    Sinder is weird.

Ok Sinder is an 10 week old Translvanian Hound/Vizsla mix I got 2 weeks ago. JJ was wanting to get another Vizsla because some how my "only one dog in the house is enough nd your(me) crazy to have/want 5 dogs" man has been abducted. He is in love with the Vizsla breed and Joker of course. Well Joker's breeder emailed me and told me she had an "opps" litter and wanted to know if I'd be interested in one. I told her we were looking for a pup for JJ and I would ask him if he wanted to get one of these pups instead of a purebreed. He said yes he wanted one. So that's how Sinder came to be here.

But Sinder hates Fynn and Joker. She dont mind the other dogs because they dont try to play with her. Joker and Fynn try to play with her and she backs up snapping at them. Fynn will leave her alone after a few snaps but poor Joker thinks everyone wants to play and be his friend. I have to tell him to leave it because he apparently cant get the message of snapping teeth. She's a great loving pup with us. Wants to snuggle and be petted all the time. Just wants to be with us but if the others come around she goes and hides under/behind stuff or does her snapping crap.

I emailed the breeder and told her what she was doing and she said she didnt know why she was being like that. She came out of a litter of 9 and there was her mom and Joker's parents there. When I emailed her to tell her what we was looking for in a pup I had said and outgoing, friendly, loves toys, initiates play with the other pups/dogs,independent to a point, etc. She's all that except hates the other dogs. Or doesnt want to be around them anyways.

Any ideas? If she cant handle or doesnt want to be around the other dogs she isnt gonna fit in here. Or be happy here. I dont want that. So we've been discussing giving her back to the breeder and letting her find her a more suitable home.

    Re: Sinder is weird.

Do you know what it is about Fynn and Joker that she doesn't like - is it their style of interaction, or is it that they are male, or what?

How long has this behaviour been going on for?

Does she only do it if they initiate contact, or does she also do it if they are just in the room with her?

What is she like with OTHER dogs that she meets when out walking, or at puppy class?  Does she have preferences there also?

Have you done anything to ease the relationship between them and help them get along (example: feeding both high value treats when in the same room, crating the boys so Sinder gets some freedom without harassment and gets used to them, as you might with a cat who hated a new puppy, rubbing an old towel over Joker and Fynn and putting it in Sinder's bed, or under under dinner dish before she eats, that kind of thing?)

Edit - you did say how old she was, I missed it!

1.Do you know what it is about Fynn and Joker that she doesn't like - is it their style of interaction, or is it that they are male, or what?

It might be that their male. I know the breeder said 6 of the pups in the litter were female.

Fynn lays down on the ground  or play bows and wags his tail as he tries to get someone to play with him. Then if that dont work he gets frustrated and barks. But I quickly tell him that's enough and he shuts up.

Joker is a little rough. He is a little mouthy but I can tell him leave it and he'll stop.

2.How long has this behavior been going on for?

    Since I got her.

3.Does she only do it if they initiate contact, or does she also do it if they are just in the room with her?

She snaps at them if they try to play with her.

If they are in the room with her she will hide somewhere.

4.What is she like with OTHER dogs that she meets when out walking, or at puppy class?  Does she have preferences there also?

She doesnt pay attention to other dogs. If they try to smell her he walks away to the nearest human(at class). On walks she just walks beside me or Samantha looking at us the whole time. It's like you tell her to "watch me."

Well the crate she's in is Joker's old crate. And it smells like Joker because there's a towel in it and I use that crate for Joker when we go to class once a week.

I do give her some alone time where the others are crated. But then she's usually asleep on the couch or playing in Samantha's room, where the others are not allowed!

Have you tried crating the dogs side by side, her in between the others? This worked for a friend of mine because the dogs could sniff each other and get used to being around each other without all the rough and tumble. I'm not sure if it will work for you but might be a thought. Could the breeder possibly do a trade with you if this pup doesn't work out?

    Re: Sinder is weird.

Hmmm... I am wondering if she is hiding because she anticipates rough interaction.... or if she would hide anyway even if both dogs were gentle.  Because you say Joker is mouthy, but you don't say that of Fynn, and she reacts the same to both dogs?

Whether you keep her or not, I think she needs something to convince her that males = good, so that fear problems don't develop later.  I wouldn't go out of the way to introduce her to lots of males, in case it backfired, but I would carry extra smelly treats around in super tiny pieces and just feed constantly whenever other males are around.  Do you feed kibble? If so, then at home you could hand feed her meals while Joker and/Fynn are in the room.  Better still JJ could do that, and you could hand feed the boys THEIR meal in return for simple obedience, for acting calmly around Sinder, for ignoring her and for paying attention to you?

I do think having the others crated in her presence would help - she would learn that they can be around and she doesn't HAVE to hide, or worry about being mouthed or whatever.

    Re: Sinder is weird.

Im not giving her up just yet. She has only been here 2 weeks. I've just never seen or had a pup that didnt like other dogs or want to play with other dogs. JJ doesnt want to give her up period but if she isnt happy here then it's not fair to keep her right?

I dont make her be around the boys. If she gets too upset I let her go in her crate, Samantha's room, or crate the boys if they're being too annoying.

I feed kibble one meal and frozen chicken quarters for one meal. Joker gets his kibble hand feed for return of commands performed since he has a sensitive belly and cant get too many treats. I will have JJ do the same with Sinder right next to us since she is very food motivated just like Joker.

I dont know if this matters or not. But when we are walking we do go past a house that has 3 outside dogs loose. They bark at us but dont leave the yard. She doesnt shy away or anything like that when we're walking by. She just stays walking beside me and Samantha looking at one of us.

How old is she and what age did she leave the breeder?  Could she have a hearing or sight problem?  Is it possible she was accidentally hurt by one of the big dogs or scared badly on her first encounter with them?  Does she shy away from puppies her age/size?

It is a bit odd - I mean you think, oh, all puppies want to play!  The only pups I have known that DIDN'T want to play much were poorly pups - so has she had a full vet check to rule that out?

I agree with you on that one.

    Re: Sinder is weird.

I got Sinder at 8 weeks old.

She has been vet checked healthy. Breeder's vet checked her and then I took her to my own vet also.

Joker and Fynn were in their crates when they met Sinder. Then I stuck Sinder in her crate and let the boys out one at a time. Fynn didnt pay any attention to her but Joker did go smell her. Lillie and Cheyanne met Sinder but they didnt do anything but sniff her and then go on their business.

She doesnt acknowledge other pups or dogs. She just wants to sit/stand by people. She loves cats though. She plays with Oscar like their best friends.

    Re: Sinder is weird.

I'd wonder if it's more of a fear response towards their outgoing nature, rather than "not liking them"?  It seems she's ok with the dogs who are more or less indifferent to her.

Perhaps doing some "group" exercises where everyone is doing calm sits and downs and getting lots of treats will help. Thus she'd be around the boys, but their attention wouldn't be on her

I was thinking something along these lines as well. Sinder sounds like a very nervous, unconfident pup - I would work on cofidence building with her first.
