a meat locker and now own a antique store (which anyone in this whole world could do if you put your mind to it.) I started in my garage. Yes Dh has a business too. Are we rich - NO. Could we be ???? We could make a lot more money then we do but I guess we aren`t driven by money. We like to enjoy life. No we don`t go on vacations every year. The last place I when was to my brothers in Illinois of his 50th birthday about 4 years ago. We have a deck, pool, and a grill. We vacation at home. If we get tired of vacationing we go into the house.

So if everyone wants to believe I am a arrogant person so be it. I guess as you don`t know me personally you have to go what you want to feel.
