    Re: Dog Clothes...Cool or Cruel

Dog clothes for function (short-coated breed in the winter, booties to protect the feet, etc.) I have no problem with.  I have little need for them since my dog is well equipped to deal with winter (much more so than I!).  I've contemplated booties to protect her feet against the snow and ice, but she hates them and there were really only a couple days last winter that it really bothered her feet.

I also have no problem with costumes for Halloween or silly Santa hats for Christmas pictures.

But I think it's really unnecessary and sometimes cruel to dress dogs in silly outfits all the time.  They can overheat, they look ridiculous, and they can have issues when meeting other dogs if their body language is misconstrued because they're wearing a dress or something.

    BTW, what's a "Chiwat"?

Sounds like another one of those very expensive designer mutts.  When a trainer has no idea what breed you have, it's probably not a breed lol.

Anyway, back OT - I think clothes are ok if the dog lives in a climate ill suited to his hair coat, or if the dog doesn't mind.  Some of our pups are real hams - others don't care for it.  If the dog hates clothes, I don't force the issue, I just love them in their birthday suits:-)

My puppers have rain coats and winter coats… they are house dogs and I wouldn’t take them out in a winter storm without a coat. DH doesn’t agree but the puppers all come back to me for their coat when they want to stay out in the snow with him. They spend way too much time indoors to have the necessary coat to be comfortable, not to mention they are clipped all summer. Before they had rain coats I used three or more towels every time they had to potty. I have to admit they each have a Halloween costume too, mostly for party invitation photos.

When necessary for weather conditions, clothes are fine, but not for fashion or "dress up".

My entire family love Penn State Football but my parents do not like dogs at all. I have a jersey for zeke and taught him to bark when everyone cheers loudly... It was a sure fire way to win over the rest of my family. Zeke loves people so overall it's a win win for him also.

It's difficult to say. I guess it depends if it's for human amusement or the dog actually needs something on (sensitive skin, very short coat and it's cold outside) You know what I mean...

Dogs don't care to get dressed for fun, they don't get it. but for people it's amusing...

    Hmmm....

Don't tell my dogs that they don't get it! You might get told offBig Smile My Emma literally pulls clothing and collars off of shelves, when she's asked what she wants at dog shows or pet supply stores, and tries to put them on herself.

I am new to this whole scene so forgive me if I do it wrong. Big Smile To the whole Cool or Cruel conflict. I went through a stage whenever my pomeranians were puppies but I realized just how much hair they really did have. So I have since sold all of their clothing. They do however have a Halloween costume but for christmas they will just wear bandannas.

Also, Anyone wanna make me a signature? I sure wish I knew how.

Caramel is a TOTAL clothes horse!  She's a diva (well, she thinks she is) and is SO happy when I put clothes on her.  She struts!  Unfortunatly she's between a S and XS and nothing really fits her.  I have to find really stretchy XS's and even then she looks like a stuffed sausage. Still, she loves it.

The rest of them do NOT want to wear clothes though the Dane wears her coat when it's cold.  The boys have been laughed at by the redneck dogs so they run when I bring their coats out.

I think it's fine to dress them up sometimes - it depends on the dog and why.  My JRT is named for Reggie White and Green Bay is my favorite team.  So every game day he wears his Packer jersey.  Bella gets a new Halloween costume every year because our training facility has a yearly trick-or-treat open house.  She also has a winter coat but thats for function not for fun.
