    New puppy training

Well soon to be new puppy that is. I will be getting a pup in about 6 weeks, which will make him/her 8 weeks. It is going to be the ever so rare pit mixStick out tongue. My cousin had an oops litter but for some reason this is the only way I'm going to get another dog.

So anyways a concern I have is that my yard is large. It is a chain link fence and the yard is a front yard not back. The fence goes right up to the sidewalk where people and dogs will pass. My current dog Bandit is not a barker.. She knows the difference between people passing the yard and people coming in. I "babysit" a younger dog at times, he's maybe just over a year( Natas)....has absolutely no training, a real wild child. When he sees another dog passing by he, along with my dog, will go running to meet the dog. My dog is friendly with about 98% of the dogs that pass. But I have yet to meet a dog that Natas is okay with. He will bark, hackles up, lung at the gate and will not shut up even if the dog is half way down the block. Usually if my dog encounters a dog she doesn't like she will bark at them but as soon as they are past the yard she could care less. I hate to have my dogs bark. Mainly because I want to be a good neighbor and noises tend to echo in my yard since houses are right next to it. I want to prevent this from ever happening with my new pup...especially since s/he will be a pit mix...wouldn't look too good. So is it possible to teach a dog not to go beyond a certain point in the yard or do you think she will be okay since my dog is well behaved (for the most part) in the yard? The other dog only visit once or twice a month at max 2days. I have tried training him. But he isn't here long enough to learn and his owners have their own mind. I did have success with his jumping on me. He now knows not to jump on me ever! I taught him to come to me and instead of jumping to sit. He has way too much energy. The last time he was here he went for a 6 mile run, then came home to play fetch for another hour. And yet was still not tiredHmm

I have never had a puppy before...Always wanted one. I started to get things together for my new pup even before they were born. So I know I will be here asking a lot of Q's and I plan to have it spayed( prob. will be girl I thinkWink ) early. I am also looking for training classes but so far have found everything is in the evenings and I start work at 2pm. So I am still searching. My current dog bandit is very mellow. I have never taken her to formal training but she knows how to behave. We used to travel a lot and go to a lot of public things so she knows how to behave. I only hope some of her will rub off on the new puppy. Oh the pups will be turning 8wks on June 6th and my b-day isn't until June 7 so it will tech. be my b-day present.Cake

    Re: New puppy training

Generally, the pup will follow the resident dog. To prevent barking, I would not leave the pup alone outside. I would keep looking for training classes - esp. being a pit mix. You should look into getting his CGC as soon as possible.

Puppies are a lot of fun - but be prepared for a TON of energy, chewing, playing, rough housing and eating. Pups need to be watched at all times - I crate all my puppies - and keep them with me when they are out so they cannot get into anything they shouldn't.

First, congrats on the puppy, and welcome to another Chicago-an!

Like Erica said, most puppies really follow the lead of the older dog.  Since Bandit doesn't bark much, I'd bet that her example will rub off on your new pup.  So I might wait and see what happens when she interacts with Bandit in the yard.  Beyond that, you could teach the "Quiet" command, so that you could use it appropriately when she's in the yard (if she is a barker).

Keep looking, hopefully you'll find one!  It's so incredibly vital for a puppy to be properly socialized, especially in the first few months.  Beyond the training aspect of puppy classes, the socialization your pup gets is completely worth it.  Also make sure to take your pup lots of places when you get her.  She won't be able to touch public ground without her completed shots, but you can carry your pup in your arms everywhere.  While we were waiting for Honor to complete her shots, I used to carry her EVERYWHERE...up and down the hallways, to the outdoor mall, to Petsmart, around the apartment complex, etc.  All of this is good socialization opportunities for your pup, and it's nice bonding time as well.

Please feel free to ask questions, there's a lot of knowledgeable people on the forums.

And by the way, Bandit reminds me a lot of my Honor, except much bigger! Very cute. Smile

    Re: New puppy training

Yeah...Il still keep looking for some training classes for her/him.  I always wanted a pit and have always known that when I did get one I would deffinatly be going to classes to train it.  I even bought a dog crate before they were even born...granted if they weren't I still would have bought it b/c it was only $10 (second hand store)Stick out tongue  I always find the best stuff there. like a kong for 1.99(still in packaging) and one of thoses large Loofa dogs( the one in the photo) for only .98.  Don't worry I always disinfect with bleech and let them air dry.

My current dog goes with me everywhere.  I try to get her out as much as possible. so whenever there are parades arounds she is with me. I don't think socialization will be a problem with us...but I'm going to have to find little kids so s/he gets used to them.
