I don't think that my 8 Month old puppy is acting right

Eversince I got my miniature Schnauzer pup back in June, I have noticed that he is quite lethargic, I bought him a few toys but he won't play with them at all. He doesn't seem to eat right because he stays skinny regardless of the fact that he doesn't really do anything except lay around and sleep. I have wormed him twice within the time that I have had him, so I don't think that it is worms.....He will only play on occasion with me or my roomate's Miniature Pin., is there something that I can give him to help him gain weight and start acting like he should as a puppy???

He needs a full checkup at the Vet.  His possible eating issue is hard to advise because one person's definition of thin isn't the same as someone elses.  What food do you feed?  The lethargy would worry me, a lot.

Well his diet is mainly Purina puppy food, but I give him some canned food from time to time. yeah it is worrying me, I mean he really doesn't even act like a puppy at all, he should be fairly active like my buddies puppy, but he acts so droopy all of the time

Purina puppy food is primarily corn and unusable grains so he really isn't getting much out of it.  A higher quality food *might* help, but first I'm going to agree.  FULL vet workup.

Trust your instincts and have him checked.  Make sure they do a full blood panel.  A puppy that age should be driving you crazy!! LOL  I hope it's nothing serious and please keep us posted.

Purina isn't the best dog food but it's certainly not the worst.  I raised many dogs on it before I got educated on the benefits of better quality food.

Could you recommend a better quality dog food for him to me?  yeah, I will be sure to take him to a vet and ask for a full blood panel

I've been feeding Evo, which has no grains.  Blue Buffalo is another good brand of food.  Here's a link to compare some of the different foods.  The Nutrition section of this forum is also a great resource.  The better foods will cost you more but you feed less because the food is better utilized by the dog.  I am NOT one of the experts on nutrition here but we have some very knowledgeable folks who are very helpful.

The last I heard Evo wasn't recommended for puppies, but Innova (same company) is.

Fingers crossed that your pup's problem isn't serious.

See, I told you I'm no expert on nutrition!  LOL  I didn't mean to infer that I was recommending that for a pup that age, just saying what I feed.   Thanks, Janet.  Better not to get confusion started when it comes to dog food.  It's confusing enough to find the right one.

    PLEASE PLEASE -- VET ***FIRST***

Don't change foods and then vet -- VET FIRST.   This pup is not acting normally and it's NOT food.  This pup needs to go to the vet absolutely right away.  "lethargy" is probably the scariest symptom out there -- it can be many things.  Please -- go right away.

Absolutely agree with Callie.  VET FIRST.  Yes, I would strongly recommend changing foods, but AFTER the vet.

The last *I* heard EVO isn't recommended for large breed pups, but I don't keep current on all of that since I don't have (thankfully) any pups of any size!

I feed Blue Buffalo.....very similar to Innova but not as pricey.

    But, VET FIRST.

OK, one more time so no one thinks I was recommending the OP feed her pup Evo.  I mentioned that I feed it and that it was grain free.  I never meant to imply or suggest that the OP feed it.  I also suggested a Vet check first because I too don't think this is a food issue.  Maybe I'm being touchy but it seems that some are misreading what I posted.  Hope it's clear now.

The OP has already stated that the pup will be taken to the Vet for a full workup.

OP, don't feed your puppy Evo!  That should do it. LOL

LOL, Jackie!  It's confusing as heck knowing what to feed.  For years I thought that Purina was the cadilac of dog foods.  Many a vet recommended it.  When EVO was first introduced I was really excited about it, but, they changed their position so many times on pups/lg breed pups/yes/no/maybe so.........that I wasn't about to take their word on it one way or another.  EVO is a great food though.

Always follow your gut instinct. Lethargy is NEVER a good thing, at any age and very worrisome for a dogs whose age dictates that they should be driving you absolutely bonkers :)

I hope you have or will be taking your pup to the vet.  I hope everything is alright and I'll keep the little one in my thoughts!
