this sounds very much like anal gland leaking. Maybe because they are really full, or maybe for another reason.
A firm stool will usually empty the anal glands without intervention. Some dogs tho, regardless of the stool just have issues. My cockers did.
Pumpkin is good for either end of the spectrum, too runny or too firm. The fermentible fiber in pumpkin helps to draw the right about of liquid into the digestive tract. I use it only as absolutely needed. I'm not sure they can become "immune" to it, but I'm not taking any chances. It's a godsend when I need it.
If you don't know positively how to express anal glands, I wouldn't suggest trying it. Your vet can show you how to properly express them should the need arise again. It's not quite AS gross if you do it during bath time.
