    Re: Male vs. Female dogs

As far as GSDs, many people have told me that females are easier to train and males are a bit slower to mature, females tend to me more guardy of people and males more guardy of things and property.

I am getting a male GSD b/c I plan on leaving him intact so I can show WDA and UKC.  I just don't ever feel like dealing with a female in heat!

Coke and Kenya are night and day, temperament and social-wise, but I think there's a lot more at play than just their gender.

I've had three boys and five girls.I'd go with a girl again I think. We live in farm country and even when neutered young the boys have a harder time respecting the property line and want to roam where the girls have learned where there territory ends quickly and didn't require such close supervision. Most of the strays that have shown up here over the years have been boys too.

We've ALWAYS had female dogs. I've had 1 male ridgeback (Ivan) and then Wyatt and Kaiser. I think i have fallen for the boys!!

    Re: Male vs. Female dogs

Generally speaking I like them both. We've had more males than females as a family. That said, all three of my personal dogs have been females. I have never had a male. I love my girls' attitudes and their spunk. I love how bitchy they can be and funny in a non traditional way. All my girls have been so quirky and weird and just lots of fun. I have a feeling I'll end up with another girl next, though I do like the boys too.

Females to me just seem more b!tchy then males, but maybe I am biased.

Males seem to be more laid back and mellow in temperment. I think males are more forgiving of accidents and friendlier towards strangers. Females are easier to train to me, tho.

We have 3 boys, & 3 girls.  I prefer the boys, because they all adore me.  DH prefers the girls for the same reason.

Our girls are more laid back, & friendlier towards strangers than the boys are.  I suspect that this is more of a breed difference, as opposed to a gender issue.

I've had both, but I do prefer the males. Like someone said above, they like the males in other pet species, also. That's me, I just think they have way better personalities and are way more clownish. For me they train just as easy if not better.

Wanted to add in, my female wasn't so much of a player as Apollo is. Also, maybe it's just Apollo, but he rolls over on his back more for belly rubs. And he wants to snuggle and get super close to you (always has to be touching you in some way). My female would snuggle, but doG forbid you should move or sneeze, she'd be up and would give you this dirty look like, "Well, I was comfy..."

I like a good bitch. I feel with bitches, as with mares, you form an equal partnership with great depth, whereas with males and geldings the relationship is more one-way and never as deep, rich, and as complicated as with your bitch.  "you ask a mare and tell a gelding" seems to apply to dogs as well.

I think it depends largely on the breed, IME. My male minpin, now almost 13, has been devoted, lots of fun, very funny PAIN in the BUTT! He has had years-long issues with attempting to be alpha over any and all human/dog. He marks in the house and cannot be trusted to have free run of the house. I have had male bichons (also markers but not so much alpha-seekers) and toy poodles who would never dream of peeing in the house. THey adored all people and humans. I have 2 girl bichons who are angellic, if not a bit dull, honestly, chase a ball? Get it yourself! But very affectionate and happy to be lower pack members. THey are sweet and loving, as was the female toy poodle I had years ago. So anyway, any future dogs- I"m not sure about the sex, but more important to me now is temperament.

I prefer males. Females have that slight (sometimes not so slight, lol, independent streak). They want attention more on their own terms and boys tend to always be up to snuggling. The exception would be dominant males.

For me, it depends some on the breed. I really, really, really prefer male corgis. You could not PAY me to own another female corgi. (Well, okay, yes, you could. :P But it'd have to be a pretty special girl.) In the collies, I like both- the boys are sweeter and the girls have more initiative (in my admittedly limited experience.). In the spitz, I haven't had a boy yet but decided I wanted a girl since I knew that I wanted to show and breed and it'd be easier to ship semen from a nice boy than try and find a nice girl to compliment a boy I already had- it just made more sense from a practical standpoint. (That said, Lizzie had a parti brother I adored and ALMOST took instead.)

Both have their advantages. I *do* like that the girls mature much faster. But I like how loyal the boys are. ;P

Oooh, I like that a lot... ask a female, tell a male. Because it's not saying anything bad about either gender, or saying one is better than the other..it's just a preference thing.

I much prefer females, but honestly, I've never been able to put my finger on WHY exactly. Even that ask vs. tell thing isn't exactly it. I just can't see myself owning a male dog, though I probably will end up with one some day...

Interestingly, Cherokee much prefers female dogs as well.

    Re: Male vs. Female dogs

Throughout my life I've had a variety of breeds, mixes and genders. I have to say at the sum of all the personalities as I look back and current ... I can't decide. I do think there's something in the decision about whether to go with a "characterized" intelligent dog versus one that is known for a different talent -- or it could be the group of dog. Of the females we've had the most gentle, forgiving, loving, wonderful, sweet yet protective when needed was a Wheaten. The most all but intolerable was a Lhasa. The snarkiest, sneakiest, funniest, bear hugging lunatic ... my current Belgian Malinois female, Tanya. I have two other male Malinois right now, one is her litter mate, who was the largest in the litter of 10 and I think suffered a bit on getting his fair share of the gene pool. Tanya darling is very very adaptable and yet knows when to walk away. She is also very good at giving "the look" to stop either of them dead in their tracks.

Sorry guys, I have to say, unless you're a strong enough person don't get a female of a strong breed ... most men can't handle that, hee hee hee.

I also recently lost our male Great Dane, who really was a person. Great Danes are by far the most emotional breeds I have ever had, and it's so unfair their lifespans are so short. We were lucky enough to have his litter mate sister in the extended family. The combination of nature and nurther did not work to her favor -- a very strong protective female in a home with little or no training or limits did not do her personality well and she turned to the dark side simply because she was allowed to. She was extremely dominant from the get go, and when a strong, enormous, dominant spoiled baby doesn't get her way, everyone and every piece of furniture in the house should be on alert!

Sally and Jack are like this, and I'm not sure if it's so much a sex thing as a breed thing and individual thing.  We had Jack as a 10 week old pup and Sally was a rescue at a year old from God-knows-what background so it's hard to say if little differences I see are because of sex or past experiences.

I will say that out of the two Jack is *much* better with puppies.  Sally isn't *bad* with them, but she is not very gentle and has less patience.  Jack is very careful with pups and will let them do pretty much anything to him...
