My Good Deed of the Day

I was on my way home today from running a few errands and on a busy road about 5 minutes from my house I noticed two loose dogs. One looked like an American Pit Bull Mix and the other some kind of Spaniel Mix.  Happy dogs; sniffing up a storm and romping around.  They didn't look upset or scared at all.    But, again...on a busy road.  I noticed that they had tags on as I drove by.  I couldn't NOT stop.  But, I had to go up the road a bit to turn around and when I came back, I didn't see them right away.  I turned around again, and there they were across the street.  They had made their way across. Tongue Tied

I pulled into a little nook off the street fairly close to them; and got out.  I waited until there were no cars coming and called them to me.  They both did come across the street, but only one of them came close enough for me to reach his collar.  After I had him by the collar, he didn't want anything to do with me...poor thing.  The other got scared and kind of zig zagged around, but didn't leave the area...and thank goodness didn't cross the street either.

The tags were customized with owners name and phone number.  YAY!  I was so relieved.  I immediately called the number while trying to keep "Farley" calm and not slip away.  Of course, I got voicemail, grrr; but I left a message saying I had his dogs and left my number to call.  After I hung up, I realized I must have sounded like a kidnapper and was asking for a ransom or something.  "I have your dog"  "Call me"  LOL

So, the guy called me right back and I told him that I had Farley and he was with another white dog.  The guy confirmed the other dog is his too and his name is Willy.  Willy would not come close enough to me to get his collar.  The guy said that Willy is pretty much scared of everything.

Anyway, the guy says he is about 30 minutes away but he will come right now.  I told him I would try to get both of them in my Blazer and get them off the busy road.  He was very appreciative; thanked me and told me he would be there as fast as he could.  I thanked him for having tags on his two boys.  Smile

So, I'm down on my knees on the side of the road and Farley is laying down on the ground at this point, just trying to be a concrete weight.  I couldn't pick him up and he kept trying to wiggle out of my grip.  This very nice lady stopped and asked if I needed help.  I said yes please...if you could just help me lift him up into the Blazer.  She stopped because she thought I was dealing with a dog that had been hit.  That was what we looked like as she was approaching.

She helped me get Farley into the back of the Blazer and while I was holding him...she got some popcorn she had and was trying to lure Willy.  He wanted no part of that.  But, he also didn't want to leave Farley...so he kept his distance.  At that point we just didn't want him running off, so we just let him be.

The owner calls me back and says that his Mom lives close by and would be coming...she could get there faster than he could.  So, we wait.  Then Willy decided he wanted to run off.  Scared the living daylights out of us.  He ran one way, then we tried calling him back...he stopped and then went running the other way...about 4 houses down and then Willy disappeared into a hole in a fence.  All I could hope for is that is his house.  He didn't come back out so that was the assumption.

The nice lady had her young son in the car, so she asked if I would be ok at this point.  I thanked her immensly and said we would be ok.  I had a bottle of water and cut into the brand new bag of dog food I just bought.  Farley was fine.  Smile  He had food, he had water; and he was starting to accept me.  He even laid down in the blazer and got comfy.

The Mom arrived and was so extremely grateful and talked about how her DIL would be so completely devastated if something happened to her dogs.  I pointed out where Willy ran off to, and sure enough it was his house.  Willey went home.  She tried to give me $20.00.  LOL  I said that I couldn't take that...that I had 3 dogs of my own and if they got loose would just hope that someone would do the same thing.  She gave me a hug and I said...Oh yeah, I'll take a hug.

So, Farley and Willy are safe and sound; and their Daddy has a big hole in their fence to fix.

Whew, I'm exhausted.  But, boy I am so very glad that I turned around to save those boys.

What a great deed!  Thank goodness they had tags and double thank goodness that you saw them and were able to get them reunited with their family.  Big Smile

You absolutely rock, lady!!  Awesome idea to not traumatize Willy but to just keep him close.  Good job!!

Re: My Good Deed of the Day

It's so nice to hear stories with happy endings!  I had a similar experience this spring when I saw two dogs trotting on a relatively busy road on my way to work.  It's a dilemma -- you want to stop, but the fear is that the dogs may freak out when they're called or approached, which could cause them to run INTO the traffic, or further away (that's happened to us a couple times when we've tried to help loose dogs).  Luckily the dogs I found ran right to my car and hopped in.  Unfortunately, they didn't have legible tags, but I brought them to county dog control, and they found microchips with owner info.  They were picked up within a couple hours of my finding them.

I'm glad the dog you were able to handle was cooperative AND had a current tag.  The other refreshing parts of your story are that a good samaritan stopped to help (that seems less common these days), and that the owner (or the mother, I guess) expressed sincere appreciation.  We've had the experience of returning a dog, only to have the person seem completely disinterested, not relieved or thankful.  How wonderful that you had such a positive experience with everyone involved and the dogs are safe and sound!

Thanks guys...it did feel so good to rescue these boys and to know that their owners are good people who were genuinely worried about them.

Yes, they smelled my hands first thing...then when I opened up the Blazer to get the food, they sniffed up all the Farley scent they could.  Then looked at me like, Who dat?  Big Smile

Kudos Barbara!  Thank goodness for you...who knows what might have happened to those boys if you hadn't stopped.  They sure are lucky that you were driving by!  And finally, a story where the dogs not only had tags, but that the info on the tags was up to date.
