    Re: Hands up bookworms.

I will read anything words! Honest! Lol.

My all time fav writers are Anne Rice, Ann Rule and Laruel K. Hamilton.

I love vampire novels or anything to do with the supernatural. That being said, I also like murder mysteries and books set in Egypt. I've got one series, thou I can't remember the writer off hand, who wrote a 3 book trilogy set in Ancient  Egypt called the Lord of Two Lands. I found the first book at a book sale in the mall and the name just had me wondering, The Hippopotamus Marsh. It is a highly good read! And I'm a Harry Potter FIEND! Lol

I'm also a sucker for dime store romances and Nora Roberts. A sad obsession passed down from my mother to me. Lol!

There's another good trilogy out there, sci fi, but for the life of me I can't remember the name! Gah! Oh well. I'll think of it later tonight.

I've just started a new series about the life of Genghis Khan called Wolf of the Plains by Conn Iggulden. Good read. I just hate waiting for the next installment!

I also read Shakespeare's plays just for fun. I love the looks I get while sitting in a cafe reading "King Lear"  Lol.

And this thread has added many more books on my list to find and read! Lol! Thanks!

    Re: Hands up bookworms.

I read voraciously at times and just steadily the rest of the time.  I'm always reading more than one book, don't use bookmarks and am sometimes reading 5 at a time!  Ann Rice (early novels anyway) is my guilty pleasure.  One of my favorite books of all time is The Once and Future King by TH White.  I love all Arthurian stuff (well, not really the pop novels, but Malory, etc.).  Favorite authors, Thomas Hardy, Charles Dickens, Toni Morrison, Umberto Eco....and many others.

Recent books I read and loved are Kafka on the Shore, A Death in Venice, and A Thousand Splendid Suns.

Marlania, you've reminded me how much I liked We and that I really should read it again!

Oh, yeah.  And though I don't really go in that much for the fantasy genre, I have read all of the LOTR and The Hobbit about 25 times.  The Silmarillion a few times, too.  And Harry Potter twice.

    Re: Hands up bookworms.

Me, me!  I love books, I have always loved books, I will always love books.  Books are what I disappeared into when I was younger and was upset about this or that.  Books helped me learn how to fantasize.  :)

When I was younger my favorites were the Fudge books by Judy Blume, Trixie Belden, The Babysitter Club books (who didn't read these?? lol)

Now, I will also read anything put in front of me, but my favorites are romances, suspense, young adult fantasy, some types of non-fiction, fiction novels.

My favorite authors are Nora Roberts, JK Rowling, James Patterson, Michael Crighton, Catherine Anderson, Julie Garwood, Dorothy Garlock, Linda Howard, Karen Robards.  I will buy books, but I resell them or donate them.  I do keep favorites because I will re-read and re-read.  I especially love Nora Roberts trilogies.  Some of her books have a supernatural, magical, fantasy theme to them.  Some of my fav. trilogies are the Key trilogy, Circle trilogy, Three Sisters trilogy, and The Irish trilogy.  I have read all the Harry Potter books many times.  I am in the process of reading The Chronicles of Narnia.  I like going back and reading classic books that I should have read in high school, but perhaps was not in the class that was reading that particular book.

I also read anywhere and everywhere.  I am reading two books right now and are ready to start a third.  I don't do it as much now because my age won't allow it, but when I was younger I would stay up all night reading.  :)

    Chuffy:
    Who loves books?

I do!!!! Books are one of those things I would have a hard time living without, I read every single day and cannot recall a day that I have not read.

    Chuffy:
    What's your fave ever book?

That is difficult to say, I love sci-fi, fantasy, horror, historical fiction, fiction, non fiction and within all of those categories rests several favorites.

Lord of the Rings would have to be one of my favorite fictional books. This one needs no introduction since the movies came out.

Corrie Ten Boom's "The Hiding Place" would have to be one of the best meaningful books. it gives account of WWII and her experience inside a concentration camp.

Shake Hands With the Devil was another profound book that I shall never forget, it is about the massacre in Rwanda.

    Chuffy:
What book are you reading right now?

    1632 by Eric Flint

    Chuffy:
What book(s) would you like to read?

Any and all books worth reading. What drives me crazy in book stores is the fact that there are so many books to choose from, and surely some of them are wonderful and yet I may never choose to pick up that book and thus I will miss the joy of reading it.

I do intend to pick up a copy of the Kite Runner this weekend. I watched the movie and enjoyes it very much,

    Chuffy:
Right now I am reading some books by George R R Martin.

Aye, George Martin is wonderful although I am upset at him and refuse to read any of his new material until he completes the final book in his Song of Fire and Ice series. Amazon has it listed at last! The date is 9/30/08! I am scared George will die before he finishes it as he seems to be involved with running about the world getting involved in all kinds of new adventures and failing to work on his final book. If it were up to me I would lock him in a room and not let him out until he finishes it. I bet he is grateful that it is not up to me!

    Re: Hands up bookworms.

I have recently finished the Flashman series.  Wow but they were some good books!  Anyone who likes historical stuff, should give those a whirl.

I read the Harry Potter series a few times.  I was completely floored by the story telling.

I also like some of the Anne Rice novels and anything Arthurian.

NO -- tooooooooooooooo long.  I have a friend who loves her stuff, and despite the fact that I'm married to a Scot and LOVE Scots historical romances, I just can't get into it.

If a book spans too much time or if it's 500 - 600 pages it's usually more than I want to lug around.  Shoot -- it took me forever to read the last Harry Potter because I left it in the bathroom to read because it was too heavy to tote around!!

    Re: Hands up bookworms.

To call me a bookworm doesn't even begin to describe it, lol Geeked  Have always been hopelessly addicted to the written word ... in fact ... I am a writer myself, although I have very little interest in publishing most of my work. I only write fantasy in one form or another, mainly high fantasy but some has a sci fi or contemporary horror edge to it - and probably 90% of what I read is high fantasy. I grew up on and have been influenced by Stephen King, J.R.R. Tolkien, Robin McKinley & Anne Rice (Memnoch would have to be my favorite and inspired the writing style I still use to this day). Nowadays, I'm hooked on J.K. Rowling (this is a shameless addiction, so so shameless) and Jim Butcher. Other favorites would have to be C.S. Lewis, Michael Ende, Peter S. Beagle, Terry Brooks ... and yes, seriously, Shakespeare Smile

The last book I read was Intensity by Dean Koontz. I've never really been into Koontz & this certainly wasn't one of his newer works, but it was an excellent read. One work that was undoubtedly worthy of it's title! Hope to get my hands on another Dresden File novel very soon ...

         My favorite indivigual books are:

    The Hobbit

    Where the Red Fern Grows

    To Kill A Mockingbird

    A Dog's Life

    The Hero & the Crown

    Animal Farm

    Glory and the Lightning

    The Picture of Dorian Grey

    The Red Badge of Courage

    Re: Hands up bookworms.

I found the first one of Gabaldon's to be a bit much, heavy on the sadistic and although I loved the historical part of it some of the scenes put me off a bit, but I muddled through it and I really enjoyed the rest in the series. I tried her latest book but did not really like it like I did the Jamie and Claire series.

    calliecritturs:

Oh I love the long books if they are good!!!! One of the most difficult parts of being a bookworm (IMO) is when you get towards the end and you realize that the book is almost done, you are thankful that this one was such a great read, fearful that the next one you pick up might be a disappointment and hopeful that it will not be too long until you pick up another one that you can classify as "awesome"!

I just inhaled “The Kite Runner”, and I must say it is a great book. It shows how those little moments in life, where you stand at a crossroad of decision, can change your life and your outlook forever and the outcome of that change depends entirely on how you choose. It is also a tale of redemption and love. Great book!

    Re: Hands up bookworms.

I am always reading. And trying to learn new things or at least remember old things.

My favorite author is Robert A. Heinlein. I have read everything he has written at least once and some quite a bit more often than once. Three of his stories have been made into movies. "Destination Moon" (back in the 1950's) and more recently, "Starship Troopers" and "Puppetmasters." Of course, the last few years I have read several books involving dogs. One of the more recent books I read was on Astronomy with various star charts. I needed a refresher since DW had bought me a telescope for Valentine's Day. I've read westerns, I have read math books. I have read "MacBeth" and "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." "A Tale of Two Cities" and "Candid." I have read most everything by Mark Twain.

Having the internet to read different studies and papers is a blast, too. But there's something about having a book in your hand.

*raises hand*  Me too!!! There's nothing I love better than picking up a book I've been waiting to read and seeing that it's a good 600/700 pages long. That way, I know it will last awhile.  It's almost a disappointment to discover it's only 300 or so pages long and know I'll probably finish it over a weekend.

    Re: Hands up bookworms.

Interesting -- I'm really heartened to see how many of us read OLD stuff.  New stuff is always good as well, but it seems in recent years everyone seems to emphasize (especially to kids) that they have to read 'new' ... and the classic stuff goes unappreciated.

I was shocked to my toes the other day in a radio trivia question (sort of a "Smart as a Fifth Grader" kind of thing) "Who wrote A Midsummer's Night's Dream?"  ONLY ONE PERSON knew the answer was Shakespeare.  They all guessed complex old author names but I can't believe only one adult person knew that.

I keep giggling to myself -- just wait until kids figure out that the Hobbit isn't just the pre-quel to LOTR, but it's about ....

    DRAGONS!!!!!! *giggle*

    Re: Hands up bookworms.

Oooh, I am now on to "FEAST FOR CROWS" (the George R R Martin series I mentioned) and so far I am not enjoying it QUITE as much as the previous books in the series.... but I am still enjoying it a lot.  The others I read voraciously (bally good word that, thank you) and I was just thankful when I got to the end that there was another book to pick up straight after it.  After this one though, we have to wait till NOVEMBER till the next book comes out and even longer (May '09) if we want the paperback copy to go with the rest.... AAARRRGGHHH!!!  I love long books, as long as they are GOOD.  I love reading and reading and reading and because I'm dying to know what happens next, but it's not TOO quick until I get that - "oh, no, I'm nearly done with this one" feeling.  I'll be honest, I liked The  Hobbit but I struggled through LOTR.... WAY too tedious, sorry!
