    prednisone side effects

Hi, Chico had surgery 3 weeks ago and he had a mast cell tumor removed (grade 2 with some grade 3 cells) We have decided to give him prednisone and he is acting really drugged up and real tired. was wondering if anybody else has seen these side effect. because the vet is not wanting to keep him on it and just let him go and see if he gets any more tumors. I feel we have to try something, But I cant find any thing about these side effect and the vet said she has never heard of a dog reacting like he is.So please if anybody can help I would like to hear your ideas.

Prednisone can have some pretty serious side effects - including congestive heart failure in susceptible patients.  Has his blood pressure been checked?

Hi -- pred can just plain do WEIRD things.  It can cause some really nasty muscle spasming which can be exhausting and you might not even "see" it happening.  He can just plain feel horrible, bottom line.

Something that worked absolutely superb for us when we had a dog with mast cell (same type of grade) where we *knew* we didn't get clear margins (because there was no more tissue in the area to take)  -- I used a *second* vet who did "TCVM" (traditional Chinese veterinary medicine).

Muffin got acupuncture and some Chinese herbals and we found out later that we actually hadn't gotten the primary tumor at all but what we did with the TCVM battled that unbelievably well.

I'm not suggesting you leave your vet -- not at all.  But rather simply *add* the TCVM to it.  No bad side effects and frankly way cheaper than something like chemo.  Mast cell usually do multiply if unchecked.  But the side effects of pred can be horrific.  http://www.tcvm.com is the Chi Institute and on the left they have a 'locator' that will help you find a competent vet near you.  They aren't going to try to talk you into leaving your vet or anything like that.  It really does help enormously.

Many years ago we had a toy fox terrier that we gave prednizone to for grass allergies. It made him seem, for lack of a better description "stoned"He would stare off into space for long periods of time and often release his bladder. In the end I feel the prednisone hurt him much more than it helped him.I am really sorry to hear about Chico's battle with cancer.Sad

I was on pred when first diagnosed with Rhuematroid arthritis but after learing all the side ffefts, I got off it  It does become addictive and you hae to be weaned off it.  It causes thrist, hence more potty time.

When my golden retriever was on itwith AIHA, he had to take other drugs to keep it from tearing his stomach up.    I do believe it has it's place, but just very short term, an Iwould avoid it if something else a little safer would work.

I called a couple of TCVM vet they arent sure if this will help, because he was abused by his first owner, so they arent sure if he will be able to do any of there treatment, because they think it will cause more stress. ( he doesnt like people very much, it took a while for him to trust us.) they are trying to figure out what would be the best option.
