DOGS OFF LEASH ~ IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS ~ UGH!!

Tonight while I was walking the girls we had stopped to meet a little girl and her dad..... I spotted two girls in their early twenties around the side of the lake (not very near us) with three small dogs off leash. Two Chihuaha's and a Yorkie. As we finished our conversation with the little girl and her dad, they started walking toward the pool, I had my back to the area where the girls and their dogs were. All of a sudden we hear this crazy, high pitched barking and I turned around to see all three dogs running full force around the lake straight toward my dogs and me!!!!! Well, my hackles went up...... my dogs are just standing there like, "What the hell????" But I could tell they weren't sure what to expect and neither was I. I braced myself and was ready to do whatever I had to do to protect my dogs and myself. I stepped in front of my dogs and held my breath.

The girls were yelling to me, "It's okay, they're fine!" I yelled back at them to put their damn dogs on leashes, it's the law and it's NOT okay!!! Then I felt like an as*, but I had to say something!! I seriously thought these dogs were going to do some damage and would have kicked their asses into the lake..... I hate to say it because I love animals so much, but it would have been in sheer defense of the three of us.

Well, the dogs came within about 10 feet of us, stopped for a few seconds and turned around..... I was staring them down pretty heavily and my posture was that I meant business. I was furious!! This is not the first time it's happened (this is at the property next door where I'm scheduled to move at the end of the month). There's a guy who lives on the first floor who routinely leaves his screen door open and the sliding door open and he lets his Yorkie run out whenever it wants to and the same thing happens whenever we walk by. My dogs are so friendly, I wouldn't say that they ever act truly afraid, but it startles the crap out of all of us and sort of ruins our pleasant walk for a few moments, not to mention getting the heart racing and the blood pressure going through the roof!!!! The next time it happens with this guy I'm not going to be nice about it. I've met some really nice people on our walks over there, some with pets and some without. I just think these people are ignorant and asking for trouble. If it happens again I'm going to contact the property manager who I know.

There is a leash law in Sarasota and, while I would love to be able to walk my dogs off leash all the time, I know that if I want to do that around here, I have to take them to the park. I don't want my dogs running off and getting hit by a car or a gator coming up out of the lake and getting them ( a very real possibility especially now during mating season) - I'm not worried about my dogs attacking anyone (and clearly these people feel the same way about their dogs) BUT, as we all know, dogs don't always like other dogs and will react for no apparent reason *to us.*

Thanks for letting me vent..... I'm just so tired of it happening and am amazed how stupid some people really are! UGH!!

I've had dogs who were perfectly friendly, and didn't understand why they couldn't say hi to every dog they passed, and others who, if a dog came running up to them, I swear I would have punted it, if possible, for it's own safety. Just because your dog is friendly, does not mean mine is. These idiots need to have a go at walking a dog aggressive dog once to see what it's like to have to fight off "friendly dogs." I get nervous about people allowing their dogs to even approach my friendly dogs without asking me.

Vent away! I hate when people keep thier dogs off leash. I mean, if it's an "off leash area" then I think it's great! But if your in public and there is no sign that says "off leash area" then they need to keep thier flippin dogs ON THE LEASH!

Max and I went to my cousins T-ball game yesterday, and this guy had his little doxie, somthin mixed with somthin mutt there. A very sweet little girl, but she had no leash and no collar! and she kept taking off and running into the middle of the game! I finally got fed up and and brought it to the attention of the wife and she said something to the effect of "oh yeah, thats my husbands dog. I told him she needed a leash but he didn't listen" I asked if she ever wore a collar and she goes "of yeah, but my kids took it off last night I don't know why" I left it at that I wasn't to yell, I wanted to scream but I didn't. to many people, to many witnessess.

The lady did say she was fixed, and she listens well, but we were RIGHT BY THE ROAD idoit people don't get it!

I carry Direct Stop every time I go out with her no matter where I am.  If a dog approaches us off leash, I give it one verbal warning to back up.  If it keeps coming at us I spray in their direction.  I don't spray it right at them but if I needed to I would.

I just will not stand there and be intimidated and/or watch my dog be attacked while she's on a leash anymore.  I really don't care if the owners get upset.

I work with a kid whose family takes the collar off their dog, supposedly just at night, but usually when I go there, it's off because the other kid does it, leaves it laying around, and forgets where it is to put it back on. I don't care that the dog is only going out in the back yard. That doesn't mean she can't slip out the front when I come or go, or out the garage when they go out to mow the lawn, or if I take the other kid out to ride his bike. She has slipped out before. I've taken dogs to the police station and spca before because they lacked adequate id, and I didn't know who they belonged to.

    Leash $15

    Collar $10

Not getting sprayed, kicked, hit by a car, or ripped up by another dog - priceless

This is what happened to us, and we nearly didn't get our dog back!  DH is much better now and DOES NOT take the dog's collars off unless they are having abath.

I can't bear it when DH lets his dog run up to other people and dogs either.  I HATE it.  I cringe.  I stand there thinking, "great, now WE are the irresponsible ones!"  If it was up to me, that dog would not be loose in that situation because I know her recall is not proofed that far.... because he has let her practise the undesirable behaviour far too many times.  It really makes me mad, much madder than when total strangers do it!

I'm right there with you!  So much so that I wrote a letter to the editor that made it in the paper last week.  Stick out tongue  I'm so flipping sick of running into off-leash dogs on our walks!  It's ridiculous -- and I'm also really tired of hearing, "Oh, don't worry, he's friendly" from the owners of said dogs.  I don't CARE if the dog is friendly, my dogs do not appreciate being accosted by an unfamiliar dog while they are on leash and unable to do anything about the situation.  These off leash dogs generally have awful social manners and are "aggressively friendly."  This totally puts my dogs on edge and often my (on leash) dogs are the first to snarl, which makes me the bad owner with aggressive dogs.

    I'm so sick of it.

Similar things happened to us where we just moved from -- once was with an unfixed male golden, who seemed friendly, but a little 7-9 yr old boy had "control" of the off leash dog and it ran at us, so DH moved up and yelled at it and Sammy gets a bit aggressive with intact males when they *aren't* charging at him so he's snarly.... thankfully the dad came at a run to grab his dog. He was like, oh he's friendly -- and I replied that mine isn't when he's charged by a dog off-leash (as he could see!). But it meant I couldn't leave our apt if they were out which wasn't cool. Second time was with a boxer-pittie mix, female, seemed friendly, the guy yelling at the dog to "come" when she took off which obviously didn't work.... i called out to him that mine doesn't handle being approached by a loose dog very well but he didn't seem to care until sammy lunged and snarled at the dog! Sammy probably would be OK with either of these dogs if they were all off-leash but he shouldn't have to worry about it and neither should I! Sammy really is all bark and no bite, but that doesn't mean I want him in these situations.... if one of those dogs got hurt you bet they would be mad at US when Sam was on a leash! So I certainly understand your frustration... but imagine how much worse it is if your dog is a little unpredictable in those situations. Thankfully we moved this weekend into our own house so we finally got away from those goobers :)

I went to a beach last year that has specific times when dogs can be there, and they have to be on leash at all times. When we got there there was a man with two off-leash Goldens (who I believe were intact), then a man with two off-leash  intact male RRs comes up -- and his dogs were obviously acting aggressively and annoying the other dogs, and then a man with two intact off-leash Boxers showed up! I decided that I did not need to be in the middle of that mess and we left. While the Goldens did approach Misha, and he was fine with it, I don't know how he'll behave if a dog is being actively aggressive towards him. And since if Misha were off leash, he'd be the big lug running at your dogs to say hi... I completely understand.

I'm with you...my hackles go way up and my stance gets quite rigid and the look on my face is hard and serious.  I absolutely have no tolerance for people who allow their dogs to run loose.  I have been known to offer a few choice words too; when these loose dogs charge me and my dogs and get into our personal space.

I've been in situations where a female dog charged us with teeth showing; and in situations where dogs have walked up non-chalantly and bit Buddy.  Livid.

    Vent away...we understand completely.

Re: DOGS OFF LEASH ~ IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS ~ UGH!!

This is an issue that comes up time and time again in my city.  It's extremely frustrating.  I hate when I'm walking my three dogs onlead at a heel and some yahoo has his/her dog offleash.  Of course it comes charging at us and they yell he's friendly.  Well one of my dogs was attacked by one of these "friendly" dogs and since is aggressive with strange dogs especially offlead.   So because of this attack he's scarred with this experience, and I look like a bad guy since my Black/white Male Malamute starts growling and barking when strange loose dogs approach.  I redirect his aggression with positive training, which works since he's extremely food oriented.  But I'm so sick of these as&^$#@'s not taking responsibility for their dogs.

Just the other night on a hour walk I had two experiences with offlead dogs.  One I flipped out at the dog running at us from across the park yelling at it and putting myself between it and my dogs. The owner did nothing at the other end of the park.

And the other experience was with a charging Husky who was with a group of 4 people.  I yelled at the dog and the owners to get there bloody dog onlead. And the owner was like "oh he's just a pup", as if to say its okay. The dog was about 100lbs so I have no clue how it could be a pup.  And it was a siberian who in my experience no matter the amount of training should not be left off lead for fear of it running and possibly being hit by a car.  I have a 5yo spayed female Siberian Husky, 2yo Neutered Male Alaskan Malamute & 16 week old Male Siberian Husky puppy who again were all walking onlead at a heel so i don't see how he couldnt control his "pup" while i could control 3 dogs including a pup.  Bah. I'm going to carry an airhorn from now on.   I'm dead sick of all these idiots.

Welcome to the world of the average service dog user.

I always carry pepper spray (among other things) for a deterrent against uncontrolled dogs (and their "owners") whenever my wife and I are out with her Guide. I have used it before and will not hesitate to use it again. I make no apologies and offer no explainations for protecting my wife and her "eyes". In all cases where I have had to use the spray, the other party has been ticketed or (in one case) arrested, and my wife has stayed safe. I do get a bit nervous when she is out and about without me, but so far there has only been one incident happen while I was not with her, and she handled it well. A good offense is the best defense when it comes to uncontrolled dogs.

Re: DOGS OFF LEASH ~ IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS ~ UGH!!

I always walk my dogs offlead,i make sure to stay away from roads. However,my dogs usually stay within a 10-20 feet radius of me unless they are having a sprinting/playing race with eachother which only happens for the first 5ish minutes of our walk,or lag way behind when there are just too many good smells to sniff! They never run up to other dogs, ever, they just have no interest for some reason.

So not everyone who walks their dogs off lead is a selfish idiot with uncontrollable dogs. The very reason i am able to walk them off lead is because they are trained and well behaved and dont bother other people. The least i can do for their impeccable manners is give them the freedom they deserve.I can not imagine walking them on lead in a large park with so much room for them to run and play.

I just think it's extremely sad that so many dog owners don't give a hoot about their dogs behaviour around others :( Touch wood...I havnt had any bad experiences with other off lead dogs. It's just extremely frustrating that a handful of irresponsible dog owners give the rest of us a bad name!!
