  yellow labs and viszlas - need help with breeders! Reply Contact My sister in law is looking to get a puppy.  She has a large house with a fenced yard, and 2 children - a 3 year old boy and 6  year old girl.  She wants either a yellow lab or a viszla and is asking for my help.  My experience is with small breeds so I don't know much about large, working type breeds.  She is starting with breeders listed here http://www.thelabradorclub.com/subpages/breeder_search_results.php?cri=bystate  and http://www.vcnnj.com/.  Any advice? Reply Contact Angie Becker in Texas would be a good place to start with the Lab research.  She is dedicated to improving the breed and is interested in well rounded Labs that can compete in show and field. She is a very nice lady too.  Tell your SIL to email Angie and ask for info.  She will learn a lot and hopefully make an informed decision.

She should only get a vizsla if she can give it the exercise it needs. Not scolding, just sayin'. Starting with a breed club is a good idea. The blinking nav made me dizzy and the links didn't work for me. They should have a breeder referral program.

Reply Contact  Unless she REALLY wants a high energy sort of dog, I think her best bet would be to go with a Lab from show (aka English) lines. There is a big difference between the different types of Labs and IME the show bred ones tend to be the best suited to being family pets. IME Viszlas are a much more intense, active breed. They also seem to have a tendency towards being a bit "high strung" or nervous and quite prone to seperation problems.

Reply Contact jenns: I appreciate the info regarding the energy level and temperment of viszlas vs. labs.  How would weimeraners and german shorhair pointers compare?  Weims and GSP are much more like Viszlas than Labs - they are extremely high energy and tend to need a lot of early socialization.Out of the three (Weims, GSp & Viszla) I'd probably lean towards suggesting a GSP but I still think a show bred Lab would be most appropriate for an average pet home. Unless of course they really are set on having one of the other breeds, have been around them enough to know that is for sure what they want and are prepared to properly exercise, socialize and train a more "high octane" breed.
