A friend in Portland, OR needs a canine behaviorist...

    Quote:

"I come home to find that she's torn the carpet to shreds—like destroyed several square feet, carpet pad included.  She pulled a vertical blind down from along the sliding door and destroyed it.  She got up on my desk, knocked around my computer and accessories, and knocked over a plant I love.  She levitated onto the kitchen counter and got paw prints all over up there.  She chewed out the rubber guard on the kitchen sink's garbage disposal.  She peed on a stack of bills I have on my floor waiting to be filed.  Those bills she didn't pee on she shredded.  She also shredded a paper grocery bag and spread it everywhere.  She peed on the carpet in the bedroom.  She chewed up my sheets."

    /end quote

She has recently been put on Tameril-P or something (that's the name he gave me) for her allergies--she's recently been having hair loss/irritation issues.  She's an 8 to 10 year old Corgi mix.  I suggested a canine behaviorist, but wanted to give him more help than that.  Does anyone know of any good specialists in the Portland, Oregon area that I can refer him to?

    Thanks, guys!

I'd visit a vet first.  Here are some potential side-effects of Temaril-P:

    • The following side effects have been reported: excessive thirst, excessive ingestion of food, excessive urination, dull, dry hair coat, weight gain, panting, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset, hypotension, muscle wasting, depression, lethargy, viciousness. If symptoms persist and appear troublesome, contact your veterinarian.
    • Your pet may be very tired, drowsy, have a dry mouth, and rarely, urinary retention. If these symptoms are troublesome, contact your veterinarian.
    • Drowsiness may diminish over time.
    • Elevated liver enzymes, weight loss, sodium retention and potassium loss, delayed wound healing, osteoporosis, possible increased sensitivity to bacterial infections, and blood dyscrasias (may affect the bone marrow).
    • Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.

Sorry, I don't know any behaviorists there.

Does the dog behave this way only when her owner is gone?

Did this behavior start after she started taking the Tameril?

It could be a side-effect of the drug or it could be separation anxiety. Or something else entirely.

Thanks, I'll definitely pass that on.  Do you know of another medication that would possibly help with her skin irritation?  I've told him to switch to a higher quality food, but another friend I know who breeds/shows Cardigan Corgis (she owns Jake if that means anything to anyone) and whom he trusts said not to bother with good quality food for Corgis because they were bred to be garbage dumps and can eat anything and do well on it.  Confused

Since she actually has dogs right now, and is really active in the dog world (and since we don't have a dog at the moment) he's listening to her.  He's got Chloe on some sort of Diamond brand--Costco?  I told him to switch to maybe Timberwolf Organics or Wellness CORE or Canidae (he can easily afford any premium food) but he's taking our other friend's word that Chloe doesn't need the higher quality food.  In my mind, Chloe's skin is word enough that she does.  But I'm still working on him for that.

She has always been slightly antsy about his leaving (she cannot be shut in a crate due to previous abuse) but it was only in the last week or two that she has been showing heightened symptoms of anxiety.  If I'm understanding him right, that does put the behavior right around the time she started the Temaril.
