organs and body parts, some questions

     OK just went to the new Compare store which is a heavily hispanic influenced grocery and still don't really know what is OK to feed or good to feed or not worth it so;

    • pig's tails - looked to be some meat on it
    • goat meat chunks with some bone in
    • beef sweetbread (pancreas I believe)
    • pig's feet
    • beef tripe (pics attached)
    • beef neck bones - in chunks, didn't see whole bone
    • kidney

They had raw beef pizzle too (and bull testicles)

tripe pictures - two different types - look away now if you are not interested

Re: organs and body parts, some questions

Oh, you dog - I can only get there about once a month and I always miss the good stuff.  I've been looking for pancreas for forever!

All of it is good.  The goat meat tends to be bony, or at least when I get it, it is.  They label all digestive parts as "tripas" - when in fact sometimes it's intestine rather than stomach (as in the beef tripe you have there).  It is all washed and bleached if needed, so as far as the classic benefits of "Green" tripe - nada.  But it's still good cartilage and protein.  Cartilage provides GAGs (glycosaminoglycans) a precursor of chondroitin.  I feed it to my oldsters in raw form whenever possible.

Pigs feet are quite bony but also full of good cartilage and some skin, which provides selenium (small amounts, since most pigs are raised too fast in confinement to uptake significant mineral amounts).  For a real hoot, get those whole cow feet - they always have them split frozen.  Super cheap and hours of fun for my gang.  Bugsy will take at least five or ten minutes with them, but again, similar benies to the pigs feet.

I try to incorporate about 20% goat into Ben's diet, because it is raised on grass for the most part and locally grown.  It can be pricey but I watch for sales and stock up.

Happy sale watching!  Their flyer is online - just google Compare foods.

ETA:  For some reason the first pic did not load the first time.  That is the reticulum, which is tripe in the sense we know it, but it is bleached.  Same as I said above applies to it.  It is largely protein.

careful with the beef neck bones- my gang swallows them then pukes them up, the bone doesn't seem to be very digestible. Pig and lamb neck bones are great though.

Re: organs and body parts, some questions

thanks both of you - they said they had pork neckbones but I didn't see any - will keep my eye out

are the bones in the goat meat OK?  They seem pretty small not sure if the beast would bother chewing them

I did see the beef feet but as you say they are split that is OK?

how much pancreas do you feed?  Is it just an extra?

is the kidney of any value?

Becca seeing as you have your own livestock I'm not sure you get to be jealous but this new store is about 3 miles from me.  They took over an old Winn Dixie.  The produce was very good, the meat/offal selection wasn't fully stocked and when I asked about beef liver (on sale for .98/lb) the person in the meat dept. didn't seem to be able to get me a lb of it,  just what was out.  LOL there were several older ladies that were looking at lots of stuff and had settled in front of the beef testicles and penises (not sure of the plural there) and asked if I knew what they were - when I told them they couldn't stop laughing/giggling.  Anyway I am excited as I have been looking for somewhere to get some of this for a reasonable price.

Candace, have you checked fresh options near you?  Farmers' markets, direct from the farm programs and the like?  The ag agent for your area should know something, I'd think.

I've never had a problem with the split cow feet but sometimes they have them whole, too.  Don't think, "hooves" - this is the whole joint from the fetlock down.  Lots of crunchable parts and it doesn't smell like a hoof does.

They tend to cut those beef neckbones big at my Compare.  The goat bones are 100% digestible just like lamb - they are really "kid" meat.

Is there something special about pancreas that other organs dont have? This is one i have never thought to ask the butcher for.Maybe i should try it.

True.  Heh, heh, I hadn't even really thought how that sounded.  I grew up petless and a city girl - there's no way I'd ever have imagined any circumstances under which I'd experience "Pancreas Envy."

It's just for variety.  I'm limited to kidney and liver basically unless I've put an animal of my own in the freezer.  Very rarely, they'll have things like stomach and lung and other oddball things at places like Compare - or at least the one near me.  I've heard tell they have brain and chicken feet there regularly, but I've never seen them myself.  Crying

I didn't see either at this one but you can get chicken feet at the Chinese supermarket - they have a whole slew of different stuff than Compare - some of which is just, well, stunning Tongue Tied

WOW! two dollars for tripe, not a bad price. I use to go to Just Save in Kannapolis which is now Compare Foods. Maybe I'll stop by there and see what they have.

I normally get me meats from Rocky River Foods, and Cruse Meats.

My dogs don't like kidney. Also, it smell like urine.

My local Food Lion will order frozen chicken feet for me. Everybody LOVES them, and they make for great picture-taking opportunities.

That is the funniest picture I have ever seen in my life!  It looks like that little dog just ate an entire chicken whole and is just swallowing the last bit....hahahahahaha

Re: organs and body parts, some questions

Kidney is one of the few natural animal based sources of Vitamin C.  It's got nearly ten times as much as liver.  though still not much if your dog needs C for something else (age, joint degeneration, immune issues, recovery etc).  Kidney also has twice as much Vitamin D and Thiamin.  Kidney is also one of the most important sources of selenium from animal sources, with 100 grams (about what I feed Ben daily) of kidney providing on average four times as much as liver does, and about twice what the skin from an entire chicken would.

On the other hand, if you depended on liver alone for organ meat, you'd be exposing your dog to six times the amount of Vitamin A.  It's a natural complex and won't harm your dog, but I dislike the idea of unneccesarily overworking the body to break down excesses.

Pancreas is nice because it offers a very balanced mineral profile that doesn't risk over or undersupplying anything over time.  Except calcium of course.  It's also an extremely good source of that Holy Grail of prey model feeders, B12 (brain is another major source).  Liver has it beat, but there's a ton of copper in liver not to mention the Vitamin A.

Becca I find all this fascinating and intimidating - I suppose it's the main reason I can't pull myself away from kibble.  But I am trying Embarrassed

If I were making a meal that was 1000kcal how much organ would I add? So kidney or pancreas would be better than liver?  Ignore me if I'm a nuisance

BTW I went back and they didn't have any cow's feet but I got some pig's feet and gave him one yesterday.  Being the silly boy he is he sniffed it and licked it and sat next to it for a while.  He actually waited until after he ate his dinner and then he crunched away for a couple of minutes licked his lips and burped three times.

God love him Stick out tongue

Emma gets brain, liver, lung, kidney, etc. I haven't found any pancreas. I wish  I could, because I suspect that her pancreas could use a boost (and Chinese medicine says "like helps like"). A variety of organs is best. Depending on liver, alone, means that you don't get the same nutrients, and you may end up with excess vit a.
