2 year old lab is pooping/peeing in his kennel

    Help!

My husband and son got a 2 year old lab about a week ago.  This dog has been trained to hunt and we were told he is house broken.  We have been keeping him in a kennel until we are sure he is.  The first five days or so he did great but the last few days he has pooped and peed in his kennel.  Can someone tell us what we are doing wrong?  Tonight he was running around for 3 hours or so and we put him in there for an hour and went to let him out and he had peed!!

It's very possible that he is not relieving himself when he has the opportunity.  Dogs don't necessarily understand that they should do their business when we let them outside.  They may run around playing and having a good old time and then get popped in a crate and desperately need to go.

Another thing to consider is his feeding/elimination schedule.  Most dogs are pretty consistent if you are consistent about feeding meals close to the same time every day.

He's still adjusting to your home and schedule.  Dogs raised as pets and housetrained properly don't want to soil their kennels.   The fact that he is doing this kind of worries me but it's hard to know what could be happening without more information.  Have you talked to the person you got the dog from and told them what is happening and asked for their advice/input?

When its potty time, I go with and tell her "potty" and make sure she does. If I just let her out, she'll do everything, but "potty".

Not necessarily. I own an almost 2 year old dog who was trained just as my other dogs, and urinates in her kennel at least twice a week, within 3 hours of being placed in it. She will also poop in there. She's been mine, since 4 1/2 months. She's completely obedience trained, and fabulous at that, but she pees wherever she feels like peeing. It's gross, but I deal with it.

I would be a little concerned about a UTI. Also, is he eating on a schedule?

Should have said "in most cases" dogs won't soil their kennels........ :)   Blanket statements never cover all dogs or all situations and I know better than to make them.

I am by no means an expert but....we have a Berner and a Lab X  almost 2 yrs old.  Our Berner you can almost set a watch by when he is going to need to go.  1st thing in the morning, definately immediately after eating in the evening, and one more time before bedtime.  The Lab X totally different yes he wants to go out first thing in the morning...but with nose to the ground....hunting varmits is much more important than relieving yourself, ha!   I dont think I have actually "seen" him relieve himself in a very long time he doesnt go in the house and seems to be able to hold it much longer than our Berner.   I am wondering if it has something to do with  "way too busy when he is outside"... or maybe even has something to do with the kennel itself.

    OP, how's he doing lately?

Are you 100% sure he's been housebroken? I know a lot of people that train/hunt with Labs keep them as outdoor dogs soley. Do you know anything about how the previous owner kept him? Dogs don't usually potty where they sleep, many like a clean "den", but I guess it does happen. Like others asked, is he on a feeding/potty schedule? And before he's kenneled is he pottying (pee and poop)?
