    Gundogsupply collar?

Hopefully this is not against any "rules" because I'm asking about a vendor other than dog.com, but I cannot find anything comparable offered by dog.com.  I would like to get leather collars that come with brass ID plates riveted on the collar.  This is to avoid tags falling off or getting ripped off which has happened to me a few times now (and nicely enough, someone called and left a voicemail telling me where to find my tags!).  I Googled "leather collar with name plate" and got GunDogSupply.com as the top hit.  They have lots of choices and they all come with the ID plate.  I'm inclined to just pick the cheapest one but I'm wondering if anyone has used these collars and recommends one style over another?  We will be on vacation so the dogs will be getting wet, dirty, hiking, and need to be leashed for walks so the collar will get a lot of use.

    Re: Gundogsupply collar?

I have bought a number of things from Gundog and really like their customer service. I have the duralon collars with nameplates, which I *adore*, my dogs are rough with them and the nametags are still secure. I'd like to have leather, but, with as much swimming as they do, I find the duralon more convenient for me. :)

What's duralon, is that a different material?

They have durasoft and duralon, which are essentially the same.  It's a plastic material, I have collars in a number of colors (they are all pretty much dayglo, as they are usually used for hunting dogs, so you'll see a lot of blaze orange) and that's pretty much all my dogs wear anymore, especially with as wet as they get, nearly every day! lol

Wow, those plastic ones are cheap! The leather ones sure are pretty, though...

I've used Gun Dog Supply for lots of stuff over the years, good company.  I've never ordered my collars from there but all my collars, leather and fabric, have brass name plates riveted on.  Most any place that sells the collars and the name plates will attach them for you.  I've also bought the namplates separately and you attach the nameplate yourself.   Easier on cloth that leather.  :)

I just bought a bunch o stuff  at gundogsupply.  They are a good company.  I also go to lioncountrysupply (www.lcsupply.com).  They have some really nice leather collars and leashes and you can have a name plate attached.  I usually get slide on name tags from Boomarang Tags because I can take them off of the old collars and put them on new ones.

    Re: Gundogsupply collar?

I use the plastic-coated nylon on all my herding dogs. They are best if your dogs are in the water a lot like mine. My favorite leather collar for working is two-ply, with a center ring (all my collars are center ring, easier for tying out).

I have friends who've gotten their collars at gundog. I also like Wholesale Kennel Supply - I actually shop there in person because a friend lives close to their brick and mortar store - their prices are good but they only have pretty blue and red plus blaze orange of course.

Bill Boatman also sells the collars with leather plates on them. He has the best combination, I feel, of choices and price. This is where used to get my two ply collars.

    Re: Gundogsupply collar?

I use Gun dog supply for quite a few things and the service is great - I ordered a Dokken duck on Saturday and it arrived yesterday Big Smile

I have a center ring biothene/durasoft type collar that B uses for swimming.  Great collar for wet activities!

as an alternative I have a collar like this and I use a Boomerang tag for it "Double Thick Nylon and Leather CollarTags™" and that fits tightly on there but is easily removed to go on one of his belt style nylon collars.

I really like the Boomerang tags and since B has a bunch of collars I like having the ability to move his tags around

We use the Collar tags for adjustable nylon collars and in all his insanity, playdates, wild antics etc have never lost a tag they all are like new

BTW I love that plain leather collar - I got it at a farm supply and we have hardly used anything else since.

I use embroidered collars, because they're lighter and don't snag coat. I'm scared of rivets.

    Re: Gundogsupply collar?

Now I can't decide!  They have so many.  I'd like to keep it under $10 per dog since I need three.  I'm drawn to the leather, but that plastic stuff could work, although I've always been told the leather is better for the GSD coats (longer, thick, lots of undercoat so maybe something that actually does absorb as it dries would be better than plastic/waterproof?)....

I think we are going with....

    Kenya's

    Coke's

    Nikon's

They also have the tie-out line I need (so Coke can be out on vacation) and the hardware snaps I need.
