Next time I think I'm going to squeal and be like 'Oh you have a cute liddle widdle pibble!  I LOVE pibbles!'

That gave me the best laugh I have had all week :) I luv pibbles!!

That reminds me of a news story form a year back. This guy had barricaded himself in his house, when the cops finally burst in he had a pit bull on a leash and was threatening to let it go (watching it I was scared but something didnt seem right). So true to his word he let it go and it CHARGED the police.......with tail wags and kisses. It was so funny! The policemen could tell otherwise I'm sure they would haev shot it but it was still pretty funny. His big ole tongue was hanging out and he had this look like "oooh we have company", LOL

, or people saying "How can anyone live with something so big?"  We just shrugged the comments off.

lol ask'em next time "You must not be planning on getting married...." meaning.... most great danes are about the size of an average human being... not so big when you put it to that perspective lol

by the way, your "sheltie" sure is cute!!!

see people make comments about my dogs size... last Feb a hunter driving down the logging road pulled over JUST to say to me "You got your hands full with those two!!" i had both Ben and Kaydee out on the double leader and we were all three hauling each other up the hill - i let them pull a bit for the resistance work-out it gives me lol - So yeah, my dogs are big, and they look massive compared to me because i'm short and lean... cant imagine the comments i would get if i was walking anything larger than them!

you know, i get the big dog thing a lot too. People ask me if they are horses or dogs. I think it's hilarious because really, they aren't that big. They are both in the 90s. It obviously doesn't hurt my feelings, but just weird because i'm wondering if these people have ever seen a dane, st bernard, mastiff, etc...

I get a fair number of "wow your dog is skinny/too skinny/in need of a good meal" comments....usually from other lab owners who's dogs have the opposite problem.  I'm tired of getting into it with people who don't recognise the damage they are doing to those poor animals by overfeeding them, so I just....don't.  I smile, nod and walk away.  I know he's a good weight, his vet knows he is a good weight....end of story.

    Re: Hurtful Comments....

More often than not, I get good comments about Shadow because of his striking looks. In fact the only snotty comment came from a co-worker who has never seen him. He called him a mutt. True, that is the technical breeding term. But he spoke it with a derisive tone. Then again, he is as arrogant as the day is long. I used to think of him as our AOE, authority on everything. His dad used to breed Beagles. Some are intimidated by Shadow's wolfish appearance and I've seen a few owners flinch and avoid our path. And I must be some kind of lunatic for walking my wolf without a muzzle.

Other times, I exert excellent self-control to avoid laughing when someone tells me what a nice Chocolate Lab I have. Really, which line of Chocolate Lab has four colors? Which line of Lab produces bushy tails carried in a hook or over the back? Which line of Labs produce short, pointed ears that can stand up?

Here's my Chocolate Lab, or wolf, depending on one's perspective.

My friend's husband clearly prefers my girl over my boy and one time, he was at our house and told my boy 'i hate you'. that really got to me!  Angry

As all bully owners know, one must have a really thick skin to own these wonderful dogs.  I just grit my teeth and try to ignore it, but once in awhile, I get a smart ass answer off at JUST the right moment. I am always pleasantly surprised to see the other party standing there with his/her mouth hanging open in shock. Believe me, I am the MISTRESS of the come back!

    Here's my Chocolate Lab

We get lots of chocolate lab comments apparently chocolate labs come in a nearly black brindle, no undercoat, a long very skinny tail carried straight up and have white spotted chests Geeked

LOL we don't get too many so-called hurtful comments, plenty of dumb ones especially breed guesses (however none as stupid as the 'sheltie' great dane story) We get lots of fearful looks and looks of all out terror - I guess people are too afraid to comment. Surprise

    Re: Hurtful Comments....

People are constantly walking up to me, and calling Ena ugly. To my face. I would think, after almost a month of taking her out every day, I'd be used to it. I'm not. I probably never will be. I adore her, and I think she's beautiful (I've always loved the look of Cresteds!). I can't imagine why anyone would call anybody's dog ugly. I wouldn't call your child ugly!

Lots of folks are scared of Emma, too. People are shocked that she can sit still. One woman saw some photos of her and made a super disgusted face, asking how destructive was she. Emma isn't destructive. She went through a mega chewing phase at a year, but now? Please! She corrected the puppy this morning for chewing the lid of a Gladware.

Yup, I've had people come up to me and tell me that I have, 'the ugliest little dog!'

Huh? Whatever happened to the concept of, 'if you don't have anything NICE to say, don't say anything at all'?

I think most people who say anything negative about a dog due to their breed are not dog lovers really.  They like some dogs and their own dogs but they are not dog advocates.

i dont think this is entirely accurate.  i don't like all people i meet and i dont like all dogs i meet.  it doesn't mean im not a dog advocate Smile  granted i usually have more of a problem with owners than dogs, but i have never professed to like all dogs... that would be rather absurd to me Smile

    Re: Hurtful Comments....

I think that when people make hurtful comments towards a person's dog, or breed of dog, it really hurts because it is like an insult to the person.

I have a toy poodle, and a miniature poodle, and when I say I have poodles, a lot of people say "Oh my god! I hate those dogs! They are so annoying!" and I try not to take it personally, but it feels like a personal attack almost. As if they are trying to say I'm stupid for chosing such an annoying breed.

One day I was in the park with my dogs, and at the time I had given them my first attempt at a grooming, so they looked pretty funny, I'll admit, but nothing too bad. A guy walked by with one georgeous sheltie, and one beautful collie. it was a guy, with what appeard to be his girlfriend. He saw my dogs, and he broke out into hysterical...laughter. He pointed, and laughed, and howled "oh my god! Look at those dogs!" and his girlfriend was like "Honey, they're poodles! They're supposed to look that way!" and he pointed, and laughed hysterically. Saying how he could never have a dog that looks like that, he almost fell on the ground, he had to grab onto his girlfriend for support, and as he walked away, he kept staring at me laughing hysterically.

At school, we groom dogs, and I brought my dogs into be groomed. It was at the start of the year, and the freshman weren't used to there being dogs in the small animal lab. one kid looked in and saw the dogs, and freaked out, saying OH MY GOD! ITS A DOG! (haha. Freshman. By the time they are sophomores, it will be more like aauuuugghhhh another dog!) so a bunch of freshman started coming to the window, and they teacher had to yell at them to sit. They asked if the dogs are cute, and the teacher laughed and said "No!!"

     That one really bothered me.

Sometimes I guess you just have to brush things off your shoulder and move on.

People don't always realize how hurtful their words or gestures are. For example, my mom fears big dogs. whenever a big dog is around, she stands really stiff, and if I'm around, she'll grab me and yell at me under her breath not to move. I however, ignore her, and ask if I can pet the big cutie. Like last week, we went to a "dog park" type of area, its not fenced, but its huge and beautiful, in a valley between some hills where a lot of dogs go. We were going to check it out before taking our dogs there, and two huge dogs, (a great dane, and another greatdane dalmation looking mix) jumped out of a car, my mom was getting down from our car, and she screamed, and jumped back in, slammed the door shut, and rolled up the windows. I didn't see the dogs, so I was like "what!?" and when I saw the dogs I just hopped out of the car and said hello, ignoring her yelling at me to get in the car before the monsters eat me.
