How To Keep Dogs COOL In The Summer?

What do you all do to keep your dog COOL in the summer?  Indoors. It's the hottest day we've had this Spring today.  Our Bichon Frise has never taken warm weather very well.  I read that this is characteristic of the breed.  He lies down on the bathroom tiles a lot.

Is there anything I can do to help him feel cooler?  I saw this thing called [linkhttp://www.gelpedic.com/]Gel Pedic Pet Bed[/link] advertised in Bark Magazine recently.  It's a a dog bed with memory foam in it.   It cost over $100 dollars though.  I don't have the money for it right now.  Any other ideas?

I've got ceiling fans in the bedrooms and if the day is particularly warm I leave the one in my bedroon on.  Max will hop up on the bed right under it.  I also had an attic fan installed.  I wanted a whole house fan but the electrician said the wiring in the house was too old for something that used that much juice. It's set to kick on when the attic temp reaches 115 and so far it seems to be doing the job pretty well.

No, he's not a show dog.  lol.  Yes, we get the puppy Bichon cut at PetSmart.  In the summer we get ridiculous high amounts of humidity.  That's how it is in the Northeast during the summer.  I imagine it's a bit less humid in Clearwater.  I'm sure it gets hot in the summer there, but not as humid.

RE: How To Keep Dogs COOL In The Summer?

We have to worry about high heat about 8 months out of the year and unfortunately have a condo with a southern exposure, almost no insulation and huge vaulted ceilings. Downstairs,  running the air conditioner can be helpful, but is TOTALLY ineffective upstairs in our bedrooms with the high ceiling height and bedroom exposure. In these rooms we use a portable AC unit or swamp cooler type thing (we bought ours about 5 years ago at Costco). We also have high powered fans in every room in the house and had security gates put on all our downstairs doors and windows so we can keep everything open at night to cool our home down as much as possible.

In the summer we use “cool coats” for the dogs (see below link). You can make them easily out of terry cloth and cut them to fit your dog.  When we are going on long walks with the greyhound walking club, we wet these and fold them up and place them in a freezer bag, then freeze them for a few minutes to get very cold. We take them with us so that if the pups get too hot we can easily cool them on the walk.  We had a couple killer days in our house last summer and the ac wasn#%92t enough so we put the coats on them in the house too and it cooled them down quickly.

we have months of humidity - May to early November, late June to early September our humidity runs in the 90%+ ranges - use cool coats, cool water baths, baby powder (baby corn starch better), fans & A/C - & her with allergies to pollen (heavy scratcher)

I sure wish that was true!!
I limit Casey's outside time, and since he is smaller - we do not go on many walks when it is really hot outside. We try to go for our walks around 9 at night, when it is dark and bit cooler outside. We play a lot of fetch in the living room, where the AC is on so he wont overheat outside.
We had cooling collars on the dogs at the shelter last year. They had some sort of jelly in them that you refrigerated and then it stayed cool for a while. I don't know where the volunteer got them - I have not seen them around yet, but they worked really well!

    From http://www.kerryblues.info

Any time a dog's tongue is all the way out, purplish and engorged, and the breathing is fast and hard, suspect heat stress and cool the dog off by:
#1 removing the dog from the hot area (take it inside, for example, or at least into the shade) and
#2 plunge the front paws and forelegs into an ice-and water bath.

Bird hunters use 5 gallon plastic buckets for this. Dump a grocery store bag of ice in and fill with water. Lift the dog under the brisket and just plunge the legs and feet in - even for a moment. Dogs are able to exchange a lot of heat through the paws and legs.

This method does not shock the circulatory system like trying to plunge the dog's whole body into cold water does. DON'T LET A DOG DRINK THE ICE WATER which will probably cause them to regurgitate and lose valuable fluids and electrolytes.

#3 offer room temperature water after cooling the dog
#4 don't work the dog for at least 2 days after heat stress occurs

Not humind in Clearwater, are you nuts?![;)]

I think our climate is a lot like yours - very long, cold, snowy and blizzardy winters and then within a week it's 80s-90s and humid.  This past week it's been hotter here in west Michigan than southern Florida (southeastern Florida is my second home, so I keep their weather ticker next to my local one).  It also gets pretty humid, especially July and August.  Often the humidity creates a 10-15 degree difference in the heat index, so if it's 90 it feels like 105.  Last summer our paint peeled, my mattress grew black mold, and my framed photos were destroyed by humidity.  Unlike Florida, many if not most people here don't have or use air conditioning.

We have basements which generally stay a bit cooler on their own, so I let the animals down there.  Plus they can lay on the cement and keep moving around to a cooler spot.  Once Chop arrives I'll probably get her a kiddy pool if she enjoys water and save any jogging or hard exercise for after sundown.

Well I guess that was a stupid thing to say about the humidity in Clearwater compared to here.  For some reason I thought I had read that the humidty is worse here in the summer than in Florida.

After a run I throw a soaked towel over him for a few minutes out in the sun...probably not the best, but it definately works.

RE: How To Keep Dogs COOL In The Summer?

We do have ceiling fans throughout the house, and also the powerful attic fan that sucks the heat out of the entire house in a matter of minutes.  But, if I'm not going to be around during the day, they get the AC left on for them.

We do the heavy duty walks early in the morning or late in the evening and I like to take them to the lake so I can at least get their paws in the water to cool them off.  They have a wading pool also that we change every morning and I do limit their outside time in high temps.

RE: How To Keep Dogs COOL In The Summer?

We do a number of things to keep cool. We're in Arizona so the temperture is very high and it's very dry around here.
Well, luckily the majority of the house is tile, so the dogs find the cool spots on the floor and abandon their beds and the furniture when it's really baking here.
We keep the AC and fans on.
During walks and car trips, etc. I always keep a to-go bottle and bowl and take extra and put the water on the dogs a bit if there's no pool around to dip their feet in.
Neither of them are crazy about water (but I've been working on that) but they like to put their paws in the water, especially when the dirt is so hot.
I'm planning on getting a kiddie pool for them.

I've got a dog cooler mat from our host, dog.com. It's freezable.

And I think it was either Ace's Mom or Husky Mom who suggested freezing water in a bundt pan and then place outside with the center hole around  a stake in the ground. They can lick at the ice without knocking over the pan.
