and i just bought a 30 lb bag of TOTW:pacific Huh? I was originally feeding eagle pack but decided to switch because of some poop problems. Obviously, I'm missing a few things but what's so bad about Diamond?

Re: Taste of the Wild...a Diamond product

Wasn't it a Diamond recall about 4 years ago because of moldy corn as well?  And it was "just one state" then "just a few states" not the Chicken Soup line, then, yeah, the Chicken Soup line, and ended up being pretty much nationwide by the time all was said and done.

To me, yeah, it's not a huge big deal for a company to have a problem.  To me, how that problem is handled is huge.  Barely anyone even KNEW about the Nutro products recall earlier in the year, and that's pretty scarey to me.

So avoid corn then.  Its common for aflatoxins to be found in the ingredient, even in human standards---problem is you never really hear about it.  At least from that experience Diamond manufacturing facilities completely renovated their QC, so if anything it's probably better than some of the competition.  Don't forget that during the most recent gluten recall, there were 2 companies that didn't even recall their food when they were effected...they weren't even required to (so all the companies that did come forth were admirable--this was later found to be a Purina line and Nutro).  Not to mention Diamond wasn't even involved in that recent recall, but practically 90% of other brands were.

The aflatoxin took place in late 2005, early 2006. Poor testing and record keeping was the culprit. Diamond did a total recall nationwide, but only 21 states were actually affected by the actual tainted food, also Diamond settled the class action lawsuit for that case.

Glenda, what Nutro recall are you talking about?

Seems to that at ls one fthe top brand ompanies changedit's formula, but did not change the ingredient list on the bags. so folks did not know their dogs were getting ingredients they did not want their dogs to have, or in some cases were allergic to.    and another top one was found to have very sharp fish bone shards.

I debate over the diamond issue before switching to Taste of the Wild, but decided they were probably one of the more careful companies these days.   And besides, by the time I decided to switch, a few of the socalled top of the line companies had been exposed for different things. My Honey loves the high prairie.

yeah, at the moment the only company I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot-pole is Merrick. Unlike the companies lied to about the melamine- it's hard to really blame those companies about THAT- and Diamond's one lethal mistake with corn, Merrick has over the years racked up all sorts of "kill your dog" quality control issues and hasn't done a thing about them or expressed any sort of concern. Everything from shards of plastic in cans to contaminated treats. They make a lot of stuff that looks really good ingredient-wise. They make Before Grain, for example. Wouldn't touch it if you paid me.

Re: Taste of the Wild...a Diamond product

I WAS avoiding corn.  We had just moved up here and I was using Chicken Soup, since I couldn't find Innova.  Thought since CS didn't have corn we might be ok, but nope, that got recalled as well.

Maybe 6 months ago the Nutro "family" recalled a number of their lower priced products, including Pedigree due to samonella.  If I remember correctly, it was in the PA plant.  The parent company for Nutro owns everything from that awful Doggie Bag food all the way up to the Nutro Ultra.

Again, this was not intended as a thread to bash Diamond.  However, I am entitled to my personal opinion about a company and I am allowed to share that opinion so long as I'm not spreading false information.

We're back using Diamond Naturals also; its a great price, our girls enjoy eating it and no stomach upsets.  i vowed I'd never feed another Diamond product but I really think they are checking their foods very carefully now.  We did eagle pack, too and ours were losing interest plus that price!

    glenmar:

See, I'm funny I guess about the companies I'm willing to put my faith in.  Diamond, Nutro and Merrick have all "proven" to me that QC isn't at the top of their list, and I just flat am not willing to risk my dogs lives to those companies.  Much the same as I will not use any vaccines from Fort Dodge, or any meds for MYSELF made by them.

You may want to add Nautra products to your list. There was a aflatoxin problem with them about 9 - 10 years ago and it seemed in their case, they tried to keep it fairly queit.

I wasn't aware that any of the Natura products used corn, but then, I only used Innova, and haven't been able to afford THAT for quite some time!

Aflatoxin can affect any grain.  Corn is just the most sensitive.

just popping in to say that I got notification that Orjen is going even higher Indifferent At some point I think it just gets too absurd and i think I'm there.  So now having found the food I thought would always be part of his diet I am back to looking around. I was going to try TOTW fish formula but am wary now.

Becca I sure hope this cow thing comes through cuz da boy be on real food at that price!

Me too.  The natives are getting restless.  Poor other!Karen hasn't gotten back in touch - I hope she's okay.  I'm sure nothing's been done with the cattle - I'm assuming if she's too upset to answer e-mail that she's not going to go to the trouble of euth and disposal!  I'll be down there next week if nothing else.
