They just called me to say Thank you for being a busy body!!

Way to go!!        It is surprising how many people just don't THINK.

At a fast food place I listened to a woman making travel reservations over a cell phone.  When she got up to leave I pulled her aside and asked her to please be more careful - that if I were to follow her (and her two small children) home, I would then know where she lived and when she was going to be out-of-town.

Her eyes got big and she said that she had never thought of that.  I can only hope that she really learned to be more careful with private information.

That is so scary. I love to take my poodles with me when I go places and we often-times draw a small crowd because there really aren't many Standards in our area. There's something about a big poodle - everyone is drawn to their coat and just want to touch it!

I've never been asked about price, but I have been asked by some really strange people, about breeding to my male.  I have told someone who made me nervous that 'he's only a pup and being neutered next week'.  It is scary the people you run in to.  Two of mine are a little standoffish at first and I don't discourage that completely.

It was wonderful of you to warn that poor person about possibly being followed.  I'd still be so scared if I were her, especially after getting those guys in trouble.  You just hope they won't come back now to retalitate.

Dogs are proof...God not only loves us and wants us to be happy, but He also has a great sense of humor and likes to hear us laugh!!!

When we first got Aesop, an older lady kept asking (while we were at the pet store) "How much did you pay for him? I paid $3000 for my Bulldog..was it in that range?"Confused We dodged her questions and scooted to a different area of the store

wow~! kudos for you for THINKING and ACTING!  I dont think I will have the brains or galls to do BOTH!

My family members, and my parent's friends always ask for one of CoCo's "babies" when she has one... Old fashioned Vietnamese people.... They always get so shocked when I tell them that yes, I volunteeringly took her to, and paid for her to get spayed! lol

Then they ask me how much she cost, and I tell them the cost for her is relatively cheap, it's the cost of maintaining her in terms of Vet bills which is expensive!

These are just family/friends and I just tell 'em the truth, but now I can see there are people out there with more evil intentions!  Thanks for opening my naive eyes!

People are *constantly* asking me what I paid for Ena, and I won't tell them anything. It's rude, and annoying. One woman went so far as to say that I should be careful, because "someone" would just scoop her right up.... That was a little creepy.

people ask me how much i paid for my dogs ALL THE TIME! but it's a cultural thing here. they also life to ask what your salary is, and how much you pay in rent, and how much you paid for this and that... you get used to it. they really dont know it's considered rude to westeners...

but then i always say they were free :) (which is true). they also asked me many times about breeding (since i have 1 male and 1 female).

but i AM very careful about disclosing where i live. LOTS of people know what area i live in but they coulnt find my place... i live alone, so i am very careful about that. i gave my bf my keys, because i dont have a peephole in my door, and if i am not expecting anyone, i WILL NOT open my door. PERIOD! the meter readers hate it, but we have an intercom system which they can use to reach me. but they dont. so too bad! hehe

I had a similar situation. While visiting the in-laws, I was walking Shadow. A kid was asking me questions that were similar. How much did I pay? Nothing. What kind of dog is he? I told him. How much is he worth? And I told the truth, which is nothing. A mixed breed or mutt, no matter what you paid for it has no resale value. And I was a bit wary for the rest of the visit.

Those people are very lucky that you are so attentive.

I don't know what's up with people asking how much we paid for a dog.  I can understand if they are SERIOUSLY interested in the breed.  You wouldn't believe how many people ask how much I paid for Kaiser.  It's one of the first questions that they ask after finding out that he's not a husky puppy.

I don't feel that it's anyone's business what I paid for my dog.  My typical answer is either, "a lot," or "enough."  If someone really wants to know what a Klee Kai goes for, they can contact a breeder.

I know it seems so weird/rude to me.  You don't walk up to a stranger and ask what their salary is, or how much they pay for their mortgage....  I have committed to a pup from a certain litter that I will get in the fall and we still have not talked about price.  This is a pet that is like part of the family, not a piece of used equipment to barter over, nor some expensive novelty item to parade around.

Bonita, you are an angel!! That lady should be very grateful about your advice.

We have been asked about Thor's puppies since he was a puppy and DH always said to people: "No way, you would not take care of his puppy as well as we take care of him" in a very rude way. But here is how you talk to people, everybody is rude!! You could be in the airport and the guy carriying the bags, would ask about that, and the people in the petstore, people walking, the neighbour. DH always talked about how much we spent in food and always somebody said: "No way, he should be eating chicken bones, leftovers and rice" and we Confused "suuuure". Even one of my friends tried to give me an opened, out of date, looking grey, bag of bacon for Thor. Se said: "That will be the best treat ever for him"...

    Crazy people!

Good for you!  I occasionally get people who ask about Oliver and I always reply that he was so sick after he was *neutered* and the medication tore up his stomach and now he is on special and very expensive food and how much the vet bills are for him...  LOL.  As soon as you start a litany of the expenses and health problems, they get themselves out of the conversation pretty quickly - almost listening to Aunt Mable talk about her sciatica flaring up!

He is perfectly healthy, I *choose* to feed him expensive food and provide top notch vet care (which, beyond the initial treatment for pneumonia has only been basic vaccs).  Even though he is a mutt, I choose to make him appear of no value to strangers.

    Adoption cost - $90

Collars, leashes, training, daycare, food,  treats, grooming, medications and vet visits - $5,356

Curling up next to me at night and giving a contented sigh before going to sleep - priceless

Re: let's talk about what WE paid for our dogs NOT!!!

I've never had anyone directly ask me how much Kirby is worth, though after getting into a discussion on his breed, I have had people ask about the general prices of a papillon.  I don't have any problem answering basic questions like that.  Whenever I get into a conversation on how I got him from a breeder I always go into how although he came from a wonderful breeder, he is not show dog quality because he is too large, his hind feet slightly duck footed, and thus was neutered so not to pass of his poor genetics.  If someone did ask his specific price I wouldn't give them a dollar amount but would say cheap for the above reasons.

One thing that I've always found curious though is how many people who say right off the bat say, "Oh, he is so cute did you get him at Puppy Palace?"  Apparently it is the pet store to get dogs in my area. Hmm

Yep, everyone asks if I bought Summer at the Puppy Store here, too.

Paps are little and fluffy so I think most people assume it's some sort of trendy chihuahua mix.  I get a lot of people asking how much I paid for Summer once they figure out it's a breed they've never heard of and not a chihuahua.  I generally say 'Papillons can vary in price depending on the quality of the breeder' and leave it at that.  It's not their business!

Brilliant!  Great idea for a deterrent.  LOL

You just never know what people have on their minds, could be criminal, could be mere curiosity.  Best to be safe.  It makes me very uncomfortable when someone asks me how much I paid for my dogs.  I typically say...Too much; and change the subject.

Bonita...your initiative was also brilliant.  You definately have done your civic duty for the week.  Way To Go!

Re: let's talk about what WE paid for our dogs NOT!!!

I know I started this thread because of the Lady at Wally World but reading replies and thinking about friends has made me start thinking ABOUT what we do pay for our dogs.  And how sometimes the choices we make, weather because we are pigheaded or just not very bright about some things should at least be acknowledged. My dogs get excelent care and if I have to scrape it is always on myself first, then the hubs then the house, then the adult kids then the out of state kids and  then rarely on the 5 Grands, kids we are raising, they still come first  but not by much..Yes  and they know it !!  I have only bought ONE dog in the past 12 years. All of my pack is part of my breeding program. We do not breed very often but the litters are really nice and I normally keep a girl.  Right now my core pack is 7 with two I am caring for for a family that checks on them all the time and sends smell packages to make sure they won't be forgotten while waiting for the apartment to availble and renovated.  While I understand our passion is expensive and prohibits having new kitchen cupboards , heck even having my teeth whitened or a tummy tummy tuck like many of my friends will never happen unless we hit a lotto Hmm  But what ARE we doing ??

We used to show  a great deal with a Mastiff Kennel. Pretty much lost touch when the Hubs was forced into early retirementafter the buy out of the company he had worked for for over 30 years. Chnage is tough for some folks...   but I dogress, I will truly never understand the attraction of the giant breed after you have been around them for a weekend and wiped slime off any and everything withing slinging distance. ! They were sweet , don't get me wrong. But my smaller breed will not only out guard them but out live them.  Baffles me I guess. There was Mastiff in our breed in the early development, and Dane and Airdale and Pointer and a half of dozen others that the early farmers brought to Rhodesia to and crossed with the Khoi Khoi a native ridged dog.  So yes I have expensive mutts.

At one time our friends in Mastiffs and Irish Wolfhounds would get into a "one up" mood and begin to talk what they paid or what the current $$ on a puppy would run.  I always sat back and listened thinking , gee the slobber and hair was really enough you do not have to KEEP pointing out why it's silly to own one Tongue Tied People think I am nuts with the pack of 9 ,,,, the IW kennel has a pack of 5 IW and another 6 Border Terriers, the Mastiff kennel has 4 right now.  The IW kennel were already wealthy, the Mastiff kennel is so addicted that at the last show the wife who is older than I said she is begining to worry she'll never be able to retire, they have cashed in CDS to pay vet bills , from causal listening I know they have paid almost as much on the dogs as it cost them to build their home !  Special diets, constant vet care , show fees,  show clothes, 2 RVs in the past 10 years, special cars to transport them,  only one ever finished, and they have only had one litter with like two puppies ! The last 4 show pups they got were all heartbreaking,  A fawn bitch,  had severe HD by 5 months, returned to breeder,  another fawn had pyometria after her first season had to be spayed in an emergency surgery,  so then they got a boy, a good looking boy and because the work schedule was rough they agreed ( while drinking) at a National Specialty to let him go with another handler /breeder to California, he bloated and died 2 days later, finally they ended up with the new brindle pup... he is not even a year and already had surgery for a hip issue  They still have the one retired Champion and a couple of spayed girls.... they are so sure they are right about the breed it is heartbreakingCrying

I sit here and wonder if they had a differnt breed would it have been better? Easier?  It would not have commanded the attention they enjoy when walking them, or the little crowds that can gather but seriously, after  a few months they can't even get on the bed to cuddle to ??? I have too many dogs and I know it was because I have been sooooo dreading the day I no longer have my soul puppy.  Helping a puppy family was a no brainer, they pay for the two boy's every need. Caring for my daughter's dog , again just one of thoes things. my personal 6 are both our past and our future. Retired dogs adored and pampered and young up and commers ,  I have been dragging my feet about getting them finished, both the expense and the conflict with raising yet another family I guess.... One is singled out and only needs majors, another I have barely shown, and the boy is well on his way... for some reason I am okay with taking my time on this set.  I watch my old soul puppy and I suddenly realize what it actually cost me to have them.
