Any suggestions on things to get

I've been diagnosed as a diabetic.  I went to the nutritionist yesterday and got some information and now I need to go grocery shopping.  Problem is...I don't *know* food.  Like, I know green beans, corn and what have you, but when you start talking anything more *exotic* I'm lost.  I'm also not real creative in coming up with stuff to make/eat.

So....according to the nutritionalist I can have between 45-60g carbs 3x a day.  I like to have stuff I can munch on and I *know* I'm gonna get bored w/ carrots (he said they were a 'free' food, meaning I can have as many as a want).  I'm also not a good cook (actually a rarely cook at all) so simple is really good for me.

I'm probably gonna go to the store tonight or tomorrow and look at a million labels, but any help/suggestions from you guys is totally appreciated.

    TIA

Oh yea....if you think there is even the *slightest* chance I might not know what your talking about, you're probably right, so could if you tell me WHERE (ie. the soup asile, the veggie aisle, etc.) to find it, that would be great

    Here are some random suggestions:

Cold cereal and low or nonfat milk. Go for the hippie cereals (Kashi is a good brand)
Whole Wheat or Whole Grain breads and crackers and healthy Deli meats for lunch
    Salads
    Fruits and vegetables

This is a good page with MANY links to recipes, etc.

Corn is very carby (particularly for a veg).

Hummus -- it's easy to make and there are a zillion recipes online and easy to tweak to make it how YOU want it.  Then you don't have to put it on pita (altho that's nice and very filling) BUT it's superb on cut up raw veggies of almost any variety -- it can turn into an easy 'snack' food because you can store it but pull it out and dip into it really easy.

We were talking about ice cream?  Get a blender or food processor that is strong enough to crush ice and you can satisfy a craving for something cold and sweet just by adding a little bit of OJ, or ANY fruit.

I'm not a diabetic, but I would focus on whole grains, pref. 100% whole wheat...whole wheat bread, tortillas, crackers, etc.

oatmeal, lean meats, fruits, veggies ( i especially love roasted asparagus)...

stay away from "starchy", sugary or processed things. Corn is pretty starchy.

good suggestion for a snack-- Kashi crunchy granola bar, honey toasted 7 grain. They have 4 g of fiber and 6 g of protein.

4IC thanks for the link, I've saved it....bunch of recipes I'll have to look at....maybe I can use the ingredient lists to help make a shopping list

Callie - great ideas!  And thanks to you and David, I know what Hummus is now!  Putting in veggies....great!  Hadn't thought about it like that (Gee...did I mention I'm not creative) and the ice cream alternative would be good at nice, when I start craving something sweet.

Thanks for the ideas so far Big Smile

Ooh, sounds good, I'll look for that.

BTW everyone, I did know corn was a starchy veg, I just named it to give example of the few veggies I know.  I rarely eat corn anyway b/c my stomach doesn't seem to like it as much as my tastebuds do.

If you need some veggie ideas...

I love roasted asparagus, lima beans, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, and broccoli.

Another good side dish is whole grain brown rice or 100% whole wheat couscous instead of white rice

Ridgeback and I think alike. Wink

I put asparagus in a glass dish, sprinkle it with olive oil, add pepper, garlic powder, and chipotle powder (for a kick), mix it up and bake at 375 for about 20 minutes! Yum!

You can also add frozen peas and matchstick carrots and raisins to couscous...

Re: Any suggestions on things to get

We have actually had a thread about this subject recently.  http://community.dog.com/forums/p/75200/585342.aspx#585342

My mother was recently diagnosed with diabetes 2.  I would think that the diet is close to the same for all of them.

I found a cookbook that I really like that has a lot of great recipes in it.  Trim & Terrific Diabetic Cooking by Holly Cleg.  I have found some new favorites in it and the recipes are all really quick and easy as well as very low calories so it meets all my needs.  I love this cookbook b/c the recipes in it are so incredibly quick and easy and have all been really good.  Most of them have shortcuts that don't even require chopping or cooking.  You can just buy and pour things together.  I just ordered two more of her books yesterday!  I think a lot of people said the South Beach Diet had a lot of diabetic friendly foods as well.

I was given a few cookbook recomendations from a friend who also has type 2 diabetes.  Here is what she wrote to me:

the one i showed y'all was better homes diabetic
living cookbook.  there is also a cook book i like
called "you can eat that!" awesome food for kids with
diabetes...because even though it is for kids, it has
great recipes in it!  there is also a book called
"instead of this, eat that" that was featured on
ellen's show the other day that i can't wait to get.
it tells you about certain foods at restaurants and
what the calorie, fat, carb, etc. intake is so you can
make better choices.  it looks really good.  hope that
    helps!

Stir fry can be your friend! If you are leery of "exotic" veggies, just grab a bag of stir fry veggies from the frozen aisle.  Make some brown rice, and (if you're not a vegetarian), cut up a bit of meat and add a scrambled egg or two.  Add some low sodium soy sauce and violá--a yummy dinner that's cheap and good for you!

I have to say that I *love* Holly Clegs Trim and Terrific Diabetic Cooking that is metioned above. It is a great, great cookbook. I also really like the All Natural Diabetes Cookbook, by Jackie Newgent.

Here is a list of "free veggies"

    asparagus

    bean sprouts

    beet green

    broccoli

    Brussels sprouts

    cabbage

    cauliflower

    celery

    cucumber

    green peppers

    lettuce

    marrow

    mushrooms

    onions (1/2 cup)

    orange peppers

    parsley

    radishes

    red peppers

    rhubarb

    spinach

    Swiss chard

    tomato (only 1)

    yellow or green beans

    zucchini

One of my favorite things to do is eat a big big salad. Sometimes I throw a little whole wheat penne into the salad to add some substance. A general rule is if you pair lots of veggies (fiber) with your carbs or sugars, it slows the release of the sugars into your bloodstream, therefore not causing a spike. I love pairing whole wheat pasta with veggies as a side, too. For example, asparagus and snow peas are really delicious mixed with whole wheat penne, garlic, onion, and olive oil.
