    Neighbor's WAY TOO THIN dog..

    I do understand there are reasonable limits some people have as to what their dogs can and can't eat. I also understand that you need to feed your dog at least once a day, and give them the proper amount of food. I'm not trying to start any trouble or even be rude but my neighbor's have 3-4 dogs.. often times one of them, who I believe is a rat terrier gets off his leash and ends up in the street. I've had to go over there twice, once with them home but they wouldn't answer the door. All the dogs are on chains outside and the one (rat terrier?) looks as though he only has a couple of feet to move around, which means he's probably having to use his area as a bathroom also. He also looks as though he's starving. Literally, I mean I think they may either be starving the dog or maybe they cannot afford food? My dog Chico is a very healthy dog and you can see his 'waistline' but he does not get underfed; Compaired with the dog across the street -- the dogs just look pathetic. One of the dogs, who I'm not even sure what type of breed it is, but it has one of those round plastic trash barrels as his 'home'. They never are let inside, not even in the winter. I also never see water or food outside and the terrier is the one chained up close to their door. I am honestly thinking about going to one of our dollar shops and buying them dog food. I don't mean it to be rude but my next step will be calling animal control. As I've experienced though, it's best not to do that unless absolutely necessary. The AC here is pretty harsh and doesn't really care for animals properly. There have been plenty of times I just wanted to walk over there and give the dogs some water and food but the terrier, when loose seemed a bit aggressive. I suppose I'd be mean too if I were starved. I'm thinking maybe I could put some dog food on their porch at night maybe with or without a note? I'm really just trying to help but it seems as if they really don't care.

    ** BTW; our dollar shops sell IAMS in small bags and off-brands all for $1 -- so I honestly don't see how anyone can't afford it. Cheap, unhealthy food is better than none at all.

    RE: Neighbor's WAY TOO THIN dog..

    Buying them food is not a bad idea, but remember if you start, they may come to expect it of you. It is also possible that they will find out it has been you leaving the food and get pissed off. Chances are they can afford food- most of the people who treat their dogs this way in my town *can* afford alcohol and drugs, yet they can't seem to feed their animals. You may give them the food, and they STILL won't feed them so be prepared...

    You can google "dogs deserve better" and request that an informational packet be sent to their house. DDB also has funds from time to time to provide fencing, trolley systems and proper shelter for low income people who have dogs in this situation. I know how you feel about AC.. Ours has such a high kill rate that it makes me not want to call sometimes, but if you run out of options what is worse? A quick painless death, or starving and freezing to death? It might not turn out that way. Small dogs have a much better chance. I wish you the best and I hope it all works out

    I wouldnt bother buying the food unless you are going to go over and feed it to the dogs yourself.I would wait until they werent home and feed them some food with water in it.Its too bad your AC is so bad.Ours is generally very helpful and they take pretty good care of them.They have a 94% adoption rate here.
    Good luck with whatever you decide and bless you for wanting to help them.
    I second the DDB idea.

    Toss some treats to those dogs and I bet you become their best friend.  I hope you find a way to better their lot in life.

    Are there any rescues in your area that could help?

    RE: Neighbor's WAY TOO THIN dog..

    Thanks for your help guys -- I've checked out the DDB website and I plan on ordering these;

    I thought either those or the doorhangers but I bet the brochures would be more helpful. The only thing is.. I guess since I have to order them I'll just tape it to their front door?

    DDB asks you not to, b/c it is a federal offense. Kinda dumb, but true. (I think?)

    RE: Neighbor's WAY TOO THIN dog..

    If I can't put it in their mailbox or tape it to their door ..how can I do it? Handing it to them would make them awfully upset and I don't think they are reasonable people. [&:]

    You can tape it to their door.. nothing wrong with that. Or you can email DDB and request that they send a free informational packet- as long as you know their name/address. It is ok to mail it to them.

    Mail it to them.  Just don't put a return address on the envelop.
