    Canidae formula changes

I don't post much in the Nutrition section much, but this came up on a vizsla forum I'm on. I'm not sure if the info has been posted here or not. If so, sorry!

Apparently instead of using white and brown rice, they are now using what the term a "diversified" protein profile. I think they added peas and millet.

Whoa!  That's just not smart.  Well, I guess it's their decision but I can say they will lose a lot of customers who realize that Chicken Soup and Diamond Naturals both offer almost the same formulas - but Chicken Soup is more like the old Canidae and Diamond Naturals is less expensive.

Wow, that really sucks. I really liked that formula as sort of a "fall-back", but I won't feed barley.

    And wtf??? From http://canidae.com/new-formulas.html:

Is cracked pearled barley in the wheat family?

No, barley is polished and cracked to create cracked pearled barley. The polishing removes the inedible hull from the kernel, while cracking it improves digestibility. Barley is not related with the wheat family in any way, and is not known to create allergies.

Liars! Wheat and barley are really closely related! Plus gluten is WELL KNOWN to create allergies.

Grrrrrrr... I hate dog food manufacturers.

Weird.  I guess I will be trying Natural Balance or California Natural next.  Coke gets sick really easily, no one thing in particular, but I'm thinking California Natural might be wise to try.

Well, I had to update my website to remove Canidae from my recommended foods.  I can't believe they have the nerve to say that wheat and barley are not at all related.  My list of foods to feed keeps getting smaller.

    Re: Canidae formula changes

That SUCKS!   We switched to Canidae two months ago and the dogs have been doing amazingly well, I believe Sophie is sensitive to barley and that's why Canidea worked so well.  Guess we might be on the hunt for a new food.  It really sucks though, I'd rather they upped their prices than start using filler type ingredients.   I hate when something is working and than they go and change the formula.  It was a long search to find the "right" food for the dogs, I really don't want to have to do it again.

Well, looks like I'll be needing to get some samples of other foods...

    Re: Canidae formula changes

Oh they also added rice bran as one of the main ingredients. Oatmeal is new to, on top of all the other grains it seems a tad much.

Chicken meal, turkey meal, lamb meal, brown rice, white rice, rice bran, peas, potatoes, oatmeal, cracked pearled barley, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), millet, tomato pomace, natural flavor, flaxseed meal, ocean fish meal, choline chloride, sun cured alfalfa meal, inulin (from chicory root), lecithin, sage extract, cranberries, beta carotene, rosemary extract, sunflower oil, yucca schidigera extract, dried enterococcus faecium, dried lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, dried aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract, dried bacillus subtilis fermentation extract, saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation solubles, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid, cobalt proteinate, organic selenium, papaya, pineapple.

    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

There have been lot's of rumors circulating about Canidae, and since I feed
Canidae, I picked up the phone 1-800-398-1600 and was answered fairly
    quickly, and by a human!

Here is what they told me:

Canidae has changed formulas, and they are no longer using their old
manufacturing plant at all. They are now using Diamond's plant. Diamond has
made some serious advances in the testing and quality control departments,
and Canidae felt that this was in better keeping with their plans for the
future. Further, Canidae's old plant could not keep up with the demand.
As far as the new formula goes, the percentages on the nutrients are the
same, the ingredients and sources for the sugars and carbs have changed.
There is more lamb (I only checked on the All Life Stages formula, sorry),
the same percentage of brown and white rices, but the other carb sources
have changed to ones that are lower glycemic index. This includes less than
25% of carbs from oatmeal, peas, potatoes, barley and millet.

This should lead to better digestibility, as well as less sugar highs and
lows, better for all dogs, but especially diabetics.
I am not 100% sure that I am relaying this information accurately, but they
are very helpful, and I encourage you to call for yourselves if you are
    concerned.

    Re: Canidae formula changes

Oh wow, this gets more and more interesting.  I had no clue it was being manufatured by Diamond.   Interesting about it being "better" now.  It just seems like cheaper quality ingredients at a more expensive price.  Kibbles n Bits could probably say the nutrient values are the same as high quality foods, that doesn't make it as good since there is all the other crap in it.

    Re: Canidae formula changes

The food might not be good for those with allergies, but for dogs that don't have food sensitivities, it should make no difference.  It's not like they are adding MORE grains and thus reducing the amount of protein.   That's staying the same.  The carbohydrate source will just be more diversified.  Nature's Variety uses barley, millet and oatmeal in their core grain ingredients too.  I have no problem with the changes.

In regards to Diamond making the food now, I also hear that the same plant makes Chicken Soup, Wellness, Natural Balance and a few others, so I think it's silly to rule out a food simply by who makes it.

I'm not sure I'd use the word "silly" - different people have different comfort levels.  Mine's on the move currently.  It does that.

But oddly, Diamond's manufacturing practices are not a huge issue to me.  What's odd is how Canidae is removing itself from what I thought was a very nice little niche.  Grain is not grain is not grain.  I really liked the Platinum as a good transition between super fussy or junky foods, to a combo kibble homemade diet, for my rescues.  By not being "diversified", I could isolate any problems quickly if they arose.

Re: Canidae formula changes *link to updated info*

I feed the Chicken and Rice formula to Baily...both dry and canned.  I sent Canidae an email 3-4 days ago and finally got a response.

I asked " when will the new formula of the Chicken & rice dry food be available in stores?"

They didn't actually answer my question, which was really annoying...not to mention she got my name wrong...  ?????

Anyway, she DID give me the following link      http://www.canidae.com/new-formulas.html

This page all about how and why the changes were made.  They must have changed this page recently because the statement quoted by chelsea_b (shown above about barley not related wheat) is no longer there.....

All this food stuff is really confusing and frustrating to me.  Since I immediately dumped the last bag I bought (two weeks ago) into and airtight bin and tossed the bag....I don't know if Baily is eating the old or new .  He is alternating Canidae with Nature's Variety Beef right now and so far no problems.  I guess I will just keep on going while closing monitoring him for changes.

BTW...anybody know when this went into stores...or has it not hit yet???

(  I have yet to figure out how to quote only part of a post Stick out tongue  )

They said the new bags will have a sticker or something on it letting you know.  It was probably the old kind if you got it a few weeks ago.  I think the lamb one was changed first but I could be wrong.

That's good to know.  I was hoping they would mark the bags somehow.  I don't think my last purchase looked any different....

Re: Canidae formula changes *link to updated info*

My local pet food store said yesterday was the first day they were getting a delivery with  the new formula.   She said she called Canidae and the reason they are switching the formula is because they cannot obtain rice right now?  She said there are a lot of shortages out there of supplies so people are mad because they can't get the foods they've always used.

I think I'll give the new formula a shot, if the dogs seem itchy from the Barley I'll try out Chicken Soup.  I'm not a huge Diamond fan, but I'm not so much concerned about product safety at this point.
