I love the way they work and their work ethic.

I would really like a wire haired German pointer. They can handle wheather and scrub well, i love the character, and the height is nice for me.

I love Wesites. Don't know why or how, but they are nearly the only terrier that i like a whole lot.

I think i could find a spot for a greyhound or a whippet that needs a home. I'm looking for a medium to small breed, 40 lb max, but smaller would be better, that's less intense and less maintenance than what I have now. I want a dog I can take places with me, specifically to DD's soccer games and practices and DH's theater performances and rehersals (dogs are allowed) without reactivity, barking, or the dog getting bored. DH currently works from home and I work nights, we have two kids ages 8 and 11, two cats, and four herding breed dogs...don't want anything that needs to be clipped, but brushing and shedding are ok. Considering Pugs and Whippets.

Doberman colors

Can back & tan parents have split litters - half balck/tan, half blue?

My next dog (many, many years from now hopefully) I want to be small, active, without too much grooming required (at least not as much as the Cockers), friendly towards people and animals. I don't think terriers would fit my lifestyle, but sporting dogs definitely do. I took a dog breed quiz and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel came up as one of the top choices and the more I read about them the more I'm loving. I'm also reading a lot about heart problems they're prone to- is this a problem with every single Cavalier?

Tell Me About Dobermans please.

Many of you know already, that I intend to get a dobe as my next dog. That likely won't be for several years yet, but I'm feeling especially inquiry-ish today. I have an extensive list of things I would tell to anyone thinking of getting a husky, but so far, I haven't found much that might deter me from a Doberman.

Once the girls are in school full time, at least 5 years away for Kelci, and Crusher at least is no longer with us, hopefully at least few more after that, I want to slightly change my dog ownership style. That might sound funny, but neither of my dogs are dogs that can really just go everywhere with me. Onyx might, if it weren't for Crusher. But really, I have to be on high alert everywhere I take my dogs, incase of other dogs, running kids, birds, cats, cars, blowing leaves, open spaces etc, that I could never really relax with them at any sort of function. Part of that is obviously training. I understand that now. But with 3 kids, and already established bad habits, its tough to find good places to try rehabilitating my dogs. I do what I can, but party dogs they will never be. For that matter, I rarely see people bringing huskies along with them to gatherings past the puppy stage anyway, so perhaps it is partly a breed thing.

Anyway, when I do start over, I want a dog that can come everywhere with me from the beginning. I've talked to my dad about dogs lots, and he's always loved the idea of a dog at work, so this dog will come to work with me. He'll need to be socialized with lots of people from the start, but he'll probably be contained in a crate or something during the rush anyway, just to be safe. I want a dog that will eventually just walk out the door at my side, and go straight to the car, with no leash. I want a dog that will hang out with me at the beach, or play ball at the park. I want a dog that will want to be with me, and not just think of me as a means to get where he wants to go. I want a dog for camping, and hiking. For fishing and ice fishing too...do people put touques on their dobes? I do have to admit, the short coat is another bonus for me, after dealing with 2 huskies for so long.

I would love to do SAR, or something similar, but I'm not sure there are any sort of clubs nearby where I could get into that. I might talk with the K9 handlers though, they'd likely know. Also, I haven't really decided if I want to show or not. The more I look into it, the more I think I might, though breeding is still not something I ever plan to do.

Anyway, Doberman people, tell me about your breed. What do I need to know? What do I need to be prepared for? What should I look for in a breeder? Tell me everything, including whether you think I might or might not be a good match for a Dobe.

Edited: Because when I reread, I realized it sounded like I was hoping Crusher would pass away just a few years after the girls are in school....that is not the case, honest.

What are the top 5 best breeds for allergy sufferers? It seems I'm more allergic to my poodle than any other dog out there. I have a high shedding Terrier mix that I don't have any problems with, nor most other breeds of dog.

My docs theory is I'm not allergic to dogs so much as the allergens my poodle brings in on his coat.

And in essence he (the doctor) said poodles are one of the WORST breeds for allergy sufferers.

My mom (a nurse) always had poodles in the house because she felt and still feels they are hypoallergenic and good for allergy sufferers.

I've always had a bit of trouble around poodles but never realized it until after I had been around other types of dogs.

What are the Top 5 Best Breeds For Allergy Sufferers?

What are the Top 5 Worst Breeds For Allergy Sufferers?

____________________

after allergy testing I discovered I am not allergic to dogs , but most outdoor allergens such as grass, pollen, ragweed, the list goes on.

I'm asking more as a general allergy sufferer and for those who are somewhat allergic to dogs.

I am however highly allergic to cats I discovered.

His former owners, who acquired him as a wee thing (and signed him over at about 10 weeks) said he was a Shih Tzu mix. I do buy that as he has the Tzu lip (or the Gimme lip as we now call it) and some really funky tooth layout in his mouth (which, as one who intubates a lot of dogs, seems to be a Tzu thing). He doesn't have an over or underbite. Shih Tzus are also THE breed around here...everyone has them of varying qualities, and everyone wants to breed Shih Tzu pups or mixes thereof. I'd guess there's at least one or two other mystery breeds in there though, if not more. There's a reason we call him our Generic Brown Dog

His coat started out, when we brought him home, as all wooly puppy coat that shed a ton. (granted he was still sickly) But, as it grew out (at first with a really weird wispy action going on) it seems to lack an undercoat. It's long, but a coarse texture..if that makes sense. He never tangles, doesn't require brushing aside from after a bath, and all he requires is a towel dry and a quick comb through and he dries in under ten minutes on his own. It seems to be staying this length so far..so it doesn't seem to be the ever growing hair. The hair on his legs is shorter than his body coat, and he has impressive muppet paw hair. While one may get a hair or two on the comb dring brushing, he otherwise does not seem to shed.

His ears are much shorter than they look..they're kind of small and pointy...lie a yorkie ear folded over. His ears stood totally for over a month as a pup, then went down. I'm sure if we'd cut the ear hair at this time (his coat was growing) they'd probably have stayed standing, but since we think his ears cute no matter what they do, we left him with his grand ear hair. The ear hair makes his ears look about twice as long as they really are.

He doesn't have a lot of prey drive (aside from catching outdoor birds...and I think he just finds that fun), so although he probably has a bit of some sort of terrier, the terrier attitude is thankfully muted. (Jules is enough terrier for everyone). Grimm is a very, very happy dog..always smiling and tail wagging. He has a very loving and gentle personality. Also, haven't weighed him for a bit, but I'd guess he's about 15 lbs or so. He's also very athletic...he bounces a lot and his only speed is some variation of Run.

Here's a variety of Grimm pics

We adopted kali from a shelter and we know her mother was a purebred GSD, but not sure what the father could be. Here are some pictures of her from 5 months on. One thing, her tail curls up slightly when she gets excited, but when we walk her it down.

Fox Terrier at an animal shelter for the last three weeks. He turned out to have kennel cough the past two weeks and I am finally getting close to where I think I will get to meet him out of his cage in the next couple of days.

I thought he might be a Parsons Russell Terrier or a mix, but they say Fox Terrier.

They say he came in as a happy stray and he was with a family for a while who found him. The family said he was good with their kids and other dogs.

Of course he has that little devilish and characteristic look in his eye that I like in a terrier and he maintained eye contact with me when I petted him through the bars of his cage. I got a little kiss on the hand. While all the other little dogs were barking their heads off, he didn't say a word.

The box on his description card that says "cuddly" was not marked, but that's ok. My last dog was a terrier/hound mix and he was affectionate, but not necessarily "cuddly." I read somewhere that they can be kind of aloof and then somewhere else they like to be handled a lot.

Anyway, my last dog was hard to train in terms of "sit, stay, and come when called." He would eventually come around, but he had a mind of his own a lot. I just knew I would never be able to totally rely on him to do what I asked. It was part of his breeding somehow. I had him for 16 years and figured this out finally after two.

I've been reading about the Fox Terrier breed and I like that they are active in that I could probably take one for a 2 mile walk or a hike.

So, if any of you own a Foxy or even a JRT, are they all hard to obedience train to where you can let them off a leash at a dog park possibly? Do they do well at agility and that does that possibly make them more obedient in general?

Do they like a lot of toys to play with or do they chew things around your house? I am home most of the day and don't have a yard, but he will get a good walk and some smaller walks every day to go out.

I have read different things about them being good or not good with other dogs and kids. However, this one seems like he would be good around other dogs from what I read. And he has that scruffy little bearded look that my other dog had. So I am not so sure if he is a full smooth Fox Terrier. They seem to have very short hair around the face from what I have seen so far online.

Thanks for any info.

Cat

Irish Terriers

I've just been researching Irish Terriers and they seem like awesome dogs! Health issues, activity level, around kids, other dogs, shedding, average weight, are they carriable (I prefer a dog I can pick up in certain situations) and all around how they are for pets in general. German Spitz

Due to lack of responsible breeding, the Pomeranian can be found all over in many different shapes, sizes, and colors.

To learn the history about this breed check out the thread "Pomeranian 101"

Some books of mine even have a reference to "the three faces of Poms" while others believe there is and should only be one.

Today I got a website suggestion from a breeder telling me to take off a picture of my "Kayla" because "she is a disgrace to the breed and a horrible example of what a Pomeranian looks like"... hmmm ouch...

[check out www.pomeranianpuppies.org to see my new website i'm building... its very far from done]

WELL yes Kayla does look exactly like a Small German Spitz; but here in the US we call them Pomeranians! She has a 10 generation pedigree, registration papers, etc. What I did learn is this does not make her a pure bred standard regulation Pom!

Hopefully one day we truly can get this breed under control. What I used to not know, and what many don't know, is how horrible of a situation this truly is. There are puppy mills that line the nation filled with "pomeranians". Hundreds of back-yard-breeders iresponsibly breeding what they THINK are Pomeranians then sell them for ridiculous amounts of money... (check out www.pomeranianpuppies.net for BAD examples of Poms!)

My website is just a start in trying to educate the madness gone wrong with this breed... but I was wondering if anyone wanted to debate it here?

If a Pom does not look exactly like a Ch. AKC pure bred... should we stop calling them Pomeranians and call them German Spitz??? Or are they the same thing???

She's happy to give me rent free time to be home with my German Shepherd pup so he can be thoroughly socialized in this formative time (what an angel she is!) However, I do eventually have to get a J-O-B. When I do return to work, T-Bone is gonna be a lonely fella. I would also just like for him to have a buddy. In 6months to a year, I am considering adding a Doberman or Bull Terrier to the family. There's already a dobe thread running, so I thought I'd just ask about BTs. I'd prefer a mini, personally. I'd also like to adopt an adult. I've heard this dog can be very DA and difficult to train. Anyone had first hand experience? I have known a few BTs that were absolute dolls, even with other dogs. Tell me some pros and cons!
She is currently 20lbs and she stays between 18-21lbs

She is almost 2 years old

Here is a bit about her:

She is a very smart dog. She is a hard worker, eager to learn. Very food motivated. She is great with other dogs, respectful/slightly fearful of cats. She is great with people, adults, kids, and the elderly. She graduated top of her obedience class. She is quite the couch potato, very lazy but once she gets out and going she is a very fast, very energetic dog. I've never seen a dog run like her and have so much stamina. She understands inside is quiet time and outside is play time.
I couldn't ask for a better dog.

This last weekend my application was approved and I went and picked Miley up! I was told that she was purebred yellow lab, but on the small side. Miley is adorable and absolutely love her already, but either she really is small for a labrador, or I just don't have the right perception. She is estimated to be 6 months old, and she just barely reaches my knees. She probably weighs about 25lbs or so...she just seems so tiny. How big is a 6 month old female supposed to be? She doesn't look like a "puppy" to me...but is she still going to grow? Do you think she really is a purebred?

Beagles in blue merle? not...

Here is an interesting page a fellow Beagler made after doing some serious research into the "phenomenon" of the Blue Dapple/Merle Beagle.
