Tricks Anyone?

i have a couple of horses now. got a five month old mustang filly back in October - she's a year old now - and got a paint X gelding in January.

Today i was feeling productive and looked up some horse tricks websites. the gelding and I worked for a bit on bowing. we ALMOST had it, his left front leg bent as if he was going to go down, but he managed to lip the treat away before the follow through

So anyone have horses that do tricks? or have you trained any in the past?

i'm wondering if i should do some with the filly. she's a bit of a spit fire. i dont mess around with her unless there is someone else with me because she tends to get rough - she still wants to play kick. but she's brave and curious. her personality seems perfect for this sort of thing. just to see what she would do i threw a basketball into the padock. it bounced and rolled and she chased after it and nosed it around for a bit. i think the rubber smell was a turn off though.

Not sure I am not jumping the gun a bit though.

I truly miss horse showing and I asked DH two years ago "if" I could get back into my breeches in my closet (I have 10 pair) so I don't have to buy breeches, could I go to a horse show? He said yes, how is that for incentive to lose weight. Well then my darling horse goes and gets hurt and needs 6 months off, so there went any hope of horse showing. That was over a year ago. So "assuming" that agreement still stands I have been wanting to pick a show to aim for now that my horse has been sound (knock on wood) for over a year. Then gas prices jump up which increased the shipping rates, and the local show facility closed it's doors (8 miles from home barn) so my shipping would even be higher to find the next closest show. So my dream moved to the back burner.

Last month my trainer announced that our old trainer (my trainer and I were juniors together) is coming the end of March for a clinic!!!!! WOO HOO!!! Now he has been supposedly coming for about 10 years. About 5 years ago we had his plane ticket and his wife got badly hurt so he had to cancel, then other family things happen and time passed. The word is he will be here the weekend of the 28th and 29th, HOWEVER we have not seen any formal announcement at the barn. I am so excited to get to possibly do this. I think I would get more out of the clinic than a show (though I LOVE to show) and it would be cheaper than showing and no shipping involved. I still don't have an idea of how much it will cost yet so I am not 100% sure I am doing it...if he comes. I have to keep the idea open it won't happen. I plan to discuss more with trainer over the weekend. DH is on board depending on how much, we can't afford to go too overboard. We have big doggy vet bills, amongst other things. This old trainer of mine is REALLY good, he lives in VA now. I have not seen him since my last show on Pete in Sept '03 at KY. He is good friend whom I lost touch with too.

So I tried on my breeches a couple weeks ago. They are tight but I could fasten them. I will try on the boots and get them polished this weekend so I will be ready. I am so excited to have a reason to put on the breeches and boots. I will also trim up Petie (I already did his mane) and he as always is groomed to the 9's. If old trainer does not make it I will be SO disappointed, I must confess.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Stolen Medicine Hat Paint Gelding - $4000/truck reward

I am helping Keith Caughrun find his daughter's stolen horse, Max. He is a mostly white Medicine Hat paint gelding with sorrel hat and body spots in flank area so he will be easy to spot and recognize.

Max could be anywhere - we have had leads from all over the country connected to prime theft suspects, auctions, etc.

We are contacting youth and 4H clubs across the nation, hoping it will lead to someone recognizing Max. He is a 4H champion barrel racer and is willing to try anything that is asked of him so he would be a perfect horse for many youth activities. We are wanting to create an awareness in OH that will give us information that will lead to finding Max.

We DO NOT believe those who have Max at this time are connected with or know anything about the theft.

Funds have been donated to raise the reward to $4000 or Ford truck.

I've been looking at horses. Ugh. I *can't* get one thou....must remind myself of that often!

The women I babysit for has horse(7 or 8 I think, they used to have 11) and hopefully I can get her to let me ride a few of them.

Thats all I wanted to say basicly....LOL....I miss that sweet horsey smell!

So I'm not a horse person at all! Where I work, the owner hired a young girl who was a horse person to sell horse equipment and such for commission. Well the girl recently quit (for other reasons) and now the owner of the store has all this horse stuff like shampoo, condition, thrush stuff, etc. She emailed me last night asking if I wanted to take over to help market this for 10% commission on anything I sell. I told her I would try but I know absolutely NOTHING about horses. I was going to post an ad on Craig's List regarding the stuff we sell, but was wondering if putting up flyers in local barns would be a good idea (with permission of course). How else do you here about where to buy stuff like this for your horse?

I'm not one to have a favorite ;breed' but I do have a favorite color - Black, rich, jet black.

But, I've had a Saddlebred, there too tempermental for me(or mine was) for horses, as a begginer, I need something calmer, more cool headed. So, Draft breed and Quarter horses tend to work better with me. I loooove HUGE horses, so, drafts are always what I 'drool' over.

My next horse will probably be a large draft or QH, as they seen to be what 'works'....and probably a PMU.

Whats you favorite breed? Why?

I don't know if anyone has paid attention, but there is the most beautiful horse on the new ralph lauren romance commercial, it's a very muscular white horse. I tried to find it on youtube and i couldn't. I'm just curious the breed. It sort of looks like a QH, but i don't think it is...

Today I was driving past a farm where there are a couple of horses out in a small field. I noticed that one of the horses seemed to be standing & favoring one foot. Is it normal for a horse to not stand on all 4 feet @ once? I know if Grady were standing that way I'd immediately start checking the paw/leg he was favoring.

It makes me sad and angry still, but I love horses, and I really loved this horse, she was my first horse, and looking back. I did her wrong, but now I know better, I've learned, and shes safe and happy now. She's still a beautiful horse IMHO. Maybe I'm just biased thou....

She is an American Saddlebred, 15 hands or so....and I'm not sure if you can tell, she was sway-backed, which happens a lot in longer-backed horses. And, a major PAIN to fit to a saddle. LOL!

Ahhh, summer days! You would think that going bare-back would be cooler.......nope!!! Still hot as heck!!!

Purple was her color, yes? I still have that halter....jack@$$ took her halter when he got my stuff from the barn.

Our first ride together, that bit was terribly harsh on her mouth, I got her a Wonder Bit the next day.

My 'Angel'

That ^^ is the stallion that she was bred too, he is the best stallion, in both temperment and confermation. His gait was choppy for a gaited horse, but, still, a all-in-all GREAT horse! He's a Rocky Mountian Horse, naturally gaited, beautiful horse. Sadly, the foal died at birth, I'm sure she was bred back this year....

I just wanted to share a few pictures of me and my cousin's horse, whom I've "adopted" part time (she's a lawyer and doesn't get as much barn time as she'd like).

Oh, also some videos - he's a very friendly horse, and it took me about 2 seconds to teach him "stay" and "come." But after about 5 minutes of the game, and when he decided I didn't have any peppermints on me (even though he licked my hand just in case), he gave up and went back to grazing.

My mom would die if she knew I was posting this picture online, lol. But, it's the best pic I have of Aerial electronically. This is my mom on Aerial, and the reason she would die is it's before she lost some weight. Anyway, Aerial looks good in it, and I've been wanting to share a picture with ya'll forever!! So, here she is:

For those of you who don't already know, Aerial is an 18-year old Hanoverian/Thoroughbred mare, 16.2 hands, and I've had her since she was 3 years old. You can't see it in this picture, but she's blind in her left eye (due to a freak accident). Doesn't bother her, though. She's still energetic and a fantastic eventer. She's teaching my mom a lot!!

First experience with foxhunting (horse AND dog-related!)

Ok, so I haven't been on the forum much lately due to my job situation (lack of one, actually and spending all my time trying to find one!) but I did have an amazing opportunity last weekend that I just had to share. I've been riding for 20 years, and did some hunter paces, but never really got into the whole foxhunting scene. Well, I was up in NC last weekend and my mom invited me to go to something called the Blessing of the Hounds for the local foxhunting group. Apparently they do this for the opening hunt every year. So, I went, and let me say, it was the most perfect thing to do on a beautiful fall day!! My only regret is that I really wanted to be there on my horse instead of on foot, lol!

So, anyway, it goes like this. They invite the public (friends, etc) to come and enjoy the opening day with the members of the hunt. The first thing they do before taking off is the blessing of the hounds. The houndmaster and whippers-in bring out the hounds (OMG...36 gorgeous American Foxhounds...I was drooling!) and an Episcopalian (sp?) priest does a blessing to the hounds, riders, and horses. The prayer he did was just beautiful...I was so moved.

Next, the riders and dogs take off and the rest of us pile onto haywagons and follow the hunt through the woods and fields. One rider stayed with us and led us around. We couldn't stay with the whole group of riders the entire time because we were limited to where the tractors and wagons could safely go, but the scenery was spectacular, the foliage was in all its autum gorgeous colors, and the people on the wagon with us were so super nice. We sat with a retired veterinarian/horse trainer who was full of really cool, interesting stories. At several points we would have to stop because the riders were approaching, and once we stopped in this very narrow clearing and one poor girl came careening around a corner, horse out of control, and the poor thing was knocked off right beside us by a low-hanging branch. She was okay, thank goodness.

We stopped for a good 45 minutes at one point to take a break. Oh, the wagons were stockpiled with breakfast goodies (danish, muffins, etc) and drinks. But we had to stop, apparently, for the "real" drinks to come out...hehe. People started cracking open coolers full of beer, bloody marys, and mimosas.....at 10:30 in the morning! I was flabbergasted! I was afraid to drink anything because there were no "bathroom breaks" and I wasn't about to go in the woods with a bunch of strange men around, lol. Oh, and a couple times we stopped when the riders caught up to us, and some of them started busting out flasks from their saddlebags! I just never knew...hehe!!

The absolute coolest thing was when we stopped in the middle of a really big, open field. The dogs had not found a fox, so they had a rider do a "drag," which is just like it sounds...a rope with a cloth soaked in fox scent drug along the ground. He did a big, winding path around and through the field, all of which was in view from our wagons. About 1 minute later, we heard the hounds approaching. All I can say is it was simply amazing to watch 36 dogs work in a pack following a scent like that. I mean, it was really mindblowing. They would run in a line, then double-back and regroup, then take off again, barking and obviously communicating to each other vocally and physically....just amazing.

Anyway, I thought it was so cool, and thought maybe some of you might have a group near you who does something similar. If they do, GO! It's awesome!! I definitely want to go again next year!

I don't know what the movie is called or who is in the movie. I was in 5th grade when I saw it so its like 7 years ago that I saw it. The movie is about a girl that was in gymnastics but she had and accident and went blind. She went to a camp for the blind that involved horses and she went on to compete english style and that is all I remember. Has anbody seen this movie? How can I find the title?

Ok I am KiwiRyder on horse.com & I thought I would change my email address but was promptly informed I would be getting an email to reactivate my account and still no email could of been me typing retarded but who knows with the way Horse.com has been lately. Cause the email I have it on is a hotmail account & as much as I try I can not remember the password for it, so I can't even check that email to see if there is anything there.
