New Disney Movie - Beverly Hills Chihuahua

My DW and I went to see Prince Caspian last night and we saw a preveiw for this new movie. Here is the link to the official Web Site.

While DW and I will NOT see this movie I think it is going to cause issues for breaders.

Ahh that preview was cute. But what is the movie about exactly? And now my daughter wants to watch the movie with "all them Kujo's" she said. Good thing it dont come out for a while.

And that is sad what trouble a dog movie like that can cause for the breed of dog used in it.

Ahh, I wanna see it too. I love to see lots of cute chihuahuas. It's hardly disney's fault that people are stupid. Should they stop making movies with any sort of pets in them just because people may/will be irresponsible. I think given what happened with 101 dalmations (I know all too well because I had two dalmation rescues from that time hee hee) there should be more aggressive work on the side of breeders etc. to educate the public. Although I clearly have grown to love chi's (which are a new breed for me over the last year and a half), they are definately not for everyone.

Agree - 100%.  What I would love to see is  the animal groups (HSUS, SPCA etc.) come out strongly cautioning people NOT to get a certain breed of animal only because there was a movie made about it.  It seems like there's enough time to do this between the time the trailers start coming out and the time the movie actually opens.

There is always a lot of info about researching before getting a dog yu saw on TV or a movie. In some cases movies have caused issues with impluse buying but not in every case. I tend to think the reaction on internet forums to any new dog movie (OMG! This is going to cause "overbreeding" of dogs!) is often a bit over the top. Chis are already really popular anyways.

I personally don't want HSUS attempting to educate people on any matter ;)

JMHO, but when breeds were hotly populatized by Disney and similar movies years back, we did not have the information that we do now, right at our fingertips. We also had good breeders that were not as aware of the issue, and overall did not screen buyers the same way, did not have limited registration contracts, etc. Breeders seem to be more organized now - five minutes after Uno won I was on the phone with my breed mentor and the subject of popularity & unfit buyers came up almost immediately. What I got a sense of in my breed, at least, was breeders banding together and erecting the proverbial brick wall with the influx of buyers that began flooding breeders with inquiries. I think there is such an awareness in the breeder's corner now, and moreover, many of the buyers that would have made impules buys now have resources on the internet & are making more informed decisions. There will always be impulse buyers and unscrupulous breeders who are ready to sell to them, but I think it's becoming less of an issue with purebred dog crazes stemming from movies or TV shows.

Just wanted to add that HSUS, ASPCA, & the like really have no involvement in the world of purebred dogs, and the more they stay out of our business, the better ...

It looks pretty cute, like it may go into teh history of the Chihuahua.

That is cute. And I may see it. But it does worry me about how popular the breed is going to get. *dances along to the song* And I like the song. Lol.

And it doesn't help that I do want a Chi in the future. Lol.

Maybe I'm mistaken but aren't chihuahuas already popular?  They are all over the media anyway and have been for quite a while.  I mean, maybe they'll experience a little spike but I hardly think it will reach crisis proportions.  There are puppy mills and byb's pumping out chis all over the place as it is.

Re: New Disney Movie - Beverly Hills Chihuahua

I think that people have a responsibility to not need every organization in the world telling them that getting a dog on impulse based on what you see in a movie (because really, for heaven's sake, look at what dogs are doing in movies...it's rarely realistic at all.) isn't a bright idea.

And yes, Chis are already popular. Half of the dogs brought in to be checked for oops pregnancies are Chis, because god forbid people spay or neuter their family petsHuh?  A lady was selling Chi puppies outside the grocery store last week, and when someone questioned her, she indignantly stated that she 'breeds Chihuahuas' she 'knows what she's doing'Tongue Tied

Re: New Disney Movie - Beverly Hills Chihuahua

Well - I guess I'm not going to see that movie!  (I am OP's DW).

Having seen the preview in the theatre and hearing other's reactions to it...

    1) I don't think the true Chi is represented well in this movie

    2) A lot of people thought it was "really cute"

The chi is small and cute but it needs to be treated, trained and loved like the dog that it is.  What concerns me is that folks who see this movie will think that the Chi they are buying in the parking lot (see post above) will be like the dogs in the movie.

Re: New Disney Movie - Beverly Hills Chihuahua

I'm excited to see this as well - there is a new trailer out that explains a bit more what the movie is about and it looks like it'll be a lot of fun.

Regarding films such as these encouraging audiences to get pets, while it most certainly is a concern of mine, you cannot blame the studios for producing movies about animals! It's up to owners, future owners and breeders to take responsibility for their actions. Please don't think I'm being unsympathetic, I just hate to think dog-lovers who would otherwise love to see their favorite breed celebrated have to worry about situations like this. It's just sad!

And whether folks pay attention or not, Disney DOES put disclaimers out there regarding pet ownership. At least they are recognizing the issue...

Lol, I saw that preview the other day. I like the part when the one male dog is next to the female, and he's like, "Jealous?". But I won't be seeing it either. It could be cute I guess, but I'm not a chihuahua person at all. I'm excited for Marley & Me - gimme a big goofy dog instead! : P

Re: New Disney Movie - Beverly Hills Chihuahua

I posted about this exact concern a couple of weeks ago and the two responses were that "Chi's are already popular, so, therefore, the movie will have no effect."

I strongly disagree and would bet money that we will see a huge spike in the sale of this breed. Sadly, these dogs are NOT for everyone. Keep in mind that the movie will draw lots of kids begging mommy and daddy for "a cute puppy like that!" And mommy and daddy will oblige, cuz that's what a lot of people do (even though they can't afford other necessities in life, trust me, I've seen it and in the end the dog suffers....especially when the novelty wears off AND IT WILL) There is no question that this is one of the more popular breeds, but the intense attention that a movie like this will bring to the breed, will no doubt have the same effect that 101 Dalmations had on that breed (another dog that requires a certain type of owner who fully understands the personality and energy demands that they have).

But, there are lots of breeders, backyard or otherwise, who will and are probably already cranking out those puppies in anticipation of the strong demand for them. It's all about the $$, right....... UGH! I will NOT be seeing the movie and I pray to god that they never make a movie about my dog's breeds!!!
