    HELP! Inducing Vomiting! (lmichelle)

Zack ate a chunk off a cob of corn about 15 minutes ago.  I know that according to a post about peroxide that it's 2 tsp per 30 lbs every 15 minutes, but how many doses should I give?  I haven't given him any yet.

    Please any help!!

I wouldn't give more than 3.  You will probably induce vomiting after one.

How big a chunk?  It really ought not be a problem -- he's not going to get nutritional 'good' from it, but it will break down easily in the body if it doesn't come up -- I wouldn't worry about it seriously -- it *might* obstruct but probably not.  Corn cobs tend to be irresistible to a lot of dogs so if it doesn't come up don't stress over it.

You might also want to send someone to a drug store for Syrup of Ipecac, but I can't tell you the dosage for that.  Syrup of Ipecac is what doctors usually recommend for inducing vomiting in children.

I gave him 4 tsp, he is 80lbs, and he threw it up on his third gag, he isn't throwing up anymore, and he is drinking.  It was a very large piece he ate.

I just read peroxide should be mixed with water, is this true?

I guess I worry more about corn cobs than Callie.  The newspaper article below talks about a Chesapeake Bay Retriever that died when a small piece of sweet corn cob, about one inch in diameter, blocked her stomach.

In that case the owners did not know about the corn cob until it was removed.  By that time the dog was too ill to survive.

Part of the delay in determining that dog's problem was that corn cobs do not show up in X-rays.

Yikes!!!  That is scary!!  I am glad Zack got it up

Is there anything I should do now for him?  Was the peroxide supposed to be mixed with water when I gave it to him?

    Me, too!!  Hurray!

Something gentle like rice might make his stomach feel better.

    Not that I know of.

I suggest that now you relax, pour yourself a glass of wine Drinks and tell us how Zack (naughty boy) managed to get a hold of a corn cob. Smile

lol my elbow knocked it off the plate and as I went to grab it, zack grabbed it and hebit a chunk off while i was trying to get it off of him, and he swallowed the chunk before i could get it out of his mouth.

I don't think I have ever been as frantic as I was this evening!!

    Re: HELP! Inducing Vomiting! (lmichelle)

You were frantic, but you kept your head and did what needed to be done.  That is all you can ask of yourself in an emergency.

Sounds like the "leave it" and "drop it" commands should be high priority now!

One forum member tried to get her dog away from a multi-pronged fish hook and failed.  The dog swallowed the hook and had to have surgery.  In that case inducing vomiting was not an option.

Glad he's OK now!  It was good that you saw him get it so you knew what you were dealing with before it became a problem.

In regards to mixing peroxide with water, I think you are supposed to use "normal" OTC peroxide, which I think is 3% (?).  However, you *can* get other strengths -- I have no idea where or how, but I do know we use 30% at work and it is VERY, very caustic and will burn immediately if it touches your skin.  So perhaps where ever you read about mixing with water, maybe they had a stronger peroxide?

Use whatever is "normal" at the drug store, and that should be fine!
