  Why is my *full name* and not my user name showing up in friend lists? Reply Contact I do not like this!!  I was just fixing a bunch of profile stuff, and ended up looking at a user's friend list that had me in it.  Why was my full name showing up above my avatar instead of my user name?!?  I take my privacy seriously, and while my last name is a common one (*sigh of relief*) and it would be hard to track me down...there are ways.  I don't want people knowing exactly who I am unless I specifically tell them. Any ideas on how I can fix this myself?  Or is this part of the system?  I tried to see where I could fix it, but nothing's coming up.   Jessica

Reply Contact Ok, well I fixed it, I guess.  At one point this forum had an option to block your name from going out even though it was required for membership application. Apparently when the forum switched over it kept my name in the user profile but lost the 'hide name' protection. *sigh of relief and frustration*   Jessica

When you do a google search for your name - this site pops up. even if you take your last name off your profile... I do not like that one bit...... any tips on how to make that go away? My last name has been removed from my profie - but it stills shows up in google.

Reply Contact *gasp*  That Google search linked directly to my profile!!!  Granted, I had to do a pretty specific search because I really do have a common name, but...!!!!  Who do we talk to to get this CHANGED?  Like I said above, I take my privacy very seriously, and I am gone from this forum unless we can figure out how to de-link this information.  (Please don't take that as a threat, anyone.  I just mean that as a gauge of how concerned I am about this.)  Jessica

Reply Contact Yep - it's the FIRST link that comes up when you search my name.... granted - I say nothing on here that I wouldn't say to anyone else in person, but sometimes you just want a place where people can't 'find' you and you don't have to be worried about offending someone with something you say.....

Reply Contact I just contacted the 'powers that be' with this:   It recently came to my attention that a google search done with members' names will bring up a link to the forum--not just a link, but a direct link to that individual member's profile.  For me, this creates an issue of privacy--is there any way of hiding our names?  I also feel that there should be an option on the profile page that allows us to hide our names--I put my name in the 'name' field not knowing that it would show up above my picture in friends lists (does it show up anywhere else?).  I changed my name in my profile, but I am concerned. What can you do? Jessica

Reply Contact There's a thread about this down in one of the site forums.  Kate told me the link to the profile only works for us b/c we are already logged in and there's no way to remove it.  So, there's nothing that can be done, but if a random person Googled you and clicked the iDog link, they can't see your profile unless they register and login (I think...I hope.....). Reply Contact Is there some particular reason that folks think that they have to put their full name in their profile?  Mine isn't.  My last name is not at all common, so my profile only has the first letter of my last name.

Create an account", but as far as I can tell the only difference is that you can see the person's age, location, and interests when logged in. Otherwise you can look at posts, blogs, photos and videos in a profile without being logged in. I don't know why they bother hiding the location since it shows up on every post anyway.

Reply Contact The reason the profiles still show up on Google is that Google caches information.  Profiles were made public for some reason when the software switched over and even though some privacy has been restored to them, there is nothing that can be done about what Google has already indexed.   I am no happier about this than any of you, but if you guys would like to tell me what information is currently publicly viewable on your profile that you would like hidden, I will ask that it be done if possible.    Kate - Dog.community Administrator Jokers to the right.

Reply Contact but the biggest problem for me is - my last name ISN'T in my profile - but when you search for my name, you get this site. So - in reality when you search for Erica and dog.com - you can get my last name...I don't like that. If I wanted people to know my last name, and who exactly I was - I would share it with everyone! But I don't!
