    17 y.o. had several seizure

my 17 y.o. poodle had two seizures about a month and a half ago.  the vet said to watch him.  he had two more seizures this past weekend.  we brought him into the emergency room and he was treated by two vets who did not know him, although they did have all of his records. our vet is on vacation for the week. they kept him over night.  they said that they could not be sure that he didn't have a stroke, because he was not walking and his back legs were scissoring.  i told them that was normal for him and that he will walk on non-skid surfaces, i.e. grass, cement, rugs, etc.  they put him on prednisone to reduce swelling in his brain; they are assuming he has a brain tumor.  he has been taken off of deramaxx and has had his tramadol upped.  they also put him on zonisamide for the seizures.  he seems to be getting better; however, he seems to be getting more senile.  he walks around the house and yard aimlessly.  if he does slip on the tile floor, he cannot get himself up and will whine.  he is very hard-of-hearing and now i think his vision is failing him as well.  his appetite is still quite good.   i'm not sure what i am asking.  maybe, should i continue to see improvements?  is the prednisone a wise plan of action?  when do you know enough is enough?

Frankly you need a different type of vet.  The tramadol may be making him loopy.  I've had super good luck with traditional Chinese veterinary medicine -- it's MADE to order for seizures (acupucture deals with electrical current in the body and seizures ARE electrical in nature and the Chinese herbs can help TONS).

http://www.tcvm.com -- you might be very amazed at how much they could help.  There is a locator on the left (for US or Canada - the sentence link under the locator is for non-US lists)

Honestly it depends entirely on what the underlying etiology of the seizures is.  The person whose advice you follow should be your vet.  Something as serious as a brain tumor or recurrent seizures should not be something you manage by advice by someone on the internet without a vet degree.  Predinisone is the standard of care for decreasing cerebral edema and if they think that is the problem you SHOULD take it.  If you do not treat cerebral edema eventually blood flow to the brain will be decreased to the point of brain damage.  These are not things to mess around with and try herbs IMO.  There is no reason why you couldn't try another type of vet, but I would NEVER substitute their advice for that of a trained medical professional.  As for the question for when enough is enough, I think that is the hardest question of all and there is no right answer.  Sometimes you just get to a point where you know it's enough.  I wish there was some easy solution, sounds like your little guy is having a rough time.

The http://www.tcvm.com link I posted would ALL be veterinarians who are not only 'regular' vets but who also have additionally trained in acupuncture, etc.  Particularly I thought it might be helpful because your vet is away.   Don't go to anyone for advice who isn't a vet.  But for seizures, acupuncture can be a huge help, whether it is triggered by a chemical imbalance, tumor or whatever.

And this probably doesn't need to be said, but don't just 'stop' prednisone - you can't.  It can cause some really severe rebounding type reactions if you try to just 'stop' it against what advice the vet has given who put the dog on it.

Re: 17 y.o. had several seizure

i got in touch with his pain management vet, who also is an acuouncturist.  we tried acupuncture a few weeks back, after his first set of seizures.  toffee was very sensitive and didn't tolerate the needles.  she even used the small hand needles.  we were going to try a newer technique that involves lasers.  i think it has similar effects to acupuncture.  we'll have to wait on that for a while.   she suggested staying the course with the prednisone and decreasing the tramadol back to his regular dosage.  she said the increase could be making me too drowsy.  so that is where we are for the moment.  he seems to be a little more agile, getting himself in and out of his crate, getting himself up off the floor if he happens to slip and no whining.  i hope he is on the upswing for now.

thank you all for your suggestions.  if you can think of anything else that could help toffee feel better, just pass them along.

My friend's dog recently had the lazer therapy, and had GREAT results. I've talked to the vet about it, and we're going to try it on my dog, next time.

I hope your little one  continues to do better.

laser acupuncture can be great as well -- but gosh I wish you could see a vet who is a certified herbalist as well -- the herbs can help SO much.  The Chinese really have a whole different take on this stuff and gosh it works so well.
