    kpwlee:
Bugsy is terrible about going between people's legs - I like you am 5'9" with long legs but he was goofing around with my mom (5'2") and took her out.  It as hysterical

That made me laugh.  One of the first "cutesy" things that I taught Heidi was "Peek-A-Boo."  What was I thinking?  So, she thinks its fun to either walk all the way through somebody's legs; OR, just stick her head through and look up as if to say....well, here I am.  Treat me.  Embarrassed  BTW...I'm 5.2 too.  LOL  So, my DH and Heidi have this daily routine since the beginning.  When he arrives home and is shutting the gate at the end of the drive way, she hauls a$$ down the drive way and runs through his legs....Its hilarious.  You have to visualize her running like a rocket and him getting ready for her standing kind of bow legged.  Big Smile

I've only had large dogs during my adult life....wouldn't have it any other way.   Heidi and Bruder are not especially large, both ~70 pounds, but as we all know...Buddy is the largest, most sweet loving dog ever.  They all just want to be as close as possible to me (or each other).

I think it would be cool to have a Mastiff; or a Swiss Mountain Dog or a Pyr; but I'm historically a Lab/GSD kind of gal.

Re: That's IT! I want a big dog now!

I LOVE big dogs! There is just something about an animal so large and powerful who would do ANYTHING for you. I don't own a giant one, I have a 110lb Rottie. He is a giant cuddlebug, he is constantly happy and just loves life. He's not allowed in the bed at night but somehow I wake up every morning cuddling with him (he jumps in once FH gets up in the morning - I sleep for about another hour).

The hair isn't bad for me, he has short hair. There still gets to be a lot of it, but I vacuum about once every three days and that's fine. I did that when we just had the beagle too.

Timmy is convinced that he fits on everyone's lap. He loves to climb in your lap and just sit there. It's pretty ridiculous looking.

One day I would love to own a Berner, Great Pyrenees, Newfoundland, St. Bernard and Great Dane! Not all at the same time - I'm not crazy :)

Both our Rottie's were this way too, I do miss them!

LOL, Our 125lb Shadow was the same way, he would be so gentle when climbing onto your lap, lol, "not a lap dog???excuse me, I am just a loveable puppy!"

Hehehe Timmy is gentle about it too!  He is quick and not so gentle about most things, but when climbing on a lap, he crawls up there all sweet and nice.

I am just gonna say this once...Cleo has a few nicknames...but the one my husband gave her is the best...

Her nickname with him is "Slapn*ts"

And if you can figure out why, you probably also can figure out why he thinks "High Five" is THE stupidest trick one can teach any dog over about 27" tall.

LOL we never taught Timmy high five, yet he has this insane ability to ALWAYS "accidentally" slap/punch FH in his "area"  One time we were play wrestling and Timmy watched for a bit, then decided that I was losing and that he MUST help me out.  He ran over to us, waited until the perfect moment and WHAM!  Punched FH in his "area" and promptly turned and walked away.  I died laughing.

My Shadow is 26 inches to the shoulder, at least 36 inches long, maybe more, and weighs 65 lbs. And still thinks he's a lap dog. He will climb up into my lap, even at the computer, and plop his head down on my chest or shoulder. He can be so close when excited, he can step on your feet. When you come back from somewhere, he's got to sniff you to find out where you have been. Fur everywhere. Learn to love the fur.

See, to me, Shadow doesn't seem like a giant dog, Ron. :P He's the same size as Mal and most male collies! :P And collies aren't giant!

Re: That's IT! I want a big dog now!

Shadow is not Giant breed but he is somewhat of a large breed, a mix of Siberian Husky and Labrador Retriever. I treat him as a large breed because of the Lab heritage, which may or may not include hip dysplasia, common among largish mediums up to large and giant breeds. According to most dog food labels, he is large breed because he weighs over 50 lbs. DW is 5'  5 1/2" and Shadow can put his paws on her shoulders when he stands up on his hind legs. And 26 inches to the shoulder is over AKC standard height for both breeds.

Well after having lived with minpins, toy poodles and bichons, any dog over 30 lbs is going to seem large to me :) LOL

Our big dog is a lab/golden retriever mix.  He's the nicest and most playful dog we've ever had and the whole family just loves him to death!  He loves to be around people and is very friendly to the neighbors when we walk by them on our walks.  He enjoys tons of activities including fetching both in and out of the water and is an excellent bird hunter.  I hope you enjoy having a bid dog as much as we do when you get yours!

Re: That's IT! I want a big dog now!

all i have ever had were big dogs...they are my love...currently im owned by a Beauceron (75 lbs), Akita (135 lbs), German Shepherd (6 months- approx 50 lbs im thinking), and APBT (70 lbs).  Ive also owned (and my one true love) a Tibetan Mastiff, golden retriever, and a presa canario.

I'll mention the akita as a xl breed though, since they seem to differ a bit from some of the other breeds mentioned...as for hair- only for a few months out of the year do you worry about shedding.  But boy during those months keep out the blaster and the vacuume!  Youll need it!  And Diesel never droolls...unless of course hes been drinking water, where he tends to get a mouthfull and Imediatly walk away from the bowl...leaving a loveely trail accross the floor.  Not too much of a leaner.....until you scratch the special spot on hhis back under where his tail curls- then you have the leaning & rubbing on you, back arched up, head in the air, toungue hainging out!

Re: That's IT! I want a big dog now!

Not referring to your boy...but the breed in general...

Akitas are supposed to be a large breed...IMO they are being bred much too big and out of standard these days. They are supposed to be agile enough to hunt in rough terrain, all day long and handle themselves in a scrap and many I see now are all dewlap, wrinkled head massive skull and Saint like bone...incorrect IMO.

I saw that trend coming long ago and it was one of many reasons I am no longer in the breed as more than an admirer. I still love them but many I see lack the spring in the step and the quickness of movement that always went with alert, powerful when I had them years ago.

Breeds change over time and the Akita has gone from HUNTING, bear to looking like one...lol. But as they are mainly companions these days I suppose that is to be expected. The Club should really be looking more into weightpull or hunting trials even for the breed...
