How much have you spent on a "free" dog?

I love (sarcastic) when people are offering "free" puppies or dogs. How much were your "free" dogs?

Kaydee was free and i think her total since her accident was 250$ and some change... but half of that was for an EVet and Xrays which cost more when you show up after 9pm....

we had a dobie mix puppy that was poisoned - the vet thought he might have chewed up an old battery because his symptoms were that of a dog poisoned by heavt metals - i think his bill was $600... the sickening and sad thing about THAT dog was after all the treatments, shots, muscle relaxers, special diet... he recovered fully then died two months later from PARVO!! of ALL the treatments he got from the vet... some how we missed the parvo shot.... i was only 14 at the time, my mom handled the vet bills and what not... i guess i assumed the also handled puppy vacs... no.

I'm sorry to hear about your pup. [:(]

One simple trip to the vet here in NYC is $500 or more. Multiply that by four or five (Pepper has a tummy issue, so we're at the vet more than just for check ups) and it adds up! Once, our vet bill was $1400 for one tummy problem! Plus everything here is so much more expensive. I have been figuring out that my "free dogs" are equal to a downpayment on a house! LOL! The yearly vet bill for the two dogs here costs me like $3500, easily. Grooming is about $500 a year too. The dog sitter for vacation is about $1000 a year. I never think of it as adding up to this much, because it goes out in small portions.

Lets see here, my "free" Raja has costed me over $1500 in less then a year, and those are just medical bills, not including the extensive trainining she needed!

Well, Cuddles is 8 and her total bills so far are probably up around $20,000+. Her monthly bill for her Addison's is $150 with blood work every 3 months for $250 on top of that.

Since Chopper is my first dog, several hundred in supplies (a German Shepherd sized crate and large or XL supplies are not cheap!) and also $1910 in additional housing payments (had to find a house that would accept dogs, so a $625 deposit, $300 pet deposit, and 2.5 months overlapping rent for $985 b/c our apartment lease is good through Sept. 23).

My DH found Sasha in downtown Jersey City with a shattered front leg... $2300 for the surgery, about $250 for vaccinations and another $125 for spaying, having a happy, healthy dog, priceless [:D]

RE: How much have you spent on a "free" dog?

Compared to some of the vet bills posted here we were quite lucky with our 12 week old stray free puppy. At seven and a half her total vet bills have been about $2,000 including an e-vet surgery to remove a fox tail in the nose and a surgery on her paw last year.

We however, had a very big learning curve. Neither of us had ever thought about getting a puppy. When we were growing up, puppies were put outside most of the time and gradually learned housetraining and manners. That combined with a puppy that truly loved to destroy things cost us thousands of dollars. Oh well it was just stuff.

Boomer is two and we're working on $3000. Wylie has been here since January and it's about the same. Both were homeless with injuries.

OTOH, Shy was free too and after 12 years it's just getting close to $3000. She was from a free to good home ad.

RE: How much have you spent on a "free" dog?

My free dogs weren't too bad, but that "free" horse I won in a raffle? Let's just say that the whole "never look a gift horse in the mouth" saying is a CROCK!

Astra tore her eyelid the first week I got her. $250

The vet did such a crummy job fixing it that I had to send her to the University to get it fixed right. $750

Tore up her knees coming out of anathesia at the university $200

Then she was also a psycho (orphaned and imprinted on people too much) so I had to send her to a trainer and board her. $300/month for a year

At the trainers, she managed to pick up every nail in the field. 6 mares in that field but only mine would step on them. I think she had magnetic hooves. $125/pop for vet to treat abscesses & twice daily trips for 5 days to the barn to soak hoof.

Hormonal problems that had the pricetag of a $200 bottle of Regu-Mate to keep her from tearing down another $300 in four-board fencing to get to the geldings. (What did she think she was going to do with a gelding?!)

In the end, sold her for less than $1000 and leased my sister's horse. After the "free" maladjusted Arab mare, the off-the-track thoroughbred mare was tame in comparison.

What kind of dog is raja? how much does she way, and was her tail cut? Sorry for all the questions but she looks a lot like my [linkhttp://www.geocities.com/hosselblotta/dog_pics/7-12-06a.JPG]Bullet[/link], who I was told is a mix of border collie and blue healer (his mom was for sure) But at 85 pounds, there's more to him than that. Just curious.

Bullet was not a "free" dog. In fact, the only thing free about him was the treatment the shelter gave him after we adopted him. He had kennel cough when we brought him home and once we realized it, the shelter was happy to treat him for free. Since then however, he's had 2 other illnesses, ate a cactus, had an operation to remove a grass seed from his jaw, and had a sore paw. Not even two years old yet.

Max - from a rescue site - was to have come with an adoption fee (I would have pd it and not considered it "buying") but since I was traveling over 8 hours one way to pick him up, during a hurricane alert too, they gave him to me - so 8 hours driving (gas for the truck), one night room in a hotel (try getting one during storm alert) $195, get home 1st vet visit (vet hated him, designer dog, till he found out I was rescueing then he loved him) $205, less than 1 week later severe tummy issues - xrays & testing (soft matter blockage, was a pr of socks from previous home) learn of hip problem $450, ongoing xrays & exams for hips Labor Day will be 2 yrs around $1300 - for the love of a good dog no charge
