    Re: AIHA or IMHA

So this morning we received the call from the vet. His PCV went down to 12. And this decrease was faster than previous days. The vet said the odds were stacked against him. He was a shadow of his former self, and in our hearts, it was the right thing to let him go, no matter how hard it was for us.

We will never forget our little Rocco. He is in a better place now where there is no pain, drugs, or needles. I will always miss him.

Thank you for your support over the last while everyone, and I will pray that your stories will have happy endings.

    Mingtea,

I am so sorry to hear of Rocco's passing. You made such a brave decision. Perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can give our beloved pets is a peaceful passing. Frisby and I send our love and hugs.

Rocco -- at the bottom of Rainbow Bridge there is prolly a little black pom/peke mix named Prissy there waiting for you and a Mostlie Sheltie named Foxy.  Foxy was Billy's bestest friend ever and, Prissy?  Well, she's just in on *everything* she thinks is important (and a buddy of ours would be part of "everything").  They'll show you around and show you the little pekehole where all the dogs get to check on their family that they left on earth.  Prissy will also show you where all the *best* little spots of sunshine are!

Mingtea -- my heart just breaks for you.  You did all the best things for Rocco and the choices this disease creates for us are so very very hard.  But given that he just wasn't responding at all -- and his crashes were so fast  -- I'm sure the vet made the best call possible.

Our hearts are with you ...

Thanks guys, your words of support and kindness mean a lot to me. Rocco will also get to meet my husband family's wonderful dog Max (American Eskimo), of whom he and his family always thought Rocco reminded them. We will miss Rocco terribly, and it was so so hard to put his things away. We hadn't put away anything up until now, fearing that it was a bad omen. He was our very first dog, and we couldn't have been blessed with a more wonderful dog than him. He loved kids and unlike some Pomeranians, he never was hostile or growled at anyone. We'll miss his happy and loving nature and him greeting us at the door so much. He has always been in this house since we bought it 2 years ago, and it doesn't feel the same without him.

    Re: AIHA or IMHA

Just reading over this message board again. Other things that I wanted to mention for other dog owners with this disease, is that Rocco had had 4 transfusions since last Tuesday night (therefore almost one a day). This was due to the rapid depletion of his red blood cells, the drugs not working to suppress his immune system enough, and the severity of his disease. He was also vomiting a lot this morning again, and refused to eat. They were going to have to use the gastro tube by tomorrow to ensure he had enough nutrients to survive.

Our time with him was short, but we are so happy to have had him in our lives and that we gave him all the love he could ever ask for.

I'm so sorry for your loss.  We instantly fall in love with them and are so fortunate to have them in our lives, even for a short time.  I've lost one at almost 17 years old and also one that was only 1 and no matter the length of time they are loved just as much.  Know that you did all you could for him and remember all the joy that he brought into your lives.  This is a horrible disease and comes on so quickly.  Thinking of you.

I so appreciate mingtea mentioning this -- when the packed cell volume (PCV) or hematacrit gets super low they feel nauseus (even more than just from the meds) -- which is one of the reasons so many of us repeat over and over that if your dog isn't holding food down or refuses to eat it is honestly an "emergency" worthy of the vet **now** since it can indicate really severe trauma and really low blood count.

She had Rocco at a SUPERB facility -- he truly had the best of care.  *sigh* It's always so difficult to lose them so young ... and we hate hearing of yet another loss.  But I'm so glad we got to know mingtea and Rocco just a bit.  Our thots and prayers are with them as they grieve.

    Re: AIHA or IMHA

Hello again, everyone. Daisy has been doing quite well. Apart from no longer jumping up on the bed, she's almost back to her old self (with a PVC count of 34, last check, 3 weeks ago). Except that last night the diarrhea came back and just now I found some blood -- a spot about the size of a quarter -- in it. I've spoken to the vet and they told me to keep an eye on her. She goes in tomorrow for a blood draw and check and if anything gets worse between now and then, we'll take her in. Of course, in the meantime, I'm concerned. She still has a decent appetite and is drinking, her color is good and she isn't panting, but she seems slightly less active than yesterday. Any ideas about what might be causing this? She takes: 1 20mg Predinsone pill daily, 1/2 (or 25mg) Azathioprine every other day, 10mg aspirin and imodium for the diarrhea, which has not done a thing. Thanks in advance, Maiz ETA: so sorry to post this without reading above. My sincere condolences on the loss of Rocco.

Mingtea....I'm so sorry to hear of you losing Rocco.  Like Callie was saying he has lots of friends at the bridge with him.  This is a hard disease to deal with especially when you have to deal with the loss of a loved pet.  Hang a windchime in your yard somewhere and everytime you hear it ring that's Rocco kicking up the wind on the other side.

    Deepest sympathies,

    Johnny & Tessy

Maiz, have you tried canned pure pumpkin for the diarrhea?  Works wonders for my dog Tessy.

    Hi everyone,

I haven't been here for a while, and now I'm so far behind.  I'm sorry to hear of your loss of Rocko.  It sounds like he simply was not responding well to the treatments.  I hope that you and your husband have peace knowing that you did the right thing.  Our prayers are with you.

For those of you who are new - welcome.  This forum is a tremendous resource.

Jazz update:  Jazz goes in for more bloods tests this week.  We are in the process of reducing the steroids, but my sense is that it's not going that well.  She was at 40mg. and we are reducing it by 5 mg a week.  She began to refuse her homemade diet two weeks ago, so she now only eats the kibble.  Her stools have been runny.  This morning she didn't get up to great me for twenty minutes (pre-IMH she waited upstairs at the door - Post IMH she waited at the bottom of the stairs).  She just laid in the family room.  My husband and I have been talking a lot about her quality of life.  She did so well initially and her rbc went to normal so we were optimistic.  Lately she lays down the majority of the day and looks like she is just not feeling well.  We have to wean her off the meds and pray that her body is able to adjust as we simply can't afford to keep this up.   I know that we are doing our best, but this is really hard and frustrating.

    Amsten

    Re: AIHA or IMHA

New person here, 2nd bout w/ this disease.

A week and a half ago my 10 year old Shih Tzu has been diagnosed with IMHA.  This is her second bout with this horrible disease.  In June of 2006 she was diagnosed with IMHA after exhibiting lethargic behavior, and having seizures.

At first the vet thought she had epilepsy and treated her for that, she had blood drawn and the next day the vet called and reported that her PCV something I had never heard of before was low.  The first time with this disease is terrifying.  They throw so many variables at you.  The seizures could be caused by Epilepsy, Organ Failure, or a Brain Tumor or the "C" word that nobody ever wants to hear.  IMHA was something I had never heard of before.  I had an awesome vet and after looking at her bloodwork,  explained to me that my little girl had IMHA.  I was told that this disease had a high death rate, and that the treatment was expensive,  I was told the treatment that they had was new and that nobody knew what brought it on, I learned the word "idiopathic" that day.  She was prescribed Predisone and Carafate.  A few days later, no response, and was Imuran was added, her PCV kept falling, my days and nights were blurred, seizures, holding her up just to use the bathroom, rush to emergency, blood taken, new PCV levels, always dropping.. on June 8th, my furbaby was admitted into ICU and hospitalized for a PCV of 8.  She was undergoing a blood transfusion the same day as my teenage son was graduating from high school.  I would have to say, that was pretty traumatic.  I love my girl like a kid, I have had her for 10 years.  The blood transfusion went well.  She was released to me the next morning and stayed on her medications, (Pred, Carafate, Imuran) and sent home.  Over a period of a month and a half, her PCV stablized and began to increase.  Over the next year, the medications were decreased, then eventually weaned off.

Two weeks ago today, she got into the garbage, and I thought .. oh she might get pancreatitis so I kept an eye on her. I felt her tummy, no swelling, no vomiting.  I went out to dinner with my hubby and when we got home we parked our VW van in front of our house.  The dogs have learned the noise of the bus pulling up and always greet us, barking and running to the door. We walked into the house and found her on her side, laying down, which was unusual.  I immediately picked her up and she was unresponsive, her tongue was hanging out the side of her mouth, she was pale white and wouldn't respond to me.  I freaked out, I thought she was dead, I began to rub her chest area and we rushed her to the local emergency hospital here.  The vet took her back right away, and said "wow we seem to be running a special on IMHA" it was the 4th case she had seen that day.  It's summer here, and the fleas have been horrible.

They took her blood, and admitted her to the ICU, Her bloodwork came back, PCV was 28.  Not enough to make her have a seizure, she said her blood had a "high fat content".  we picked her up the next morning at 7am, and took her to her regular vet. I explained what had happened the night before and told her that Mopsy had a history of *IMHA".  She checked her PCV, it had dropped again, to 24, within 24 hours, it had dropped 4, sent her home with Predisone, Imuran and a antibiotic, which she later kept vomiting and was eliminated and an appointment in 48 hours.  Next vet appointment she had a CBC to determine if her bone marrow was making red blood cells to check her regenerative state.  Good news is, regenerating well, bad news is, immune system is gobbling, but not at the bone marrow level.  Her PCV was 20. Ugh.  Labor Day weekend, that means I only have emergency care available.

When my furbaby is sick, I am sick, I try to keep myself happy for her.  So she wants to get better. Labor Day weekend felt like an eternity.  Medications around the clock.  30 mg, Pred, 2 times a day, 1/4 Imuran twice a day, anti acid, and siezure medications.  At the end of the holiday weekend, on Tuesday, I brought her in, her PCV was 16.  The vet added Cyclosporin.  Recheck in two days.  We bought it at Costco, it was $78.00.

Next appointment was Thursday.  Her PCV was up to 28 !  I know that it might drop, she is still on the full medication schedule, which consists of:

Prednisone :  15 mg.  2 x day, Imuran 50 mg., 1/4 tab everyday, Cyclosporin, 75mg, 2 x day, and anti acid as well as a small dose of aspirin.

    Her next appointment is tomorrow.

The medication is so icky, I know my girl feels horrible.  She wants to eat, drink.  I give her icecubes, which were a big hit last week, but now have lost their luster.  I give her liver treats, and feed her canned food (which is a treat) to keep her stomach with food.  She can walk and go out for potty breaks, I check everything, my neighbors think I'm whacky, chasing my doggie around with a tissue, inspecting her urine, and more.  I just wish there was something I could do to make her not feel so horrible from all these meds. I'm hoping her appointment tomorrow will show either an increase, or stablization and we can at least take her down a notch.

I am going to school pursuing a legal degree, so much for that, I haven't gone to class in over two weeks, I had an interview, another no show, I don't care because this girl, is my priority right now.  I thought that going thru this once was bad, going thru it for a second time is torture.  You worry about everything !!

Well this is my story and hence my introduction on the site.

After reading.. I wanted to add, I used Frontline Flea Med, instead of Advantage.  Dammit.

    Re: AIHA or IMHA

Thank you.  It's just so sad to know that so many other people are going through the same thing.  When your furbaby has this you feel so isolated and alone.  I don't leave my house much, all I want to do is be here for her.  Everything is affected.  I am so thankful that I am not working right now and I can afford to stay home with her.   The cost of treatment is so much and I am thankful for the ability to pay for her appointments and treatment which has cost me $1200 in a matter of two weeks.  The love and comfort this girl has given me is priceless.  I'd sell everything I have just to make sure that she receives every treatment available to get her well.  My prayers and heart goes out to everyone on this forum and just reading through the stories make me cry.  I feel so compelled to help and to get the word out there for others.
