Does anybody know why? Many dogs have a high pain tolerance and the pain from mace just makes them mad. Maybe I missed something on this thread, but since the mace didn't work, how did you get away from the dog?

To the OP, I am so very sorry that this happened to your daughter--it must have been terrifying!  I have been bitten several times, once badly enough to get 21 stitches.  I've also had dogs come after my dogs on walks, hikes, etc.   Honestly, the amount of damage does not surprise me.  Not every pit that shows aggression is hell bent for leather to rip everything it sees.  Just like every other dog, pits have the capability to control their bit inhibition, force, etc.  Just based on what has been said, what may have happened is that the attacking dog (who was evidently starved-that might have had something to do with it) might have seen you little dog as a prey item.  When your daughter got in the way she was bitten, but the dog likely did not want to do anything more than get her out of the way. Please note that the above interpretation does not make any of it OK, just what might have happened based on what you said. Again, I am so, so sorry that some idiot owner caused your daughter to be harmed.  It is owners like him that give all pittie people a bad name, and make life difficult for their neighbors.  I know that what happened was scary, but I do hope that it does not make you dislike all bully breeds.....    "Some men aren't looking for anything logical. And all of that unconditionally. Like my saying goes. Live each day as if it were your last, look toward the future and not the past. I made that up after 2 back surgeries and it got me through that and it will get me through this. Thank You My Friend

Especially when there is a leash law but to know he was starving his dogs for his own profit (dog fighting). That is just the lowest you can get in my book. And we are doing better now and my daughter is still and will always be my HERO!!!!

  Re: Dog Attack Reply Contact Yes my daughter is on antibiotics and the doctor thought it would be best to close the wound. I am also a CNA but I try to not fight doctors. I am sorry to hear about your ordeal and I hope you are doing better. But since you have gone through this can I ask you for some advice? I am just worried about my daughter I don't want her to fear dogs or any animals due to someone elses neglect.

It happened so fast but we did snatch up Chico by his leash he only weighs 5 pounds so we protected him first. Then my daughter said look out mom and covered me with her body. She is my HERO now and forever.

Thank you very much for all you wrote. I just feel sorry for the pitbulls. Its like with guns if you can't handle one don't get one. God bless you.

We also don't want to be afraid of any dog. And we should not be afraid to walk our dog in our own neighborhood but I think this will take time For us to get over this mentally as well as physically.

  Re: Dog Attack Reply Contact How very scary for you and your daughter and your dog.  I have been at both ends of the spectrum myself, have raised both nice pit bulls and game-bred, abused pit bulls that were beyond rescue and hope.  I have held pups in my arms in the shelter as they were euthanized.  It is a sad state that we as humans have to breed animals to be macho for us, only to have it backfire.  And who suffers the most....the dogs hung from the trees?  The postal workers and children and old ladies getting mauled?  Take Bonita's advice and get your dog, yourself, and your daughter out QUICKLY to some nice areas and dog parks where they can mingle, play and socialize with well behaved dogs.  Try to stay informed on this case but realize it is not your fault whatever may happen to those dogs, it's the owners'...please make sure your daughter realizes that too.   Perhaps, if nothing else, you two have helped the police open up more info on a dog fighting ring in the area.  Shutting that down would at least be something good come from all of this.   Re: Dog Attack Reply Contact wow! how scary! i'm glad you guys werent hurt more seriously... from the sound of it, your daughter is dealing with it very well. i think it is normal to be nervous around bigger dogs for a while, and some of it is healthy, IMO. socialize your dog, your daughter and yourself with some nice bigger dogs (i understand with a chi, you need to be extra cautious about the HUGE size differences..). it'll do you all some good. what happened to the dogs of this guy? do you know? IMO they should be taken from him. they might not have much of a chance at a shelter, honestly, but it seems to me their life now is pretty miserably as is, and on top of that they are posing a risk for anyone in your neighbourhood... If some of our member have seemed overly sensitive about the loose term "pit bull" it is only because many attacks have been blamed on pit bulls even when it wasnt one at all. Obviously the breed dosnt need any more negative critisicm then it already has and this forum is made up of a bit of loving "pit bull" owners including myself. Keep in mind "pit bull" is not a breed, it is a genaralization. Many responsible owners throughout the country have had their dogs ripped out of their homes due to BSL-breed specific legislation which calls for many "pit bull" type dogs to be banned. So I apologize if some of us tend to take this topic to heart.....myself included. In no way whatsoever should our personal feelings toward the breed effect or dilute the horrible attack you suffered. I don't know how long you have been on this forum but I can assure you we are all typically a caring, loving group of people and I hope despite this incident you will continue to post and share your experiences with us as I can only assume the after effects of this incident will last awhile. I for one am thankul you havnt written off the breed as a whole, I will always continue to defend my favored breed, the true American Pit Bull Terrier. I also due my best to not allow my love of the breed to get in the way of reality or common sense and if sometimes my passion for the APBT makes me fly off the handle I am sorry. I am only human.....as are all of us. I hope you and your family heal quickly

German Shepherd and Labs are usually correctly identified. Labs and German Shepherds don't constantly get wrongly accused of dog attacks. There aren't as many myths about viciousness and locking jaws and whatever else in those breeds as in "pit bulls", which isn't even a breed, but a type. So yes, the validity "a pit bull attacked me!" is generally more questionable than "a German Shepherd attacked me!" Chelsea &
