    Re: Are You Prepared?

So do you know anything about the dog that attacked? Was its owner with him?   Did you talk to them if so?

Gosh...thats so scary.  But it made me think of the fact that it could be a stray that was in the woods or so....how would any of us ever know what is  out there when walking our dogs on hikes?

    Re: Are You Prepared?

I'm so glad Brinxx is ok!  How terrifying, I can't even imagine what it must have been like.  I'm so glad that your vet friend was close by!

Thanks for posting this, it's so easy to think you're safe if stuff is packed in the car, but when you're away from the car?  I'll be bringing the first aid kit WITH the dogs whenever we go out now.

Second attack I've read about this morning.  Oh my goodness....I am so glad Brinxx is ok.  Very scary.

How scary.  I'm glad Brinxx is going to be OK.  And yeah, you're absolutely right.  People keep first aid kits in a closet at home or in the trunk of the car ... not much good on a hike.

Oh my gosh, I am so glad to hear Brinxx is OK and so sorry this happened. A good reminder to all of us to carry our first aid supplies on our person.

OMG!  I'm so glad Brinxx is recovering, and I'm sending quick healing vibes her way...

We take our boys to the river on weekends whenever we can, and although there are never any other dogs around, there's always a possibility of them getting injured...I usually take a soft cooler with us and only stock water (for humans...the dogs drink from the river), extra tennis balls since sometimes they float down river before Harry can swim to retrieve them, and poop bags, but I'm for sure going to make sure there are first aid supplies in it as well!!

    Re: Are You Prepared?

Good reminder.  I'm guilty of leaving my first aid kit in the car as well.

What did your vet suggest for common supplies for such an injury?  Would a pressure bandage work?

I'm sorry that you experienced that, but I'm happy that Brinxx is going to be okay.

    Re: Are You Prepared?

Sorry that this is so long, but I'm trying to answer all questions in one post!

TysonSS, I have gauze sponges, both sterile & non sterile, triple antibiotic ointment, benadryl, alcohol, peroxide, syringes, ace bandage, elastikon, & zonas tapes, vet wrap, rolled cotton, rolled gauze, KY jelly, silvadene cream, string to make a muzzle if needed, bandage scissors, tweezers, hemostats, suture material, electrolyte mix, a 9mm pistol & a small blanket in our first aid kit.

Lori, I seriously doubt that I'll see any compensation from the other dog's owner. I got the "bill" today, & it appears that I'm on the hook for one homecooked dinner, two lunches, & Starbucks on Saturday morning. I'm not even sure how to present him a bill for something like that.

Callie, I made fun of Nancy when she brought out her backpack, because it was, imo, "just something else to have to carry." From now on, I think that I'll carry a backpack as well.

Dyan, we were hiking on an off leash trail. The dogs owner was with him. Our dogs were swimming in a creek when they walked up on us. Brinxx wasn't in the mood for a swim so she was hanging out on the bank with us. His dog charged, he yelled "watch out, he hates other dogs." Brinxx was about 5 foot from me when we saw him coming. I recalled her, & he grabbed her as she turned towards me. During the attack, the guy just stood there. He didn't try to help seperate the dogs. Our hiking group had 4 people & nine dogs, so the other 3 people were trying to restrain our dogs so that there wasn't a bigger problem. (Bevo, Brutus, & one of the other dogs were working very hard to join in the fight.) I tried to pull the other dog off Brinxx by his rear legs, but the dog wouldn't let go, & I was dragging Brinxx along too. Eventually, I decided to start kicking the dog in the ribs. By the time he finally released, he had some obviously fractured ribs. His owner was still just standing there with a stupid look on his face. I snapped one of my leashes on the dog & handed it back to the guy. Nancy did tell him that he needed to get his dog to a vet, as she was trying to get the bleeding stopped on Brinxx. I did get his name & number before he left, & I did file a police report once we got to the clinic.

Amber, I'm fairly certain that a pressure bandage would have worked as a quick fix until I could have gotten her to a vet.

I stopped by the clinic today to see her, & she was her normal happy, waggy self, although she was a little slower moving than normal. Tonight after work, I went to Nancy's house to see her again, & to drop off her "kid" (our youngest boy) so that she had a sleeping buddy for the night. Both he & Brinxx were thrilled to see each other, & I'm sure that they will both sleep better together.

    Re: Are You Prepared?

I LOL'ed that you have a 9mm pistol in your first aid kit, Amanda. Callie's purse is huge (I've seen it in ''real life'', LOL) but I'm pretty sure she's not packing heat! Just makes you more and more like the female Chuck Norris, in my mind.

I'm glad Brinxx is OK. She can be my favorite tonight, sorry Bevo.

    Re: Are You Prepared?

I live in Texas.  We all have guns!  The pistol used to ride in my purse, but I have to go through a metal detector to get into our office building.  It wasn't worth the hassle to have to show my concealed handgun license daily in order to pass through.

    Re: Are You Prepared?

Amanda, I'm so sorry this happened. Having just experienced this scary a** situation, it makes me think. I'm glad Brinnx is okay. Why would this guy have his dog off-leash if it hates other dogs?

I carry a pretty stocked first-aid kit in my CamelBak when we go mountain biking or have sar training, but not when we're just out on a walk. Maybe I should.
