Should I give my Havachon shorter summer cut?

My havachan is 7 months old now and his hair is long and silky.  He loves it outside and is determined to dig in the muddy banks of our stock pond.  I've relaxed a bit finally and allow him to enjoy his play time outside, but it is an every day chore to comb the leaves and sitcks out of his hair.

Does anyone else have a Havanese or Havachon?  The groomer suggests his next cut be more than feet and sanitary.  I don't want that beautiful silky hair to go away!

Will Max be miserably hot if I don't get him cut?  Every Havanese site I go to show adult dogs with long hair.

    What is best for Max?

hoenstly, opinions on this really differ! some say the dogs are more comfy with shorter hair in the heat, others say the longer coat protects them in the heat. personally i clip mine short for the summer, also cause i prefer it. and they seem to do well with it. the only thing thats for sure is, you have to be careful, if you clip them short, that they dont get sunburnt. since you like your dogs coat, i'd suggest, just leave it, and see how your dog handles it...

Re: Should I give my Havachon shorter summer cut?

I vote no.  I have a very thick, long-coated border collie who will not be shaved or cut this summer.  I've read, heard and believe that the coat helps protect and insulate them and I believe it.  I've worked very hard and patiently to remove his thick winter undercoat with line combing and have noticed already that he does not pant and seem as bothered by the heat as my mixed breed who has a more shepherd like coat.  I've seen long coated dogs at the dog park who are shaved for the summer and they don't seem more comfortable.  They are panting heavily and resting more than some long-coated dogs who are left natural.  It could be the dogs' individual responses to the heat, but I don't believe shaving or cutting a natural coat short benefits the dog.  If it's more convenient to keep him clean, maybe a shorter cut on his legs and belly would be helpful, but I don't think it would make him more or less cool necessarily.

Thanks to both replies.  I decided to just get a little more on the belly and legs and that's all.  He got his cut yesterday and he's a pretty boy.

A Havanese is a very different creature than a Border CollieWink A Havanese (or a Bichon, or a mix of the two) *must* be trimmed. His hair will continue to grow and grow.  A Border Collie really just needs a good brush out. His undercoat protects him. The Havanese coat isn't nearly as protective.

If you have trouble maintaining him in the summer, a shorter cut is definitely something to consider. I clipped one of my favorite clients, the other day. She's a retired show Cocker Spaniel, in gorgeous coat. She keeps picking up sand spurs and they poke her skin. There's no way to avoid them, around here, so her parents decided it'd be best to clip her coat. She looks super cute, and she LOVES the new cut. She's feeling really boingy, nowWink

I'm torn on this issue.  I'd like to say that the hair insulates them but it's much easier for me to take care of my dogs' coats when I shave them.  Since it makes no real difference, I vote to shave them.

I was just thinking.  You wouldn't let your full-coated Havanese live outside in extremely cold weather.  Their coat provides very little insulation against the cold.  They would also become a big mess.Stick out tongue  For that matter, why would the long drop coats insulate against extremely HOT weather?

Border collies have a thick fuzzy undercoat.  If you shave this, you are removing that insulation.  If you don't let it grow out, and keep shaving it, only the thick fuzzy undercoat will grow.  It's not "ruined", it's just temporarily damaged.  If you clipper a Bichon of Havanese, the coat will grow back the same texture as before.  And it makes sense.  Border Collies were designed to live and work outdoors, while Havanese were bred to delight their owners INDOORS.  They don't "need" undercoat.

I do need to clarify that Bichons and Poodles and drop-coated breeds DO have some undercoat.  The amount varies from dog to dog, but it IS there.  If you clipper a Yorkie or dark Poodle down very short (like 1/4" or less) you will see a color change.  Again, it's more obvious on some dogs than others.  And both coat types "shed" to a certain extent, again based on each individual dog.  The undercoat tends to get caught in the guard hairs, and become a cause of matting.

And Jennie, both of these breeds are the same creature!  It's not like we're comparing wolves and mountain lions, for goodness sake.

Hey, that dang Husky might as well have been a mountain lion! Wink

The coats are TOTALLY different. The result of clipping the coat repeatedly is totally different. Grooming needs for the two breeds are totally different. That's all I was sayinWink It's like comparing show grooming to pet grooming.... different creature!

Re: Should I give my Havachon shorter summer cut?

I have a great example that we use when a client asks this  question and we simply say, On a nice warm sunny day throw a fur coat or a winter parka on and go for a stroll or brisk walk around the block and see how you feel when finished. I have a Golden and I keep him shorter in the summer (not shaved ) just shorter and it seems to make a difference energy wise/less panting etc...Dog

Re: Should I give my Havachon shorter summer cut?

well, i just wanted to say that the fur coat example isnt very accurate, since dogs and humans have completely different ways of dealing with heat in the first place. we cool through our skin. we sweat and when the sweat evaporates from our skin it cools. dogs dont do that. they cool through their mouth and paws.

dont get me wrong, i believe that at least some dogs do better with a clipped coat and i keep my own clipped in summer as well (also cause i'm lazy about brushing, lol), but i believe things are a little bit more complicated than lots of fur=hot...

Trim in a comfy cut, but don't shave. Leave a few inches. The hair can protect, but won't make him hot. We stay inside and cool. I do have Trudy a bit shorter, but still long in summer. The house is cool.

this example is wrong actually. its a good example of how a dog feels when they are one big matt, but not when the dog is just in full coat. no dog with undercoat should be shaved (unless for a medical reason) and doing so is only satisfying the owners need to feel like their dog is cool. it doesnt make sense to most people, b/c one would think that more hair=hotter dog, but this isnt the case. a dog with undercoat needs his coat, and even dogs that do not need their coat for the same purpose need something to keep the sun from burning them.

i want everyone to focus on one line from the above statement, "also cause i prefer it, and they seem to do well". people do this for themselves, and then dont see that their dogs actually arent doing well. most people who shave their dogs have absolutly no clue about how it actually effects their coat, and the sad thing is that they usually want to remain ignorant. learning something else would mean that they would actually have to brush their dog.

Re: Should I give my Havachon shorter summer cut?

i see, you've already formed an opinion on me. let me assure you, i tried both, leaving the coat long and clipping it short. the short coat works better for my dogs. anyhow, they dont spend long periods of time in the hot sun, either way. coat or no coat, that's not something, my dogs have to deal with.

i have already stated that i believe the long hair=dog is hot comment is actually not an accurate statement. but i DO believe that each dogs coat varies. and even between dogs with an undercoat there are HUGE differences in texture and therefore in how well the coat insulates against hot weather.

but, yes, i guess i am ignorant..

Re: Should I give my Havachon shorter summer cut?

There have been some very interesting posts since I asked my question!  I just posted some new pictures I took yesterday.  Max loves, loves, loves it outside.  And he loves, loves, loves water and mud.

Yesterday, my husband backwashed the pool and Max played in the water for hours.  He was mud from the tip of his head to his tail.  Plus picking up sand burs and sticks in his coat.

After bathing and brushing him, I told my husband that was cruel and unusual punishment for both dog and me!  I still don't quite have all the mats out and I know if I leave any at all, they just get bigger and deeper. Fortunately, since I've brushed Max from the time I got him, he thinks grooming is part of life.  It's our bonding time as long as I take it slow.

I'm taking him to the groomer Friday.  I beginning to wonder if cutting him shorter isn't the kinder thing to do?  I just love his silky hair, though!  You would think he's got down feathers instead of dog hair.
