Sticky Situation, but super Proud Moment

Well, I was wondering when this day would first happen, and today it has. We were off on our morning walk, and about 100 feet in front of us I saw them. Two off-leash Golden Retrievers, bounding in our direction. I glanced around and noticed immediately that they did not *belong* to anybody there. Gaci and Shimmer noticed them but didn't pay much attention since they were so far away. We crossed the street and started walking in a perpendicular direction. Being the only other people with dogs out and about, they started to follow us. I kept walking, not speeding up. I got around the edge of a building and in our jolly routine I said *quick!* and off we went at a jog, just to gain a little distance. Then we stopped and started walking again. The dogs popped out about two houses down from us, and kept approaching. My girls started noticing by now that they were following, and began to get a little anxious - nothing dramatic, but tense. I saw a large pile of bags of leaves and decided that would make a decent barrier, as I knew this was not going to end right away. The Goldens approached quickly, one looked quite happy to see the dogs, the other was a bit tense, which I didn't really like the look of. I asked the girls to get behind me, with these two large dogs only four or so feet away. And they did. So they were sitting behind me, and the Goldens were standing in front of me, looking around me at the dogs. Shimmer let out one yip, and I turned and looked at her, and she didn't make another noise. I stood up tall and looked at the Goldens and said *Get outta here* in a stern voice, and stepped toward them one step. They took the message pretty clear and bounded off on their own.

However, I was uneasy that these dogs were running loose, as they were very nice looking, well cared for dogs, with tags, so I decided to try to find who they belonged to. I found a tree that was a good distance from the other dogs, and tethered my girls there. I walked away, called the Goldens to me, and they came running. I caught both of them and a nearby girl who also saw them came over. She held one and I held one while we looked for tags, and called the number on the tag. No answer. So much for having contacts on tags *G*. My girls were beginning to get upset at being tethered and left there, and I didn't have an extra leash, nor did I have any way to get them to safety, not with my girls with me. Thankfully not too long after a woman drove up in a car and asked about dogs, and the situation was resolved.

But man, am I proud of my girls today. When the work I've been doing was finally put to the test, I'm proud to say they passed with flying colors. They got behind me when requested, stayed calm (behaviourally, I could see anxiety in their eyes and face) and quiet, and the situation was resolved peacefully. My girls got super big rewards and a great long run for that. Now we're back home and they are both pooped out together in a sunny spot on the floor. Hopefully we won't have to test it again too soon in the near future!

Same happened to me 2 weeks ago, while walking with my dog another one (some kind of mutt) came out of a backyard without a leash towards us and growling, his body language was saying it all, there was a car between him an us, i placed my dog behind me and i just waited for the dog to appear behind the car, my dog didnt move, he knew i was going to protect him, the other dog was growling and looking at mine like if there was anything else in the planet around, i took one step to the front and i said "hey!!", the dog stopped growling and walked behind the car again, once he showed his back i knew i was able to start walking again so we did, the dog stayed on the side walk watching us leave in front of his house

I would recommend always to have the unknown dogs on sight and never ever show your back at them, before you know it they could be 2 feet away from you giving you no time to get ready, also that gives you time to read the body language better and know a little bit more about their intentions

Yes, I always kept them in the line of sight, which is why we walked in a perpendicular direction rather than the opposite one, and it wasn't until I knew the dogs couldn't see that we jogged to gain some distance, and then began walking again before they could see us, so there wasn't a need to *chase* in their opinion. I wouldn't put myself in a position that I couldn't easily see them at any time, but at the same time kept an eye out for a decent barrier to separate us, at least partially.

Great training job and great human to dog relationship you have built, both of you.  There is no way you can ever set up this situation (or a coyote situation) to test or proof your training.  You can never re-create the emotions or possible adrenaline rush unless in the situation.  Now don't get cocky, continue to strengthen the obedience commands for future unexpected events.

Congrats, Kim. And well done, girls. They have learned that not everything must be reacted to and that listening to you is always a good thing. And, at the risk of sounding like CM, you showed calm in the face of the unknown, a "vibe" understood by all at hand, canines included. If there's nothing to be afraid of, then others are less likely to be afraid. I hope the other owners fix their yard problem. Even if the dogs never really get into it with other dogs, they could fair badly in a meeting with a car or truck.

LOL, no worries, and no cockiness on my part. Success to me is only a sign to work harder, not to slack off. Smile As better reactions and reliable behaviour only come with more time and effort. I'm just so pleased that they responded so well, it could have gone in many other directions.

Oh, I most certainly agree. Calm was the name of the game, and I tried my darndest to make sure it was so, and to really control my own behaviour. And don't worry, you don't sound like CM, you sound like most behaviourists/trainers when they say that very thing. Big Smile

One of the best things he can do is to get the owner to change their attitude from one of anxiousness to one of calm, regardless of the actual technique. And that has little to do with whether you collar correct or give a treat for good behavior. That has to do with the human changing their behavior. Just that alone, getting the human to change, is harder than reacclimating the dog. The dog always behaves as a dog. So, while I don't agree with many of his techniques or explanations, I do agree that it is the human who has to change and that dogs can read humans very well. In fact, they read humans better than other animals read humans. Often, they can read humans better than other humans read humans. I wonder how many times a dog changes, not because they got collar corrected but because the human behaved as if there was nothing to be concerned about and they followed suit, as it were.
