How do you store your dog food?

    Hey dog lovers . . .

I'm new to the site, but I knew that this was the place to go to get good opinions on dog food storage.  I'm on a team that is developing a new product concepts for dog food storage and we want your opinion.  So please take the time to fill out this quick 5 minute survey.  Thanks!

I'll answer your questions here, but I'll not do a survey. I store the  thirty pound bag of kibble in it's bag,, and then inside a human grade plastic food bin.  The bag only lasts seven or eight days, so long term storage isn't an issue for me.  Their home cooked goes in a large, human grade plastic container, in the fridge.

    Hey dog lovers!

Here is another dog food storage survey.  This one is about your preferences for dog food storage options and prices.  My team has narrowed down a concept that we are looking to bring to market but we still need your opinion.  It's a short 10 minute survey, so if you have time please take this survey.  Your opinion counts!  Thanks!

Re: How do you store your dog food?

I'll answer your survey right here. I store my dog food in the basement. Each dog eats something different so they each have their own storage bin. I use cheap storage bins and won't spend more than $10 on a container.

Re: How do you store your dog food?

I have one of those big storage containers on casters with a snap lid.  It holds a 33 lb. bag of dog food quite nicely and I keep it in the pantry so I really don't care much about being able to change the design. I think metal would be heavy and cumbersome for that much weight, and ceramic or glass would be just as bad except that there would also be a chance of it breaking. I also think a screw top lid would be a PITA.  I just lift the lid on one side and fold it back.  It cost about $25 and was well worth it.

Freezer. Either in the original bag or when it is time to cut up the portions into a plastic bin. Then the 'thawed' portions go into the meat bin in the refrigerator.

I store both the dog and cat food in their bags in a cupboard. Does using a plastic tub make it last longer or keep it more fresh?

I store 2- 40 lb bags of dry food outside in a metal trash container (always used for this purpose) next to it in another metal trash container is my wild bird food and sunflower seeds.  They all sit in a frame w/wheels so I  can move it if I need to.  I keep treats and snacks in the house in a food grade plastic container w/screw top lid and their fresh goes in the bin in the fridge.  I changed to the metal containers several years ago because the mice and the squirels could chew thru the heavy plastic containers I had outside.

Re: How do you store your dog food?

In the bag in a more or less airtight metal trash can.  I go through food so fast I don't worry too much about exposure to air.  I also use the metal because we used to live in a place where I had to store the food on the screened porch outside and raccoons could get to it.  Nine dogs and I had a raccoon problem, sheesh.  Not here though - the guard dogs have access to the house.  But I don't see any reason to change.

I've got one of those stack and store containers and love it!  The spinny lid is the bomb.  I store duck food in it.

The cat's food is only purchased 3 pounds at a time and is stored in a large plastic cereal container.

And of course all my homemade stuff is stored in plastic bags in the freezer.  I freeze the liquidy stuff in silicone muffin forms, then when they are solid, I pop them out and store them all together in gallon freezer bags.  then I can remove 6 oz at a time, about half what I use in a day.
