Please be aware that we, the administrators and moderators, are aware of significant spamming registrations to the site. In an effort to ensure that this forum is dedicated to the respectful and appropriate support for dog lovers, along with protecting the privacy of our members, we have had to institute a temporary (we hope) change to the registration process. All users MUST be approved upon registration now, so there may be a delay for new users.

We are working to remove the "offending" registrants.

Forum Rules

(Nothing has changed, we are just putting it back at the top for a refresher for our regulars and a place to start for our new members.)

Although we all share one common passion – dogs – we are otherwise a diverse group, with different cultural backgrounds, ages, experience levels, morals and more. In light of this assortment of people, we at the Dog.Community have adopted these forum behavior guidelines:

1.)     Each member is allowed one (1) login account. Creating multiple accounts is prohibited and may result in removal of both accounts without notice.

2.)     Vulgarities, whether they be language, images or other offensive material, including, but not limited to, race, nudity or pornography will not be tolerated. The administrators and moderators shall be the sole judges of what does and does not violate the board's standards.

3.)     Debating and discussion is fine. We encourage it. It's how we all learn. However, respect your fellow members. Different posters are likely to express different opinions, and while they may differ from yours, everyone is entitled to express theirs freely. Whether it is blatant or covert, we will not tolerate rudeness, insults or personal attacks. Do not disrespect, taunt, bother, bug or flame anyone, either on the forum or via private messages or email.

4.)     "Trolls” or "Board Wars” will not be tolerated. Posts that are taunting or are otherwise inflammatory against other sites will be removed. Anyone found to be making inflammatory posts and remarks on other forums to start Board Wars will lose their posting privileges here. This rule also applies to those that, for whatever reason, feel a need to post negative remarks about this site on other forums. If you do, don't expect to be welcomed back. Furthermore, we are concerned with the activity of our own Community, not other forum. Inflammatory posts and remarks about the activity of our members on other boards should not be discussed here. If you have a legitimate concern it can be directed to an administrator – through private message or email only – it is not conversation that is acceptable for the boards themselves.

5.)     Double posting, or starting two or more threads with the same information in the same or two or more categories, is not allowed and can result in the deletion of one or both posts. We understand that sometimes a topic may fit into multiple categories, but try to pick the best one.

6.)     Multiple, repeated or meaningless posting will not be tolerated. Examples of this would be one word, "smiley” only, non-sense posts, etc. If this is done for the sole purpose of increasing your post count, we can prevent your post count from increasing from that point forward.

7.)     If you have a problem or complaint about the forum in general, or with another member, please either fill out a ticket or address it directly to the administrators or moderators. They will evaluate the situation and execute the proper actions.

8.)     Refrain from posting threads such as "Hey Doglover1234”: if you need to speak to someone or show them something, private message or email them.

9.)     Selling or solicitation of anything in the forum will be considered SPAM and is prohibited.

10.) No promotions of related sites, please. Occasionally using the name of other sites or even posting a link to a pertinent article, thread or product is not a problem, but referring to competitors' sites is considered SPAM. Links to pet-related retail sites are not acceptable. Posting links to them, placing them in your signature or profile, private messaging or emailing other members with such information is grounds for disciplinary action.

11.) Do not post links which lead to an affiliate program or any way provide personal gain. Gain is having an affiliate ID, website or if you earn money from banner impressions or click-thru's.

12.) No active links in signatures are allowed. Links to sites for personal gain, live link or not, are not allowed in your signature either. This is also a form of SPAM.

13.) In light of today's litigious society, accusatory and perceived libelous posts, whether stated as fact, perception, or heresay, shall be removed.

14.) As a dynamic and ever-changing community, we can never anticipate every situation that may occur. For this reason, we reserve the right to take any actions we deem appropriate to ensure that members and the forum itself is not abused or mistreated in any way.

These rules may be amended over time without notice.

Violations of the above rules will be dealt with using a "3 Strikes” policy, which consists of the following:

1.)     First violation will result in a non-targeted public warning on the thread in question. In cases of vulgar posts, the offensive material will be removed.

2.)     Second violation will result in a private warning, either via private message or email.

3.)     Third violation will result in a 3 day suspension.

Should any further violations occur, permanent suspension may result.

*Please note that if the need for a suspension should occur outside of business hours the administrators of the site will invoke the suspension at that time and it will be reviewed on the next business day. If the suspension is appropriate, it will stand and will not be lifted until 72 hours after it originally started. Should a suspension not stand the member will receive an email to that effect and their account will be immediately reactivated.

We ask that members keep in mind that membership to this forum is a privilege, NOT a right. As a private forum, the administrator and moderators have total say as to which members are, and are not allowed. The same rule applies for posts and threads; anything deemed to be inappropriate, as defined by these rules, will be removed, and the violators will be disciplined accordingly.

Please remember... While the administrators and moderators of this forum will attempt to remove or edit any generally objectionable material as quickly as possible, it is impossible to review every message. Therefore you acknowledge that all posts made to this forum express the views and opinions of the author and not Dog.com or its administrators, moderators or webmaster (except for posts by these people) and hence will not be held liable.

Changes to the Health forum and its subsections

Hi everyone,

We recently had a discussion amongst the staff about the Health forum, in which we decided that the structure it has had for some time now is a bit confusing. Health had 7 subsections, several of which were only rarely used. There was also input from the higher-ups, specifically requesting a homeopathic/natural remedies section.

I have begun the process of reworking the section and moving threads to their appropriate new subsections. This process is not yet complete but I wanted to let you all know now to ease any confusion.

The new Health structure will go like this:

"Health", the main part of that section, will replace "Everything Else & Miscellaneous" as the go-to forum for anything that doesn't fit in the new sections. Subsections are as follows:

"Life Stages". This will merge the "Puppy" and "Older Dogs" sections and should be used for anything specifically related to a dog's age.
"Diseases & Conditions" is simply renamed from "Illnesses, Diseases & Conditions" which was a bit long and the new name still covers everything.
"Injuries & First Aid" replaces "Injuries & Accidents", please bear in mind that this section is not intended as a replacement for vet care.
"Reproduction & Contraception" merges "Breeding & Whelping" with "Spaying & Neutering", to create a place for discussing ALL aspects of this important area of canine health.
Homeopathic & Alternative Remedies is a new section requested by our sponsor. I hope many among us find it useful.

It's our hope that this will make navigating the Health section a bit simpler for existing members and newcomers alike. When a dog is sick or injured we want to find answers and support fast, the aim of this restructuring is to help that happen.

As a final note, please remember that both my Inbox and the "How Are We Doing" section are available if anyone has input on further changes that might make the forum easier to navigate.

You may all have noticed that a bunch of the stickies....no longer are. The best reason I can come up with for this is that yesterday was the 1 year anniversary of the new software, so posts that were stickied 12 months ago have now had their stickiness "expire" and 12 months is the longest we can do it for.

I can't re-sticky posts that have had replies made to them on the new software - yet - but I am playing around and looking into it. For now, I'm sorry. I know things like the TPBM game can't be transferred into new threads but if there are any "info only" stickies that should remain up, give me a shout and I will repost them.

The majority of emails we get regarding tech support have to do with how to perform the following actions. Please read here if you are having a problem and contact myself or tech support if you don't see the answer.

To Upload Images To Your Gallery:

1. Click your "Edit Profile" link, and on the right hand side you will see a link saying "Photo Settings". Click that. Make sure your gallery is ENABLED.

2. On the right hand side of that page, you will see a link saying "New Photo". Click that.

3. On that page, click the Add/Update button.

4. You will get a new screen pop up. Make sure the circle next to "Upload File" is clicked so there is a black dot in the middle of it.

5. Click the "Browse" button, and find the image file on your hard drive that you want to upload.

6. Click "Save".

7. Type in a subject for the image, and any tags you want to add to it. Type out a description, too, if you want to.

8. Click "Publish".

To Set An Image As Your Avatar:

1. Click "Edit Profile".

2. In the column on the right hand side, click "Profile Settings".

3. Click the "Avatar" tab.

4. Set "Enable Avatar" to "Yes".

5. Browse to the location of the image on your hard drive.

6. Click "Save".

To Insert An Image Into Your Signature Space:

1. The image must be hosted remotely on a site such as PhotoBucket, which is free.

2. Click "Edit Profile".

3. Click "Profile Settings"

4. Click the "Signature" tab.

5. Insert the URL to your image, with image tags on either side of the URL, like this:

6. Click "Save".

To Set An Image To Display On Your Main Profile Page:

1. Click "Edit Profile" in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

2. Click "Tell us about your pet".

3. Fill in any/all of the fields depending on your preference.

4. Click "Select Image". This will bring up a screen of any photos you have uploaded to your gallery.

5. Select the one you want and click "OK".

6. Click "Save" at the bottom of the page.

To Publish a Blog:

1. Click "Edit Profile".

2. Click "Blog Settings" and confirm that the bold text says "Weblog Enabled".

3. Click "New Blog Post".

4. Fill in the fields.

5. Choose one of the saving options. Please note that only clicking "Publish" will actually display the blog for people to read. Both of the others will only save it.

Important note: You all have access to a control panel for handling these and other functions. Going to http://community.dog.com/controlpanel will take you into it. It's fairly easy to navigate and does make some of these things much simpler.

If your problem is not related to any of the above, please contact tech support, or me. If there is anything else you'd like to see on here, let me know.

It seems that some members feel that things are running amuck here on the forum, that our admin and moderators are doing things a bit one side or holding grudges against certain members. Actually this is as far from the truth that these particular members could be.

All suspensions are handled through Meghan and myself. We give last and final word on all suspensions. So let it be known and understood that no one except Meghan and I are to blame for your time outs, suspensions and ultimately your banning from this forum, other then yourself for exhibiting the behavior to get you to that place.

My presence may not be here on a daily basis as it once was but I am fully aware of what is going on and reading. It is when the lines are crossed that you will see me as my time permits. Meghan is also here reading, actually more then me so we are fully aware of the cliques as well as business out side of our forum.

As always, what happens on other forums, chat lists is just that. It does not pertain to this forum UNTIL you act on it and bring it to this forum.

Welcome to dog.community! Along with the new look of the forum, we've added many new features to make this more of a community atmosphere. Now you can check out and write some blogs; upload videos and photos; create profiles and more! Since this is brand new, there are some bugs that need to be worked out. We've been going through your posts and compiling a list of the problems/issues you have been experiencing and they've all been passed along to be resolved. In the future, please post all comments/concerns in the How Are We Doing? section of the forum.

I know change isn't always easy, but please bear with us and give the new format a shot. Hopefully you'll grow to love it!

Moderator Request/Reminder:Language

LANGUAGE:

Folks...Jaime...our Admin has on numerous occasions stated that this forum is to be a "family friendly" type site. We stray in varying amounts from that ideal almost daily (hand raised...GUILTY!). I for one...find that inevitable and to an extent...not a huge, hairy deal. BUT every now and again a course correction is something we should consider, before the tide carries us off too far.

That's what this is...not an admonishment from on high...not censorship...but a request to remember the phrase "family friendly" when we make posts...and select the language/terminology we use...impassioned, or blase' when we make those posts. Consider if that comment on God's son is needed, that water barrier reference, that male anatomy slang term...fit into what Admin would like for this forum.

Consider that we have teenagers, young people, old people, conservative people, mixed in among the "hang loose" and "whatever" and "it's all good" people. They have JUST as much value to our forum...and just as much right to not be left mouth agape when reading titles or content here, as you do to vent, have a laugh, make a joke...etc.

Thank you very much for reading...and even more for caring about your fellow members and this forum, in general.

Signature spaces are a great place for pictures, the name(s) of your pet(s), a quote you like - things that can give other members an idea of who you are, and what you're about.

Signatures are NOT an appropriate place to disparage or insult the methods or philosophies of another member or members, nor are they the place for offensive material including, but not limited to, racism and profanity.

A signature is part of every post made, and there will no longer be a distinction between signatures and posts. If a signature contains material that should not be there, there will be no request from a member of staff to remove it. It will be removed and the member in question contacted afterwards.

If there are any questions or if clarification is needed, please contact me privately. Public discussion of this is not needed, as it is non-negotiable. I am frankly saddened that this even needs to be addressed.

Hi everyone,

You all know that the forum has gone through some major changes recently, bringing some wonderful new features, an influx of new members who have a lot to contribute and yes, a few bugs and glitches. We welcome the first 2, and thank you all for your patience while we get the latter sorted out.

It has come to our attention that there is perhaps a lack of clarity on what is and is not a good use of the forum, or valuable posting content, so we'd like to make some things clear for the benefit of members new and old, in order that this community can continue to grow in the right direction.

1. The Report Feature.

The way in which reports are made is different than our old "ticket" system, and is in some ways an improvement. However, we would like to make it quite clear that this feature is to be used only to bring to the attention of staff posts that are unacceptable in nature or content. It is NOT to be used for complaints on staff themselves or how the forum is run. For general queries or issues with the forums, please post in the relevant section "How Are We Doing" or contact staff via PM or email. If you have a problem with a Moderator, please contact either that Moderator to see if you can work it out, or take your problem privately to an Admin. If you you have an issue with an Admin, please contact another Admin. Contact details for all of us will be at the bottom of this post. Please do not abuse the report feature, doing so makes it harder to get to all the issues that need our attention, and diminishes the usefulness of the feature.

2. Linking To Videos And External Training Content.

We would like to ask that members use good judgment when posting links to dog training videos or websites, and that you do not contribute to a thread *solely* in order to link to external content. If you are describing a technique and occasionally post a video/content link to illustrate your point that can be very useful, but for the most part we want to hear *your* experiences and for you to share your own knowledge. In particular, frequently posting links to the videos or websites of any one person/organization borders very closely on advertising for that person/organization - advertising that they are not entitled to on this forum. In the worst case scenario, attempting to follow a training technique from a video clip - which are usually small in size and have low resolution - could be dangerous, as could following a training technique written in unclear language. What you are seeing or reading is not always completely clear, and everyone should always use their own best judgment before using any training technique they have only seen or read about. Please do not post links to training clips/sites without including in the post your own experiences with that technique - how you implemented it AND how it worked for you - and a disclaimer that "trying this at home" could be hazardous and when in doubt, consulting a trainer in person is the best idea.
We are always happy to see links to home videos that our members have taken of your dogs, your vacation, or anything else appropriate that you might like to share. In that same vein, amusing or cute video clips, whether dog related or not, are perfectly fine as long as they follow forum guidelines on crudeness, profanity etc. The same is true for any funny or cute websites you might come across. Everyone likes a laugh.

3. Advertising.

Advertising your own business on this forum is subject to certain conditions, and if you would like to, please contact PicklesShore via PM to be included in the Member Business Section. Posting for personal gain in any other section, including member blogs, is forbidden. Posting a link to a product you as a consumer have used and would like to recommend is fine.

4. Dogs For Sale.

Please do not post on the forums or in blogs details of puppies or dogs you have for sale. We have a section for adoption and rescue, but advertising your own litter is not allowed - anywhere. If you are a contributing member and a breeder please post details - and puppy pictures! - of your latest litter if you are not doing so for the purpose of selling the puppies. If you tell us all about your breeding experience and there is someone on the forum who would just love to have one of your puppies they will likely get in touch with you privately.

5. Links In Signatures.

Please do not post clickable links in your signatures. We had to introduce this measure in order to reduce forum spam, and it is helpful to staff if you follow it. If a member of staff contacts you because you have clickable links in your sig, please remove them as soon as possible. URLs which are NOT clickable but link to your personal site, myspace page, blog or any other non-profit site are perfectly fine.

6. Post Edits.

We support and encourage a free exchange of ideas but there are times when we must edit or completely delete a post to remove offensive comments, prevent threads from becoming nasty and ultimately unhelpful, to rid the forum of spam or unapproved advertising or to generally maintain a pleasant forum environment. Any decision by a Mod or Admin to perform these actions is not taken lightly and is final in the context of the thread. If you feel you were unfairly edited, please contact a member of staff privately to discuss the matter in a respectful and polite way. Editing out "red ink" placed in your post by a member of staff will result in a warning from an Admin, as will rudeness in arguing the matter. Decisions on post deletions/removal are solely those of Admins and Mods, and require no input from members beyond initial abuse reports. We will not delete previously edited posts solely on the request of the poster. Red ink helps Mods/Admins to know that a post has already been attended to when reports are made, as software limitations have made this difficult otherwise. Removal or alteration of such is confusing and disrespectful to Admin/Mods and will not be tolerated.
