    NRA ads....I'm seriously insulted

OK, the NRA supports Bush, errr McSame, and is against O'Bama.  Got it.  But, when they premiere that negative commercial in baseball playoffs, it says to ME that they are thinking that ALL baseball viewers are redneck, swigging the beer bottle by the neck, kinda 2 sandwiches short of a picnic, sort of folks.  Admittedly, I was too drowsy to take full note of the second commercial (my four ounces of beer also did me in) but the first one seriously got my dander up.  Let me clarify that I drink that little bit of beer because Red Sox fans are superstious and if eating hot dogs and drinking a little beer helps the team WIN, well, we do it.  In some homes, I'm betting it's sushi, or lasagna...anything those folks ate when they WON in 2004.....like in turnaround game in 2004.

That does not mean that all baseball fans are like the doofus in the first ad, who by the way, implied that going to Church is something that McSame supports and O'Bama rejects.......

Someone seriously missed the mark in their demographic research if they think THAT kind of ad is going to appeal to the masses watching baseball.  I'm not going to even get into my feelings on gun control, but gosh darn, those ads really ticked me off.

so you're saying ALL people who have guns are red necks swilling beer bottles by the neck and are two sandwiches shy of a picnic? Wink

    Re: NRA ads....I'm seriously insulted

Nope, I'm saying that's what the ad appeared to be saying, and the placement of that ad in the playoffs, and at least one other that I zoned through, THEY are saying that all baseball fans are of the same caliber, and I find that insulting.

I'm actually on the fence with gun control....spend a lot of time sitting on that fence.  I see no reason for the government to decide how many guns JQP can own, but, I do have a problem with "JQP" owning assault rifles, or stockpiling weapons, as the MI Militia do  So, I support gun control to a certain extent, but oppose also.

I just found "Joe Sixpack" annoying and insulting.

I've got nothing against sportsmen or people who own a gun for personal protection but the NRA is a scary bunch.Nothing they say or do suprises me anymore.

    Re: NRA ads....I'm seriously insulted

I was just yanking your chain by the way, wasnt trying to annoy (hence the Wink )

i dont watch much tv, and i'd rather play baseball than watch it so i dont know what those adds were saying. and i agree with you about being on the fence. i'm NOT a member of the NRA and dont own assault rifles, but i do own a rifle and two 20 guages (inherited from my grandad years ago)

I think people stock piling weapons like that probably have some serious conspiracy Anti-Government issues.... OR they're worried if the US was ever invaded or had a major disaster then they dont have to rely on the police for protection,(ie Katrina etc). however.... as long as they dont go out and use them on people then i dont care how many guns they have.

its the gang bangers, drug dealers, thugs, etc that i want under control. those people ARE using those guns to protect their livelyhoods..

    Re: NRA ads....I'm seriously insulted

Someone having an antique gun collection is a bit different than someone owning assault rifles, stockpiling guns because they don't recognize the US government and are planning a "takeover" ie: the Michigan Militia, those lovely folks responsible for the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City.

My brother in law owns guns, even has a carry permit and is a card carrying member of the NRA.  He goes to a shooting range often.  He hunts, without any luck most years, and whether I like him and his attitudes in general, I don't see the typical NRA member as like him.  Nor do I see the typical NRA member as the fellow conveyed in that commercial last night. My Dad always had guns, always hunted, taught us girls to hunt.

In many ways I see gun control as having a negative affect on law abiding citizens, with criminals finding guns regardless.  But, hey.  NO ONE needs an assault rifle.  NO ONE needs to own an automatic weapon.  Law abiding or otherwise.

If the NRA chooses to represent their membership in the manner they did last night, they are, in my opinion, doing more harm than good.  And, I'm still insulted that they see to think, by placement of the ad in the playoffs, that baseball fans are all LIKE the fellow they protrayed.

And, I knew you were mostly just picking.....THEY are the ones who represented their members in such a manner, and they are the ones who picked that particular placement.

The whole thing just rubbed me the wrong way......

I think that it was smart for the NRA to premiere their commercial during the playoffs.  If I were trying to figure out how to get maximum exposure for a commercial, then sports playoffs seem like a natural way to go.  Lots of people watch the playoffs, so why not have them view your commercial as well?

Of course, these are just the mumblings of a gun owning, redneck, who is not above drinking beer from a bottle....

I was just going to write what BEVOLASVEGAS did. I don't drink any kind of alcohol, but I am a multi gun owning redneck with a conceal carry license and I do carry about 99% of the time.

And if you don't mind me saying so, it seems as if you are suggesting that those that would be interested in the NRA are "swigging the beer bottle by the neck, kinda 2 sandwiches short of a picnic, sort of folks."  I tend to be more supportive of the NRA than not.  I don't want to get into a huge gun control debate, but Chicago has a very high murder rate and has had a ton of shootings lately, and guns are banned there.  That being said, I'm voting for Obama....

It is much more likely that they know that a lot of people are going to be watching the playoffs, just like all the companies that bought advertising time.......

    Re: NRA ads....I'm seriously insulted

Once again.....it is NOT me that thinks of gun owners as a bunch of rednecks.  IT WAS THE COMMERCIAL.

I swear I could almost see the Dixie flag on the back window of this guys pickup truck.  What popped into my mind watching that commercial was YEHAW.  Break out them white sheets.

My reaction to the commercial is disturbing.  THEY should be concerned that  many voters might have reacted the same way that I did.  I felt that THEY were saying that gun owners were beer guzzling rednecks who weren't too smart, and by placing that ad in baseball, that baseball fans fit that same mold. THATS what offended me.

Once more, in general I support the rights of law abiding citizens to own guns.  That right stops at assault and automatic weapons.  If someone can show me a reason that JQP might need an assault or automatic weapon, then perhaps I will reconsider my opinion.

I also support the right of folks to drink beer,  Grasping the neck of the bottle or however.  Since I"m not terribly fond of the taste, I prefer a little bit in a glass to help the Red Sox win.

I clearly didn't communicate well that it was the whole theme of the ad that made me so angry....

Exactly! Not all baseball fans are rednecks, but baseball is the "American Pastime" so I would would suspect that a lot of the audience is just that. Fortunately, in Canada we are not subjected to NRA commercials on sports shows or anywhere for that matter. Apparently the media sees the Canadian sport fan as a someone who is overloaded with testosterone. It's all about T&A and 'that' is not a gun in his pocket - LOL!

    Re: NRA ads....I'm seriously insulted

They have other commercials. I sort of saw one later in the game that was NOT offensive.  Or that wasn't offensive enough to wake me from a semi-doze to throw stuff at the TV.

That particular commercial was in poor taste, and you hit the nail on the head....YOU would suspect that a lot of the audience is redneck, and that's exactly what bugged me...was that THEY thought we were all a bunch of rednecks/good ole boys.

I didn't agree with their message, that O'Bama is unfit to make decisions regarding gun rights, but, I wouldn't have gotten my dander up over a commercial that didn't make me visualize the Dixie flag hanging from the back window of the pick up truck.

I'm not a gun owner, for my own reasons, but please don't sterotype all gun owners as tobacco chewing, good ole boys displaying the confederate flag in their pick up trucks.  THAT'S what THEY did.  And, as a matter of fact, my college professor BIL who is a gun owner and NRA member was offended also.
