    When to get first shots?

At 6 weeks or 8 weeks? The vet says 6 weeks but that seems so early. Especially with pups as small as the ones I have here now.

    What do you all think?

Re: When to get first shots?

Oh, it's been a few years, but I'm thinking 12 weeks was when I started vaccines...and only parvo and distemper.  I'm trying to remember Dr. Dodd's protocal, and failing, but I think it was 12-15-18, or maybe 10, and up.  Callie is the one who would know for certain.  Absolutel not at 6 weeks though.

I think it's 9-15 weeks that pups loose mommas immunity so vaccines BEFORE then are wasted, plus they are hard as heck on the pup.  Again, Callie is gonna know all this....my brain seems not to be firing on all cylinders this morning.

These are Dr. Jean Dodds protocols - and she recommends NOT starting before 9-10 weeks *and* using modified live vaccines, not the "combo" shot.

Hopefully that link will work this time.

Not arguing at all.  Just honestly wondering.  Would these pups still have their mom's immunity?  They haven't been nursing from her.  They've been bottle fed.  Is the immunity right from the womb?  or through the milk?  As humans we pass immunities on through Colostrum right?  Is it not the same with dogs?

Thanks Callie. I was thinking around 9 weeks sounded good to start shots.

I forgot to mention that these pups only feed from their momma once. I've been bottle feeding them from the second day they were born. So yeah I think you're right Candace I dont see how they would still have immunity from mom.

Re: When to get first shots?

Being that these puppies likely have little to no immunity...and are in contact with dogs that attend SHOWS which are a known hotbed for diseases....I would vaccinate at 6 weeks. It's all very good to follow protocols...but these babies are very very vulnerable considering the situation they live in...with multiple dogs that attend dog shows. Your dogs may be vaccinated but unless you are dipping them in bleach after every show they can EASILY carry Parvo home to your babies. Is that worth the risk?

eta: single Parvo vacc followed a few days later by another single for Distemper and kind go that route. If you have to combo them do the smallest number "in one" you can.

cholostrum is passed on in NEW mother's milk.  So, it's my understanding, that the FIRST nursing contains the most maternal anti-bodies and that diminishes over the next 3 days.

So honestly?  I'm going to disagree with Gina on this one, altho I understand her point about what your other dogs may bring in on their feet.  Except what's passed has likely already been passed (with a 9 day incubation) -- and the whole point for waiting is to bypass maternal immunity.

But also remember -- these are chis and they are MORE prone to breed-related health immune issues than most breeds.  Demodex is HUGE (in chis -- and particularly in not-well-bred chihuahuas) and frankly no way would I vaccinate them until their bodies are old enough to really be receptive and deal with the vaccine.  You may not want to wait until 10 or 11 weeks, but I sure as heck wouldn't do it at six weeks.  I wouldn't want you to wind up with a whole litter with demodex to contend with (and that can happen once you bury the immune system with vaccines if the immune system isn't strong enough to receive them.)  It's a very tough call, but if you vax at 6 weeks that's why they vax AGAIN so early and that gives them a double whammy of vaccines which can trigger demodex out if they're carrying the gene for it.

But then, it would be my way to be over-cautious and not go to a show for this duration.

Re: When to get first shots?

Demodex and Parvo are really not in the same room for me...I have dealt with both. One of those renders your home a danger zone for ANY other puppy or ill or unvaccinated dog for YEARS...that alone is scarier than Demodex, to me, or anyone looking to perhaps breed, or rescue dogs in the future. We'll have to agree to disagree on that.

We are also making some big assumptions about Momma even being current on her vaccines, to have any antibodies to pass along...do we know that for certain?

Raising pups is all about asessing risk...they are vulnerable as heck right now, IMO...to everything. I'd hope they'd have been wormed a couple of times right now as well. At the very least...buy some Parvaid and keep it on hand...just in case. Might also look into getting some FFP (FRESH FROZEN PLASMA) for your vet to spin down and administer to them.

Re: When to get first shots?

I picked up Nikon a few days before he was 8 weeks and he got the first shots that day.  The breeder had already done some deworming (can't remember what), and I also did a 5-day round of Panacur.  I think he had his second shots 4 weeks later.  I took him places but did not let other people hold him or set him on the ground at "dog" places.  Luckily no one else in my family has ever had dogs so I could take him to my parents and my grandparents to socialize.

I am like Gina in that my dogs are exposed to a lot, they bring home a lot, I've had sick/parasitic fosters in my home...so I have to weigh these risks against so many people telling me I'm over-vaccinating, over heartworm/flea/tick/parasite preventing, etc.  My breeder once had a puppy that someone was taking care of for her while she was away and it got sick.  It turned out to be parvo and she gave the puppy to the person caring for it (who wanted to treat the parvo).  It is a very nice dog out of a very nice breeding, but she takes the risk of parvo so seriously she gave the puppy away rather than bringing parvo onto her property.  Taking her puppy back would have meant no more dogs for a loooong time (she breeds, but she also has a training facility on her property and hosts our Schutzhund club on her land).  I quit volunteering at the animal shelter a month before we went to visit Nikon's litter for the first time, and even then I wore scrubs and crocs I had washed in bleach.

Re: When to get first shots?

The pups were wormed at 2 and 4 weeks old. I will take them for their shots at 8 weeks.

Dont have any shows planned for a while. Keeping all the other dogs away from the pups also from now on.

The vet said that the mom was UTD on vaccines, was on interceptor, and frontline.

Thanks guys for the info. Jsut want to make sure I do the right thing for these guys.

Gina, truly I understand exactly what you're saying.  It's one of those "If I had a crystal ball I'd KNOW what to do" kinda things.  It's one of the reasons why it's so difficult TO foster baby puppies!

Re: When to get first shots?

If you want to vaccinate the puppies at six weeks, please find a vet to come to your place. The vet's office is one of the very best (worst) places to pick up parvo.
