    Wow...what a morning! Dog park/Dog fight!

My friend and I took our dogs (I just took Apollo, she took her yellow Lab) to the park this morning. It's an official off leash dog park.  I seriously couldn't believe all the people there with small children (under 3 years old)! Not in strollers, but waddling around! One baby was in diapers barely able to walk (very wobbly) and he had a handful of crackers. So many dogs were swarming him! And the parents were laughing about how the dogs "loved" the baby.

We kept our dogs pretty far away from all the people, but seriously! Where's the common sense????

Then an old many comes in w/ 2 JRT's on flexi's. The dogs went NUTS at the sight of all the other dogs and raced until the flexi's were all the way out (about 15ft). Then the leashes got tangled and the dogs aggressed at each other. The 2 JRT's were so stressed. The guy has zero control over his dogs. My friend and I were just leaving when that guy was coming in and her Lab was still off leash. Well, her Lab went over to investigate the fighting/barking the 2 JRT's were doing and one grabbed my friend's Lab right by the muzzle and left several punctures. It happend *SO* quick, before she was able to recall him (and he does have a good recall). Her Lab did nothing back, just tried to get away. Thankfully, Apollo stays right with me (super velcro) and isn't interested in commotion.

So, we went to the vet and ($125 later) her dog is OK. They just cleaned out the wounds which weren't too deep and gave her some antibiotics. We didn't get the guys info....I really wish we did. She just wanted to leave and get her dog out of there (I don't blame her) and since we took 1 truck I couldn't go back.

I'm sorry your friend's dog had a bad experience.  I'm glad it wasn't a larger dog who could have caused even more damage.  I hope her dog doesn't come away from this with dog to dog aggression toward small dogs.

I also hate to sound like a broken record but all of the above post is why I will never take my dogs to a dog park or recommend them to anyone.

Wow.  What an ordeal.  It might not be a bad idea to put a notice in the paper and/or put up some flyers ... anyone who was at the park that day, witnessed the fight, knows the other dogs/owners, etc. Maybe that owner would have to reimburse her for the vet bill.  $125 isn't exactly pocket change.

I just hope the child is alright....

Sheesh, that whole ordeal sounded a bit scary. I hope I never see or have to deal with something similar!

    I think he'll be fine- he's a typical Lab; very social, happy-go-lucky.

I totally understand. Normally, we go to a state park and rarely run into anyone (which I like). But, my friend really wanted to go check this park out because she'd never been there...Confused...I don't think she's going back ever.

I've been to the dog park a few times to meet my friend and her dog, and I have never been impressed. Well, actually, once it was fine, when it was mid afternoon, mid winter, day after a snow storm, and we were the only ones there most of the time. When someone else came in, we left because the dogs he brought were nasty. I met her at one once with Luke, and he won't go back. He was fine, because he was far more concerned with the people than the dogs. A big pittie type was getting a little too aggressive with other dogs, and they were getting snappy. The dingbat owner thought he was Cesar, so he clearly was just making things worse. Luke will meet plenty of dogs elsewhere, and has no need to for this stuff. If they really got aggressive, he'd possibly be ripped up.

    Re: Wow...what a morning! Dog park/Dog fight!

Our city has a very nice, very big 'off leash' dog park. They are now building another one on the other side of town. I have only gone a few times because we live out in the country and we have a large fenced-in area for the dogs, and my daughter and I prefer to take them walking on the county trails.

Anyway, I have a friend who takes her two dogs to the dog park every single day.  She loves it.  I have to say that the few times I went I did enjoy it, but I was leary of some of the dogs.  Not all of them were comfortable.  I liked that they could get away from each other.  My dogs loved it there and have good recall, but I was still nervous about it.

One thing I didn't like was that even though the majority of the people picked up their dog's droppings, I noticed once that one of the dogs had really runny poop - almost watery, and of course, you can pick it up but any bug they have is still there.

I too was shocked at people who brought their toddlers there and let them run around.  My friend brought her 3 year old grand daughter one of the times and let her run, unattended, all over the place. There is no way I would do that.

I guess it's nice and the dogs sure do enjoy it, but I much prefer to take them on the trails and walk.

Dogs are proof...God not only loves us and wants us to be happy, but He also has a great sense of humor and likes to hear us laugh!!!
