Re: Salmonella linked to dry dog food

From what I understand (correct me if I'm wrong), dogs are routinely exposed to and carry salmonella. I know when I was researching raw diets this was discussed a lot. Although there was some disagreement, in general salmonella was considered low risk for health issues in dogs. As indicated by the articles it is more a human health risk that can be transferred from your dog. So as with everything we need to make a judgement based on  risk factor vs benefit.

Denise, that is my understanding, as well.  What I find more interesting about this, is that even dry commercial food carries a risk of salmonella.  I feed a raw diet, and I find that many anti-raw feeders bring up the issue of salmonella contamination as a big reason not to feed raw. It's not something I generally worry about, though.

From what I read it isn't the dogs that have the problem, their systems can handle it generally, it is the families involved that live with the pets.

Handling the dry food and not washing your hands they said or little kids who touch the food and then put fingers in their mouths.  More food safety issues now to deal with!
