Willow update--She's almost back to normal.  I haven't seen poop yet but probably tonight.  She's eating about half meals of her regular diet so far.  I'm not forcing her.  She's looking good otherwise.

Callie--Can she stay on Forti-Flora forever??

Called the vet they insist that the Pepcid AC only be given once a day.  His PCV was up to 26 when we got it checked yesterday!  Smoke is still comin to work.  He's finally starting to get the routine of things.  I'm just so glad he's doing better!

Frisby just takes one Pepcid AC per day, as well. Yeah Smokie and Willow--it sounds like you're both making good progress!

Has anyone tried purchasing meds using the Free Drug Card, which offers up to a 75% discount at human pharmacies?

Calypso takes Pepcid 10mg twice a day. When my great dane was on prednisione, she also took Pepcid twice a day.

I guess maybe with the Pepsid it depends on what the dog is on for medication.  And, maybe even the dogs weight.  Cause, on the bottle it does say not to exceed 2 in 24 hrs and thats for a human.  Either way, I don't think it's harmful.

    Re: AIHA or IMHA

That would make sense, My dane was 130lbs and was on Pepcid 20mg twice a day. Calypso is 40lbs and takes 10mg twice a day.

Vary it -- you don't want to stay on any ONE probiotic forever (remember, it IS bacteria -- **good* bacteria, yes, but it IS bacteria).   So I switch around and I don't give a probiotic unless it's necessary.  (some dogs it IS).

Anotehr good one is Digestive Advantage (the irritable bowel one) -- Kee and I both take that.

Now Brand Foods has a good one "Gr-8-Dopholus" -- that I also like a WHOLE lot.

    Re: AIHA or IMHA

CORRECTION  PLEASE IGNORE THE QUOTES IN EVERYONE'S THREAD ABOUT THIS-- I was wrong and I'm correcting it -- :

Pepcid is a 12 hour drug, Zantac is 8, Tagamet is just 6 hour.  Prilosec is 24.  And yet, they had Billy on Prilosec TWICE a day.

Any OTC instruction is lower dose than a doctor would prescribe.  I'm flabbergasted that the vet isn't having the dogs take more stomach protectant -- I'm sure they have a reason, but frankly I'd want to know WHY.  Keeping the stomach happy is such a big deal.  They may think that it inhibits absorption?  But protecting the stomach is such a big huge deal with this.

(more edit:  my post on the next page explains -- there IS a concern about interaction with some other drugs which may be why some vets are only using it once a day and that might be why my vet had me use Prilosec)

Pepcid is an 8 hour drug

You know more about it than I do, but I was using the Pepsid A/C--that's what they told me to get, not just the regular Pepsid.  So, it's like extra strength (I'm thinking) so it does last longer than 8 hrs.  I think it's more like 12hrs.

But, again, I really don't think it's such a strong drug that it will make any difference if they take 1 or 2.  That's just my unscientific opinion.

    Lori

Thank you Callie!!  I will vary it with the ones you suggested.  In your opinion, how long should I leave her on one before switching to another?  Months, weeks, I'm not sure.  The Forti-Flora comes in 30 count boxes which is one packet per day.

    Re: AIHA or IMHA

This is what I was told by OSU regarding Pepcid AC.  A normal human dose is 10mg every 24 hours.  For dogs it is 10mg every 12 hours.  Something to do with a dog's digestive system/stomach makes it necessary to do it every 12 instead of every 24. If it were me I would give every 12 hours while on Prednisone to be sure.

Extra Strength Pepcid AC is the same medicine just in a 20mg pill.  My vet said to use only the 10mg pill.  Cyclops is 60 pounds.  You may find it cheaper to buy the 20mg pill and use a pill splitter and give 1/2 of that 20 every 12 hours.

everything he said. -- "extra strenght" pretty much always means a bigger dose.  and you do dose that one by weight in dogs.

I'm going to mention again -- you folks truly may want to get "The Pill Book Guide to Medication for Your Dog and Cat" (Dell reference, 1998) -- it de-mystifies stuff like this because it tells you how long a drug works in the system, HOW it works, what you can't use it with, what a bad reaction looks like, etc.  You can buy a Veterinary PDR but they're pricey (like $100 or more) but the Pill Book is way under $10.  Amazon has it.  It won't have the newer drugs in it, but stuff like Zantac, Pepcid, Benedryl, etc -- it is a GREAT resource.

I think Pepcid is every 12 hour drug (not every 8 hours) regardless of whether it is the regular strength (10mg) or extra strength (20mg). I believe dogs over 100lbs can get the 20mg.
