    Best Flea and Tick Medications/Remedies

Right now I'm using the Hartz formula but it's kind of a pain because then all of the pets have these gross grease spots on their backs.  By the time it wears off, I have to re-apply!

I won't touch Hartz products, EVER. They are far, far too dangerous, IMO. I alternate monthly between Advantage and Frontline Plus. Gotta keep them bugs on their feet :) If I know we are headed someplace with fleas (like, uh, my backyard?) I have a mist of Avon's Skin So Soft/plain 'ol alcohol and water in a spray bottle that I'll spray on his legs/belly as a temporary thing.

Vacuuming daily has helped, as well as keeping BF on his toes with spraying the yard.

I use Frontline Plus, Advantage (alternating months).  I'm trying something new, for me, this year.  About 2 months ago I started da boyz on garlic & brewers yeast on their food.  I'm hoping it will help.

No matter what happens, somebody will find a way to take it too seriously.

I'm looking into putting my dogs on Bio Spot.

All my guys are on Advantage. I may switch to Vectra, if Advantage starts to slack... but so far, so good! I had though about adding garlic to Casey's food... but..... his breath already stinks, I would rather NOT make it worse!!!

Agreed.  Nothing made by Hartz or Sargeant's will ever touch one of my pets.

I use Frontline Plus for fleas/ticks.

Bio Spot and Revolution both are systemic.  That means that pesticide goes into the blood stream and stays there.  Fleas, etc. don't die UNTIL they bite the dog!  That seems rather pointless to me.  Aside from the fact I don't like thinking the dog's blood is *that* toxic?  That just doesn't seem sensible no matter the mechanism for killing the parasite.

bioSpot has a huge amount of side effects -- you might check http://www.dogsadversereactions.com -- it's also only supposed to last 2 weeks which makes it far less cost-effective than other things.

I like Frontline Spray -- I can dose it as I want, and it seems more effective than so many others yet lasts a month or longer.

Callie - Do fleas still bite with Frontline Plus or is it supposed to also be a repellant? While I never see fleas on my girls, nor does the groomer, they still itch and I'm thinking about switching from Frontline Plus to Advantix, but I'm terrified of possible bad reactions. I do think the grass here contributes to the itch. Does the diluted Skin So Soft leave a greasy residue on the fur?

if you dilute it - it should not leave a residue - IME.

I use advantage - never had a problem. I have cats the groom my dog - so I'm trying to stay away from products that are toxic to cats. I use the same tube of adv. for my dog and cats.
