    Cat in the Kennel

     Oops.

When I got home, I let the dogs out into the kennel.  Its right off the porch, surrounded by a 8 foot fence on 2 sides, and my house and porch on the other two.  Apparently there was a cat in there though.  I heard no animals sounds, but maybe a hiss.  Just a flurry of movement, which was not normal for them when they first go out.  Normally they just go out, pee, then they might wrestle around a bit.  So the movement caught my attention.

I recalled them right away, and Onyx came back in pretty quick.  Its dark out there, so I couldn't see anything.  I went and turned on Kale's bedroom light which shines into part of the kennel, and I could see Crusher trying to stuff his head between the floor of the porch and the top of the wall underneath.  Its nowhere near big enough for him to get through, but it must have been big enough for a cat.  Sigh...

He came back in after a second command, and a lure of cookie.  He has a couple blood streaks on his muzzle, but other than that seems to be fine.  I can't tell if the blood is from him though.  Doesn't look like any cuts or anything.  Maybe inside his nose?  I know cat scratches can be bad for infections, do you think I have anything to worry about?  He's not licking at his nose more than normal, or bothering it in any way.  It could have been from the cat.  Stupid cat.

Have I mentioned before that I hate people that let their cats wander?  I feel like I should go take a look for this cat, just in case, but I really doubt I'd find it.  There are no street lights here, and without taking a dog to track it, which I'm sure they'd love to do right now, I have very little chance of finding it.  Ugh...what the heck would a cat be thinking, going into a dog's kennel?  There's no food in there.  No shelter, without coming up into the porch, through the doggy door.  It must smell like dog, to a cat anyway.  Stupid Cat.

Hmmm...upon further inspection, it might be in his mouth that's cut.  His bottom lip is slightly bloody.  How do I clean that?

Cats outdoors face so many risks.  We get cats in the yard sometimes and so far they have escaped unharmed.  I usually make noise before I let the dogs out back to give any critters time to make their escape. As for the worry about infection, I would think a healthy dog would be ok.  A squirt bottle is handy for getting to hard to reach areas to rinse them off.

I do not know what the laws are where you are but where I live in New York State, cats are considered feral animals.  There are no laws for keeping a cat inside or on your property, lol.  I am sure it was frustrating, but it could have been a feral cat.

    Re: Cat in the Kennel

Cats here are subject to containment laws just as dogs are.

From the looks of the kennel, it was the cat that was bleeding, not just Crusher's lip.  (his lip looks completely normal this morning btw)  I checked the kennel before I released the dogs this morning, then I watched them go out into it.  They both beelined to the wing to sniff their then they broke to pee.  After that Crusher went back to the area he was trying to get through last night.  There are drops of blood sprayed all around that corner, and while I'm no CSI, I'm sure they didn't come from his lip.  No sigh of the cat though.

    Poor Cat, and stupid owners.

I'd put a little betadine on anything that looks like it could be a cut. Cat scratches are NASTY - esp. if its a cat that's been wandering around outside for a while... they kill their dinner with those claws...

Don't underestimate the amount of blood that can come from a lip that is being shaken around.  Could have been from his lip and the cat is fine.  But yeah, poor cat, stupid owners.

    Re: Cat in the Kennel

Maybe it was a feral cat with no owners.  IDK unless you have seen the cat before and know its someone's cat, I would be more apt to assume that it is a cat without a home or owner.

Maybe there should be leash laws on cats, lol.  I guess all the farmers around me would be in big trouble with their barn cats then.

I have two friends that are animal control officers and they do not do anything for feral cats or cats in general...unless they are injured.

In most places, there ARE leash laws for cats, but most chose to ignore them. Have you ever tried to catch a feral cat? Not easy, not at all. They don't run over to you like a dog would...

In my county - cats must be contained behind a fence or on a leash - just like dogs.

    Re: Cat in the Kennel

We don't see many homeless or feral cats around here.  But most people here that have cats, just let them wander.  Those cats tend to keep other cats from coming into the neighborhood, I would imagine, but they are a nuicense themselves.  The dig up and pee in flowerbeds and pots.  They've dug out tunnels to get under my house.  Fought with skunks and ended up getting sprayed, while under my house, 3 times this summer alone.  Now this one in the kennel.  I can't stand cats now because of it.  I never was a cat person, but I'm really turned off of them now.  I'm glad Crusher didn't kill the cat, but I really wish there was a way to clue these people in.

maybe the cat coming home all bloody (whether his blood or the dogs) will be a wake up call for the owners.

My cat got out for ONE night - and I felt like the worst person in the world... I love my cats, but I'm not much of a 'cat person'

    Re: Cat in the Kennel

I don't understand why people let their cats outdoors. Having had to treat abscesses (at work, not with my own cats) and other outdoor related injuries, I can say that an outdoor life is no fun for a cat long term.  Three of my cats were dumped outdoors before being found and then adopted , and I can say that none of them have an inkling to go out.
