Re: GAS!!! How much does it cost where you live?

I am sooooo freaking glad that I got gas yesterday while it was still at $3.67.  TODAY it is at $3,84.  Crap.

There are an awful lot of folks in MI who have barely over minimum wage jobs and in this area, you go where you can work.  I can't imagine that they can continue to afford to work when so much of their pay check is going into the gas tank.

Yup, we're up around 1.38/liter.  So ya, 5 bucks a gallon... sucks to be me.

It has been just under $4 a gallon in most of our city, but the other day I got into a crunch  on the way to the mountians and had to pay $4.23

$5.00!!  Oh my goodness...Today, in my neck of the woods $3.49/gallon.  And, every time I go to the Bay Area and see $4.00 and over, I think that is bad.

I heard a financial speaker the other day who was saying "Enjoy this cheap gas folks, because next year this time, we may be seeing the gas prices in the $6.00 range."

I really want to at least get a Hybrid, but I don't want a note right now.  Hmmm...may not be that big of a difference: between filling the gas tank vs. a monthly note.  Huh?

Re: GAS!!! How much does it cost where you live?

I call DH the "Town Crier," because every night when he comes through the door, he announces what the gas price was at the station he passed on his way TO work, and what it was when he passed it on his way HOME.  Believe it or not, it changes by a cent or two most days.  He's obsessed with gas prices.  I couldn't tell you what the exact price is -- it's around $3.60 or so.

The bottom line is I need to put gas in my car regardless, so I try not to focus on the actual price (I have enough anxiety!).  I do what I can to conserve in ways that I can control:  I plan my errands to coincide with my route from work, I try to keep my speed consistent, no heavy-footed "take-offs," etc.  My car is just OK when it comes to MPG, so I'm grateful that my office is less than 10 miles from my house, and I don't do as much driving as many people do.  I figure if I were really concerned, I'd take the bus to work or buy a more fuel efficient car.  At some point, it may come to that, but for now I just get my reports from the Town Crier, and thank him for the daily report!

Re: GAS!!! How much does it cost where you live?

Down here its $1.88/litre for 91 unleaded and $2.09/litre for the premium (or something like that). They've been talking about petrol getting up to $3/litre here Sad.

Tacran-your DH sounds like me! I always keep an eye on the petrol prices, so that I can fill up when it's a few cents cheaper LOL.

I would love to be able to take a bus to work.  But I live 45 minutes away and the town I live in doesn't have a bus system, except one a few years ago, which was actually a guy who drove his van around and picked people up and dropped them off places lol.

    It's very frustrating!

DH and I need another car, and I was thinking of getting a camry hybrid, but my bil says that the batteries cost 4k, so I'm not sure if by the time I work in the extra cost of the hybrid plus maitenance it will make sense.

I filled up yesterday and it cost me $3.89 for premium. My little subaru legacy is costing me $55 dollars to fill.

I think it was $3.80 when I filled up the other day? My county has a ridiculous gas tax so when I go out of the county, I always fill up.

Having done all the necessary conversions.....about $8.50 a gallon.

Be glad you don't live in the UK, folks.

I was waiting for you to chime in, Kate.  As bad as we think we have it with gas prices, we're lucky to have been paying relatively low prices for so long.  Europe has always had higher prices than in the States.

A weird thing happened to DH the other day.  He was filling up his gas guzzler.  He has to use premium on it.  He was pumping away & the pump stopped @ $50.  It said that he had reached his limit????  ~puzzled~

Re: GAS!!! How much does it cost where you live?

Thanks Kate for keeping it in perspective.

I am going to calculate how much it is costing me to get to work and home. I want to see if I can work from home 2 days a week. I will find out how much it went up tonight. Our gas station is usually cheaper than most. I saw a highway station this AM on my way in at $3.89.

We use DH's Ford Focus for most of our running around. It gets better mileage than my Explorer. We thought about a hybrid but we do mostly highway driving so it would not save us much because then it is running on gas.

No kidding!  However we are having this discussion on another board and in both places I think cost of living/wages should be taken into account.  We had some Irish people on the other board not realizing their minimum wage is TWICE as much as the minimum wage in the USA, so yeah it figures petrol will cost more.  Like Glenda was saying, in Michigan a lot of people ARE only making minimum wage.  We have the worst economy, worst housing market, and highest unemployment rates of the country, so people can't be picky and choosy about their jobs and location at the moment.  Bleh.
