    Carpet Eating

I know that this subject has been touched on a number of times in this forum but it always seems to be dealing with puppies that are just going through a chewing stage, my girl is going to be 5 years old in December and has always had problems with chewing carpet. When she was a puppy she did chew on carpet, linoleum and sheet rock but we thought that she had grown out of that phase. Now she has found a spot in the carpet of the house that we have been living in for about two years that she won't leave alone. I have sprayed some of the anti chew spray on it but she went at it again yesterday while my wife and I were at work. She had a kong filled with peanut butter and a raw hide bone at her disposal.

We closed the door to the bedroom today so she can't get to the spot but I'm worried that she is going to rip up the carpet at the door, which she did a few months ago. I hate to crate her during the day but am thinking that it might have to be done and she will have to earn her way back out.

Ollie has always been a very needy dog, she wants cuddle time and affection which we are always willing to give her. But my wife and I train for triathlons and do workout before or after work. We always try to plan our days and workouts around Ollie so that she isn't left home alone for more than a standard work day time period. I'm hoping that this is just a phase that she is going through because this is really frustrating.

I would definitely start crating her again.  Not just for your carpte's sake, but for her own safety as well.  Blockages due to eating foreign materials are scary things to have to deal with!

Can Ollie workout with you sometimes?  I am an avid runner/tri competitor and my dogs love to go for a run with me.  We run every morning, & that usually tires them out enough to keep them calm for the day.

I did mean to mention that as well. Luckily the temperature here in Texas is starting to come down and so she can go on all of our runs with us so hopefully that will help. She love to go on runs!

This is definitely a dangerous habit that can lead to a hefty veterinary bill and, in some cases, a fight for your dog's life! At the very least, it's a hassle to have to replace your carpet. We all know how  much that costs!

It can be caused by boredom or need to exercise her jaws. Is she getting enough mental and physical exercise?

Try giving her some rawhide chews. And also, try to tire her out before you leave for the day.

I also agree with the crating thing. Definetly, definetly start crating her again!

I would agree with crating as well.  I know it seems mean but if it can make a difference it would be well worth a try.  I had to crate Pudge when we got him because he was my husbands dads dog and he was allowed to potty in the house!  So if we were gone he was in his crate and he got the point after a few weeks that the house is not a potty spot.  We would just say kennel and in he would go. . .he never goes in the kennel now unless he wants to sleep in it for a bit.  He also was rewarded for going in his kennel unless of course it was because he had messed in the house.  Just don't give in or it might get worse.
