    Canine Facial Expression Pictures

     Hi everyone!

I am doing this for a friend... and for anyone who is curious about such things. Its surprising that a lot of people dont know the facial expressions of a dog. i mean yeah there are the obvious doggy smiles or the angry snarls.... but there are several other "emotions" that a dog can express. The only ones i could find were pictures of dogs with exaggerated features (Chowchow, Pug, Boxer, English Bulldog) My friend owns a Shiba Inu that recently snapped at a kid without any signs of feeling threatened. The majority of us here believe that there are ALWAYS signs... even slight ones. Facial expressions being one..

So if anyone happens to have any pictures they could contribute my friend(and her family) would greatly appreciate it. plus it would probably be very helpful for novice dog owners.

    Thanks!

    Re: Canine Facial Expression Pictures

I highly recommend the book "calming signals" by Turid Rugaas - has a lot of great illustrative pictures!

    From my own files...

Rascal's a little hard to read IMO because his curly tail doesn't cue as much as, say, a Shepherd tail might. But his ears are quite expressive if you learn the nuances of his ear angles, and watching for tense muscles is also a dead giveaway.

Here's him a little uncomfortable but not at all frightened - note his ears are back a little bit (kind of angled parallel to his head, instead of sticking out perpendicular like, well, ears). His eyes are slightly closed and he's a little bit rigid. He's more wary/confused than upset at this point.

For contrast, here's him fairly stressed (by me being too close to him with the camera, and forcing him to hold still instead of run away) - notice the ear position,  upright posture (almost leaning back away from me), and him licking his lips in a submissive gesture.

And again as comparison, this is him happy and relaxed - corners of the mouth soft and relaxed, kind of like a "smile," ears in a natural position (listening for something), body relaxed. He looks like he could easily be rolled over into a happy napping position, right? His eyes are still a little squinty because he's looking into the sun, though.

Here are 2 more that I think are funny contrasts:

Rascal happy, being held for a picture - perky ears, relaxed mouth, relaxed and droopy limbs:

Rascal very unhappy, being held for a picture - notice the ear position, tightened facial muscles, and dilated eyes (I was taking this picture of us myself, so the camera was too close to him, so he was unhappy - I starred out the face of my friend because I don't know if she wants her picture online):

GIN!!!!!  where the heck have you been!

If you can get her a copy of Stanley Coren's, How To Speak Dog,  it has some great illustrations of facial expressions.  Ear positions, forhead, eyes, teeth, open mouth, closed mouth...I wonder if you can find them somewhere online.

Here is a hard stare, sans teeth or lip curl...

    This resulted after...

same dog with a less threatening stare/look

Tootsie, is so uncomfortable here, I'm surprised she didn't pee her pants:

First she hates the camera and I made her lay down in her new bed ( the bed was never used  and given away).

Shooter, with a very hard stare & giving a warning.

    Avoiding eye contact.

Posturing.  It was a play invitation on Bevo's part.  Chyna was serious though.

Bevo a little uncomfortable.  This is actually his guilty look.  (He was eating my roses.)  He is very easy to read because of his ears.
